The cantata “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland” (BWV 62) was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) for the 1st Sunday of Advent in 1724. Its text is based on the Advent hymn of the same name by Martin Luther (1483 - 1546), which in turn goes back to the early church Latin hymn “Veni redemptor gentium”. Of Luther’s eight-verse “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland,” stanzas 1 and 8 are used as brackets in the Bach cantata, so that the opening chorale corresponds in wording to Luther’s stanza 1, and the closing chorale to stanza 8. The intervening two arias and recitatives can only be referred to Luther’s hymn text in very general terms. The author of this baroque poem is unknown. Because of Bach’s reference back to an original church chorale, BWV 62 is also referred to as a chorale cantata.
The internationally renowned conductor and Bach expert Philippe Herreweghe founded the Collegium Vocale Gent in 1970 and together they performed early music as a kind of historical performance practice. In 1989, the orchestra of the Collegium Vocale Gent joined the choir, which is made up of first-class international performers of baroque music. With the Collegium Vocale Gent choir and orchestra, Herreweghe has since produced landmark early music recordings, including the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach.
(00:00) Introduction
(00:22) Chorale: Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland,
Der Jungfrauen Kind erkannt,
Des sich wundert alle Welt,
Gott solch Geburt ihm bestellt.
(05:30) Aria: Bewundert, o Menschen, dies große Geheimnis:
Der höchste Beherrscher erscheinet der Welt.
Hier werden die Schätze des Himmels entdecket,
Hier wird uns ein göttliches Manna bestellt,
O Wunder! Die Keuschheit wird gar nicht beflecket.
(10:17) Recitativo: So geht aus Gottes Herrlichkeit und Thron
Sein eingeborner Sohn.
Der Held aus Juda bricht herein,
Den Weg mit Freudigkeit zu laufen
Und uns Gefallne zu erkaufen.
O heller Glanz, o wunderbarer Segensschein!
(11:04) Aria: Streite, siege, starker Held!
Sei vor uns im Fleische kräftig!
Sei geschäftig,
Das Vermögen in uns Schwachen
Stark zu machen!
(14:35) Recitativo: Wir ehren diese Herrlichkeit
Und nahen nun zu deiner Krippen
Und preisen mit erfreuten Lippen,
Was du uns zubereit’;
Die Dunkelheit verstört uns nicht
Und sahen dein unendlich Licht.

Lob sei Gott sein’m eingen Sohn,
Lob sei Gott dem Heilgen Geist
Immer und in Ewigkeit!
