Sebastian's brilliant performance for prince Leopold wasn't appreciated by all. A nasty surprise awaits him in the middle of the night.

Thank you , Mr Peter Fielding ! This time I was online for the premiere , what a happy coincidence ! What better gift could this September afternoon give me ?! As you have already accustomed us to , we follow with all our heart what a winding path Bach ' s life hat , this time a Weimar . I consider it uplifting , obviously enhanced by music - the moment when young Sebastian was imprisoned .Only a very subtle and complex artist could have captured so finely the feelings of the young Bach .And then , in the oppressive silence of the prison , in the shadow - penumbra ,the arpeggios from the famous Prelude 1 BWV 846 began to rol . It's hard for me to believe that it could be played better than you did this moment ! Congratulations ! Much repect and reverence for enormous work done with so much passion for the realization of this wonderful project that makes our heart happy !!!

Dear Alexandru, this time, words are failing me for real. This is one of the most beautiful things anyone has ever said to me. Thank you... with all of my heart. Perhaps this particular prelude was written a bit later, though I've always imagined that its roots must have laid in this terrible month that Bach had to endure. Hardship always brings out the best (or worst) in someone, so why should it be any different here? Well... it's my personal imagination. :-)

Funny how Bach's accuser forgot that he, himself, asked Bach to play to the best of his ability, so, Bach was only doing what he was asked to do, and that got him arrested, and Bach's accuser made those accusations against Bach.

Musicians of the era were supposed to make their lords outshine the others, much like rich people nowadays like to show off with their Ferraris. But they were also supposed to remain loyal and certainly not accept a new work offer without first asking permission from their lord, like Bach did. Actually, Bach was lucky he escaped with only a month in prison because a couple of years earlier the same count had one of his violin players hanged for wanting to leave the court!

Peter: What a wonderful next episode! Plus, I like the “new” option with the singing. Much, actually! Best, Peter B.

I'd have hated having to kiss all of those aristocrats' asses as was the case at that time. Thank God for the likes of Beethoven who finally took the musician out of servants livery.

Yes, life wasn't easy for a composer in those days. Bach's son Wilhelm Friedemann already tried to make a living on his own, but he ended up in poverty. Mozart was probably the first to make some real money as a self-employed composer, but it didn't work out well for him either in the end. 😥

No, quite the contrary. Beethoven was a servant too, albeit a highest paid one. Just his employer let him to whatever he liked. In modern day, musicians are fully free from one lord, but have to become sort of lady Gaga to please the millions of patrons who only paid musicians in terms of tricks and records. And the worst music come with it.

@@weiliu7319 Very good points raised here! A slave to the mob can be worse than being a servant to a patron (or patrons) of good taste. I only meant that Beethoven never, to my knowledge, held an "official" position like, say, Antonio Salieri as Court Composer (-: (That is, unless one were to count his time as a violist in the court orchestra in Bonn prior to his move to Vienna).
