Why don't they play music like this when we're out eating in a restaurant or shopping? This music makes me feel calm, relaxed and alive. The music they play here in the US is loud, obnoxious, says nothing and makes me want to run out the door. So glad I found this to listen to today. Peace everyone.

Я помню,когда мне не было ещё и десяти лет,по телевидению транслировали классические концерты и Бах,только Бах,с его небесной музыкой,с его Вселенским органом,переворачивали мою детскую душу,я впадала в оцепенение,боялась дышать,чтобы не спугнуть это волшебство....Прошло больше сорока лет,а я всё так же,как та маленькая девочка,забываю дышать,когда слышу и слушаю Баха...

Mehr als vierzig Jahre sind vergangen, und ich vergesse immer noch, wie das kleine Mädchen zu atmen, wenn ich Bach höre und lausche...." Kommentar des Übersetzers: Nur sehr selten hab ich eine solche Liebeserklärung an JSB gelesen, nur ganz selten. Sie hat mein Herz berührt.

Bach's music is so wonderfully soothing, and so beautiful. Years ago, when going through a divorce I could not sleep. My sister brought me all her Bach CDs, and I played them at night. I still could not sleep,, but the music calmed and soothed me, and helped me through the nights! Good wishes from South Africa 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

@@julianwynne8705 With all due respect to your profoundly insightful observation, which so cleverly responds to what was obvioulsy a use of figure of speech; I suggest that had composers pre-those 800 years offered up memorable music it might have and may well have been thereafter preserved and written down; preserved in musical memory and performance, captured in the new musical notation. We have thousands of pages of highly prized literature and received learning going back to hundreds of years before it was 'written'. Just a thought.

@@100Equipoise And with corresponding respect for YOUR considered response (and 'just a thought' is very witty - Socrates or Hume might have concluded some history-breaking dialogue with just such a modest phrase!), I venture to comment (1) that 'might have and may well have been' outlines two different - and contradictory - historical lines: 'might have [been]' admits that it (that memorable music we haven't got) nevertheless, er, plainly wasn't; 'may well have been' omits to point out that EVEN if it WAS, it hasn't survived- and it's that we're talking about, isn't it? (2) the 'thousands of pages' may SUGGEST what they in some sense 'go back to', but what they go back to isn't, is it, THE SAME as what eventually got written down (and which we can read now: e.g. Genesis I.1 may be based on what God told Adam (who told Cain, whose descendants eventually told the perhaps 4th c BCE writers) about the order in which he had during that eventful week created the whole caboodle, but that Genesis wasn't WRITTEN during that week (since even Hebrew has a history, whereas that week was presumably the first week OF history...), was it?!

I have end stage Adrenal Failure. So i lay here in bed - at least i am in my own home. And wonder whether my Loving G-O-D will take me today or tonight or if some how I will come through. It’s such a sweet time listening to Bach. Although Brother Beethoven is my Favorite lol.

It is healing song. I would not call it relaxing music. This music makes you think,feel and live,no matter what. In any case Bach will be forever the best musican who could so deeply touch the soul of person of any nationality ,age or social status. Bach is hands down my favourite composer. He is my happy place. To wake up to or go to sleep to or if I need to take a few minutes during the day, Bach is it. I listen and for a while the world is a better place.

Last year in late April, my elderly Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with cancer had a seizure and sharply declined over the couse of the following two weeks. During that time, he spent a lot of time on my lap listening to this music. I know it was soothing for us both and helped me so much when it was time for him to pass over the Rainbow Bridge. Listening now, almost a year later, this music brings me right back to those precious last moments with my little friend, my heart. Rest in peace, Charlie (10-4-08 to 5-10-23). I hope I see you again someday. Thank you for this magnificent music and all of its power.

(1) tears IN HIS EYES - what a surprising place to find them... (2) onion would have the same effect if cut up close to him (or the recording of a close friend being tortured...) The upshot of this is that it's not the tears which indicate that it's significant music we're listening to; the interesting question then becomes: what IS it that indicates that?

I grew up hearing Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring often, in our Lutheran church in Canada. Typically, it seemed to be around Christmastime. I don't consider myself a Christian anymore, but there is something really magical about hearing this song. It's a feeling of comfort for me that is inexplicable and often makes me cry. Bach captured a feeling of absolute bliss, somehow.

My energetic 7 year old grandson was recently put on drugs so he would sit still in school. I wish his parents and the school would have tried Bach first. The expression "Music soothes the savage beast." came from Bach's era.

I have heard anecdotal evidence that playing Bach can calm down school pupils. It sounds like we both have deep reservations about the use of drugs to deal with short attention spans. I know that in my case, my attention deficit was not caused by any kind of disorder, but by early childhood trauma. Reading books, writing, listening to music like that of Bach, avoiding drugs and alcohol, and avoiding most social media has helped me a great deal.

the word bach translates from German to English as brook; small stream. My German teacher in Highschool said Bach was more like a large sea (mere) than a small brook. Of all the insanity in the world that has been and will continue, listening to this is wonderful and amazing. March on in happiness people life is a once in a lifetime experience!!!
