Guy, are you sure it is Wieland Kuijken on the Viola da gamba? I don’t recognise him. Could it be Jaap ter Linden? And who is the lady, playing the other gamba? Who is the bass player?
@@k_b7341 You are wright! The Viola da Gamba player is Jaap ter Linden, not Wieland Kuijken... Here is the complete distribution: Soprano: Mieke van der Sluis; Alto: René Jacobs; Tenor: Marius van Altena; Bass: Max van Egmond Recorders: Frans Brüggen, Walter van Hauwe; Violas da gamba: Jaap ter Linden, Adelheid Clatt Continuo: Violoncello: Anner Bylsma; Violone: Antonie Woodrow; Organ: Ton Koopman
@@richardmyron739 I don't agree with you. The Celloist is Anner Bylsma. Here is the comment of this video made by Walter Bitner: "There are many audio recordings and videos of Actus Tragicus available now, but this video made more than forty years ago was one of the first, is still one of the finest, and is of considerable historical significance. It is not exactly the same ensemble that made the audio recording included in Volume 26 of The Complete Cantatas recorded for Teldec, although many of the personnel are the same. Some of the influential musicians involved in this video recording include not only 0:22 director Gustav Leonhardt (1928-2012 - leading pioneer of the historical performance movement). Is that Jaap ter Linden with a beard playing gamba at 0:29? The recorders at 0:49 pair Frans Brüggen (1934-2014), the most influential recorder player in history; and Walter van Hauwe (b. 1948) whose three-volume masterpiece The Modern Recorder Player is the best method for the instrument ever written (I spent many hours with these books in the 1990s and early 2000s). Note also 2:02 Ton Koopman (b. 1944), portativ organ and Anner Bylsma (1934-2019), cello. Decades later, Koopman directed this performance of Actus Tragicus which includes a few of the same musicians. The soloists all give remarkable performances here, and how young they are! 5:18 Marius van Altena (b. 1938), tenor; 7:05 Max von Egmond (b. 1936), bass 12:08 René Jacobs (b. 1946), alto; and 9:22 Mieke van der Sluis, soprano. The choir is superb - warm and supple - and sing with clear yet soft diction through Leonhardt’s gentle tempi.
This is a superb audiovisual document from almost half of century! This is just gold testimony from some of the best musicians and singers from the late XXth century. Thanks for share this incredible, superb document!
A true document which really flatters. The great pioneers unite for an, for that time, non plus ultra performance. The record is nearly 45 years old but shows us where we were at that time. The great teachers unite to show us one more time what they learned from the sources.
This is the best! So pure, just the music, the text and the spirit of everything together. Incredible thanks to all the musicians, especially to Max van Egmond! R.I.P. Gustav Leonhardt
Sincere thanks for this precious document honouring the art of Gustav Leonhardt. I discovered baroque music when I was a boy, thanks to him and to the other artists we can see playing here. Since then, music strongly affected all my life, even if I am not a professional musician. I am proud to have got and grown one seed from the lots Leonhardt left us as an heritage.
Nice to see how much of Leonhardt's personality went into these ensemble performances. It's very skilled conducting, and I like the fact he's seated-much in keeping with the period. I note how beautifully the two recorder-players handle their exposed unison passages: very very hard to do unison duos like that.
I never get tired to listen to this rendition of my favourite cantata. It's so authentic, so musical and soulful. Let alone the skill of the musicians.... I absolutely adore Max van Egmond. Leonhard concucts from within the music, very moving.
Grazie
what an amazing document, thank you so much for posting this! the first generation of musicians that actually mastered the "historcal performance practise", had almost tears in my eyes listening to my teacher marius, seeing a yound max van egmont and healthy looking frans brueggen, jaap ter linden, ton koopman and had a little laugh at gustav leonhardts "conducting", may he rest in piece, he can be so proud of his input into realizing this music, we've learned so much! thank you, Gutti!
Another valuable historic video! Fortunately Leonhardt has also recorded BWV106 for the Teldec series. Leonhardt's conducting here is like playing a huge tracker organ - i.e., with immediate action ... and it works wonders! Besides many other things he did, Leonhardt invented a marvellously effective way of directing this type of music. May this wonderful musician rest in peace ... in aeternum.

Am I wrong or was that a younger Ton Koopman playing the continuo??? Excellent performance by the Master, Leonhardt, of the Master's(Bach) music. Thank you very much for this!!!
@gesualdolistener Not to take anything away from the extraordinary achievements of the late Gustav Leonhardt, but important to note that some 30 years earlier Isolde Ahlgrimm was leading historically informed performances - some of which a much younger Leonhardt attended and was most surely influenced by. Many thanks to @rodevries for posting this wonderful video!
Actually, I believe they are copies of Bizey at A392 made by the late Fred Morgan. All extant Stanesby Sr altos are around A405 give or take and Stanesby Jr A408-410 or so.
“Questa è l'antica Legge: uomo, tu devi morire!” “Ja, komm, Herr Jesu, komm!” “Sì, vieni, Signore Gesù, vieni!” “In deine Hände befehl ich meinen Geist; du hast mich erlöset, Herr, du getreuer Gott”. “Nelle tue mani affido il mio spirito; Tu mi hai liberato, Signore, Dio fedele”. “Oggi tu sarai con me in Paradiso”.
+Blightyish, I 'm glad we have a real expert here. BTW, Koopman never took over. If you don't like his style, listen to Herreweghe or any other baroque performer. You may listen to recordings by Richter or even Mengelberg for all I care.
+wkruit Yes, I agree, I would at any time much rather listen to Herreweghe or Leonhardt or, especially the incomparable Karl Richter. As an organ soloist Koopman is just ridiculous. As a harpsichord player he is tolerable.By the way, this Actus Tragicus is by far the most moving I have ever come across in my life. It's a glimpse into Heaven.
This was a few years before the 1980 LP -- it's a live version filmed Jun 18-20, 1977 at Canisiuskerk, Nijmegen, the Netherlands, during the Holland Festival. This was evidently Leonhardt's first recording of this cantata. He recorded it again in 1979 or early 1980 for the cantata series.
