Amazing to think that this piece was originally written for violin. Just shows how the power of Bach’s music transcends the instrument it is played on.

This must be the ultimate proof not just of the universality of Bach but also (without any disrespect at all of this performer) his utter indestructability! The piece was written for unaccompanied solo violin, yet (like the great Toccata and Fugue in D minor, which may also have originally been a violin piece) it can be played on just about any instrument - or combination of instruments - that you care to name.

Magnificent in every way. Whilst written for a violin, and fiendishly difficult to master on that instrument (I’ve been trying for decades), this transcription displays the full majesty of the composition. What an organ and thank you so much. You moved me to tears remembering my mum who passed away in May. She loved her local church and part funded a new electronic organ for it a few years back. The church is nearly a thousand years old and so every time I hear that organ play I remember her legacy in a very special place for our family. The cycle of our time passes so quickly but Bach transcends the centuries.

What an incredible organ! It's suits Bach more than I thought it would! Another fantastic post - thank you guys! I must admit I find the console layout of many European organs very hard to get my head around - three layers of pistons over each stop tab! @@ferasmy Ah. Thanks for responding! My reasoning was based upon not seeing any of the stop tabs in the "on" position, or changing throughout the performance. Likewise it appeared that none of the old-style setter tabs above each stop tab were in use. Does the modern combination action in the drawer not move the stop tabs? I really wish I could find more information on this organ, but there is nothing about it on the Klais website.
@ferasmy
@ferasmy Год назад
@@charleslayton9463 When the organ was renovated in 1991, a separatly set of register-pistons (with "only" 64 combinations) was included in a drawer to the right of the organ player (below the main stops). This is of course hopelessly outdated today. But Klais always did it that way in this time. The three free combinations (old-style setter tabs) are still in operation. Today, the consoles were modify (see Cologne Cathedral) with switchable buttons, which is also much more practical and visible.

Thank you for this performance, and for putting the full stoplist of the instrument in the description. I'm fascinated by this organ and its console. Little information appears to be available online. I hope you can tell us more about it (perhaps in a follow-up video)? The tonal finishing is really quite sublime, everything blends well and each additional stop is subtle enough to not be jarring but clear enough to be heard distinctly. The console is unusual (at least to my USA-centered eyes) - can you tell us how each of the three setter tabs (I presume they are part of the combination action) over each stop tab are utilized? There is also a LED display - was the combination action upgraded or replaced more recently, and do the setter tabs still operate? Thanks again for any info you can provide.

@bobrpdx Those rows are the old preset switches: when the organ was built, it was only possible to set registrations 3 changes ahead of the current registration, madman´s work compared to modern presetting systems ... Yet still better than the pneumatic presetting system created by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, e.g. for the organ of St. Sulpice in Paris, which was by the way a unique feature at that time in the 19th century, of course entirely analog yet a precursor to the digital solutions of today with its endless possibilities ...
