Bach was an Italian, and a Frenchman, and a German - musically speaking. In his ‘Italian’ concerto BWV 971, here performed by Christine Schornsheim for All of Bach, Bach follows the model from across the Alps, having three parts (fast-slow-fast), imitating the continual alternation between tutti sections and solos, and using ritornello (a sort of refrain to keep up speed) in the opening section.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on 15 February 2019 at the Bartolotti House, Amsterdam. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB and consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

In this so difficult moment for Italy... it's a really nice gesture to publish Bach's ITALIAN Concert right now on youtube. Bach's music is undoubtedly German, but the influence of Italian Baroque music, Vivaldi's in the first place, is very great. True art knows no boundaries and enemies, but only brothers.

To the armchair critics: Just relax. If she hesitated half a second on the B sharp in measure 78 during the Andante, the world will continue to spin. This remains an outstanding performance by a, no doubt, competent performer written by a genius. Now go back to your chores. They're mounting up

Bach sounds so much better on a harpsichord than on a piano. Bravo! Amazing performance.

At last I hear a human being in full control of a harpsichord! One that listens and reacts... What a joy.

Wow I'm stunned by this. I always thought I preferred it on piano. But the way this is played on the harpsichord in this performance is amazing! All the different shapes in the semi quaver passages are crystal clear, there's musical space between phrases (pianists seem to rely on the tone to help with that), and the use of the different manuals in the 3rd mov is fascinating and adds a lot of colour. I've learnt a lot just watching this. Thank you.

I REALLY LIKE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE AND THE SOUND OF THE HARPSICHORD. THE NATURAL WOOD EXTERIOR IS ALSO VERY ATTRACTIVE, NEVER HAVING SEEN THIS BEFORE. BRAVO.

This is an "Execution" par excellence! The musical phrasing, feeling, in Christine's hands is like the finest violin bowing! Beautiful..... a most eloquent musical peroration worthy of the eternal supremacy of Bach.......... Merci Christine!!!!!!!!!!!

The use of an almost-buff-stop-like timbre for the walking eighths in the Andante is brilliant. The harpsichord becomes a string ensemble of pizzicato support for a superb soloist. Schornsheim should have much wider international acclaim.

All of Bach keeps one sane in trying times. An upside to the technological advancement of our race, making the downside, a globalized world with a global pandemic, that much more bearable.

Superb performance! The 2nd movement arioso is especially fluid and graceful due to Ms Schornsheim’s exceptionally sensitive articulation.

I was going to leave a long, heartfelt comment praising Schornsheim's uplifting interpretation of this timeless piece, but I think the subtle smile of the audience members at

Lovely execution! Her hands look so relaxed, the fingers seem to touch the keys only when they're meant to, such control in her playing! The second movement was soothing to my anxious soul in these difficult times for Italy. Thank you very much, Christine Schornsheim, for giving us your beautiful interpretation!
