Start walking now! From Peterborough to Montreal. 400km. That’s the distance Bach walked at the age of 20, from Arnstadt to Lubeck, to meet the most famous German organist of the time, Dietrich Buxtehude. His church gave him four weeks off to make the trip, but it was nearly four months before Bach returned. Lubeck was hugely important in shaping Bach’s musical future. This Passacaglia, written soon after his return, was based on Buxtehude’s Passacaglia in D minor. Composer Robert Schumann described the variations of the Passacaglia as "intertwined so ingeniously that one can never cease to be amazed."
