Thank you so much! Good question - I prefer to play legato rather than picking every note, and though I think it’d be impossible for me to copy the exact articulation as written for violin, legato picking gets it a bit closer to that sound 😃

I would basically agree that playing it with the pick might be harder. But the reason is maybe more, that the piece is written for strings tuned in 5th, so the string changes should be more natural on them than on the guitar...

​@@johannschiel6734True, but i'm thinking at Ben's level, the challenge is not perhaps the less intuitive fingerings and more the right hand. I only know Bach's Cello Suite No.1 (a comparatively easier piece) but I find this rings true for me.

@@Locrian1 Yep, sure, right hand is the bigger issue in this kind of experiment.

All guitarists that I like that can achieve this even flow with good time use some legato/slides. Like Ben here, Tom Quayle, Tim Miller, Metheny, Martino... Alternate pickers that pick every note break things down in cascades. But if you have some YEARS of time and manic perseverance, check out Benson picking - the pick is held just like violin bow with similar wrist motion. It has bottleneck of changing strings upwards, just like gypsy picking. What I'm working on then is inverted Benson picking (upward slant instead of downward) combined with hybrid picking (check Marshal Harrison). You also want to learn to hammer on every note of left hand like Holdsworth (flamenco guitarists know this, if you can't play passage just with left hand, you can't play it with both hands in synch, you have to be honest with youself here:) Does this all work? I swear it does, you can achieve that pianistic flow while picking every note. Is it easy/quick to change your way of playing? Hell no!
