After following these performers for years on youtube, we went to hear them perform the Christmas Oratorio in Utrecht and Haarlem. It was wonderful to hear them in person.
0:07 Unser Mund sei voll Lachens (Chor) 6:44 Ihr Gedanken und ihr Sinnen (Arie) 11:18 Dir, Herr, ist niemand gleich (Rezitativ) 11:52 Ach Herr, was ist ein Menschenkind (Arie) 16:19 Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe (Arie) 19:57 Wacht auf, ihr Adern (Arie) 23:45 Alleluja! Alleluja! (Choral)
@@matteomagurno3068 It was available on the NBS All of Bach website for the past couple of years. Now this absolute gem is reaching the wider audience it so richly deserves.
"Ehre sei Gott" was also used by Bach for the "Virga Jesse floruit" interpolation in the E-flat Magnificat, but arranged for *two sopranos [*edit: actually soprano and bass], rather than soprano and tenor.
The music is so beautiful. This music makes my day happy. I want to go to the Netherlands because of your music, and I really want to go there and listen to music in the field. Thank you for your music.
What delightfully happy onomatopoeia in opening chorus: “May our mouths be full of laughter and our tongues full of praise. For the Lord has done great things for us.” Such treasure!
16:20 Onwards: what a sublime pairing of those two voices. His mature voice (I suspect a risky choice to the modern ear) lends a woodsy, silky timbre to the melody that seems perfect for her brightness. Honoring the piece beautifully.
Thanks for yet another outstanding All of Bach production, perfectly convincing in both musical and technical quality. Dear All of Bach team, may I ask you to forward a technical detail question to your sound engineering colleagues: I can very often see these little vertical microphones, e. g. in the strings section at 0:28. What type of microphone is this? Seems to work well soundwise even in this low position, without obstructing the video too much. Thanks very much in advance!
Bravo. Tears of joy for Lucie Chartin in the choir. I'd seen her first in Netherlands Bach Society's _modern_ setting of BWV.211 _aka_ coffee cantata. Search for her name, if you please, to find *a)* a sweet rendition of an aria from Matthäuspassion, with panpipe+accordion accompaniment, *b)* Ophelia's demise from Ambroise Thomas' 1868 opera, "Hamlet", where Miss Chartin is simply mind-blowing. ---Waving from Istanbul.
It is always unfortunate that we cannot hear what JSB, and his audiences could, long ago. However, it seems to me that this group would compete favorably in any time and location. I tend to think that Bach in his Music Heaven is smiling, just like me.
Grandi... immensi, universali ! ---
Yes! Bach reused the music from his Orchestral Suite no. 4 in D major, BWV 1069, but added another choir and four soloists to it, to greet the newborn Child in festive spirit. Read more about this cantata on www.bachvereniging.nl/en/bwv/bwv-110/
Orchestral suites in Church!!!. Oh boy, definitely the Church officials hated Bach for turning the music 🎶 upside down. They didn't know that Bach got that from above
Gag….countertenor again. What is UP with that?!? Women sound 100% better, and if the snobbish attitude of “original instruments and historic accuracy” is the excuse, then why is there a female soprano?? That argument won’t work as long as boy sopranos and altos aren’t utilized!
So who is conducting and leading the orchestra? Herr van Veldhoven or Sato San? I do find Sato's style of lead violinist very irritating. Sorry if it annoys others but it is my honest view.
What you can see is the first violonist leading the strings as it is mostly usual in every small orchestra, even when there's a conductor. (And if you have to: it's MENEER van Veldhoven, not HERR...) 😉
This was recorded December 17th 2015 at the Grote Kerk, Naarden. (Sato was appointed the 6th artistic director of the Netherlands Bach Society (Nederlandse Bachvereniging) beginning on 1 June 2018, succeeding Jos van Veldhoven).
