The great "St. Anne” prelude and fugue. Apparently some musicologists think perhaps Bach may have been referring to the Holy Trinity during its composition. The prelude is in the key of E-flat major (three flats) with the triple fugue representing the three personages of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Who knows.
I've never heard anything equally majestic. It brought me to tears immediately, and it was almost as if the entire history of humankind with all of its beauty and accomplishments had flashed in front of my eyes.
I've been waiting for this recording since I saw the teaser. Leo is my absolute favorite player. I heard him play the fugue live in the exact same Church maybe a year or so ago. I was so thrilled to hear him live. It was one of my favorite concerts ever. Thank you NBS, thank you for your never ending work.
Okay, wow. Thankyou so much, dear Netherlands Bach Society. I've been waiting for this piece since I heard of your project. Now it is released, this genius piece of music. And I could listen to it all day. Thanks Keep going
How can one man be so full of such greatness? The amount of incomparable music he created is staggering. This piece is so grand and profound moving from grandiosity to solemn whispers. I am in awe. Thank you for another brilliant performance. AOB has me bewitched!
@@gregmeissner9960 I'd argue that the one really channelling Bach (and many others) these days is Sietze de Vries. It's one thing to be able to reproduce Bach's compositions, but it's quite another to be able to improvise in Bach's style (as well as those of other composers of that and other eras) so convincingly that you'd never know they weren't the real deal...
@@gregmeissner9960 not really. I just took you at your word. A mere interpreter does not channel the spirit of the creator. That's what van Doeselaar is - a very good interpreter, but not a creator - whereas de Vries is a creator who truly embodies the spirit of past creators, Bach included.
Bach wrote A LOT of "most beautiful music". For me: I celebrate the man's whole catalogue. I have all three "Gesamtwerk"-collection of records that are available. Bach never wrote anything weak, sure there are personal favourites, but what makes Bach the greatest composer of all time, among other things, is that he did not wreak any of his havoc. Every Cantata is beautiful and of sound technical quality. Some moments in Bach are better than other sure, but we have to consider his complete works in order to do justice to his credentials.
@@user_user1337 Can’t agree more. His solo instrument suites, sonatas and partitas also have some of the most beautiful moments in the history of western music. Indeed you can find everything in Bach.
@@user_user1337 _" Bach never wrote anything weak"_ Glenn Gould emphatically disagreed explicitly, and so do I. But one has to consider that he had to produce music industrially. I would concur that he never wrote anything weak when his heart was fully in it.
when I hear Bach it's all one being that vibrates, how much hours in this paradise of organists, the end of masses, the concerts only memories ... I never get tired by Bach ... it was a monument of artistic construction in constructive creation, let's say ... I have no words to describe what you feel in front of the organ:Do we serve it where it serves us? Everything is there, these tributes to God

As always, Mr. van Doeselaar played this wonderfully. This is one of my favorites of Bach and I love the slightly more stately tempo in the Prelude that he uses. It allows you to feel the almost martial nature of it. Bravo NBS!
If you'd like an even more 'stately' tempo, listen to Daniel Chorzempa. Some may find his interpretation agonizingly slow, but for me it enters a timeless celestial paradigm.
Does anyone ever dread when NBS releases your favorite Bach piece? I say dread because you know the video itself will be the best quality recording and cinematography of the piece that exists, but you are conflicted with how their interpretation will fare against your favorite recording? That was this piece for me. Thank goodness I had nothing to fear. Thankfully the organ is pitched a whole step higher than played to make it entirely different. But of course NBS comes through with another wonderfully done video! Bravo y'all!
The greatest organ work of all time, followed by the great Prelude and Fugue Piece d'orgue D-Major BWV532, the Toccata F-Major BWV540 and the Passacaglia C-Minor BWV582!!! Bach's most holy keyboard piece is a triumph of music and one of the greatest human achievements to say the least
Have you tried his incarnatus est, and his et crucifixus, from the b minor mass? Also the opening of the St John passion, and I think it's the ending of the St Matthew passion, as well as Erbarma dich mein gott Agnus dei from b minor Mass grew on me
I see a number of comments on the Tempo. For those who don’t understand how organs worked in Bach’s day, this is a tracker action instrument. All the opening of the valves comes from the force of the performer’s fingers. It is a completely different animal from a modern or re-engineered organ where the valves open electrically. The technique switch is almost as tough as going from piano to organ. Most organists can’t make it (I was one).
Beautiful dynamic performance by Leo. The clarity of the soundtrack is appreciated. The recording captures the tonal quality of the historic Silbermann organ. Interesting to learn a fast tempo performance is possible on the instrument. Thank you for sharing the performance.
Although it was Silbermanns very first complete work, I do think that this is still the greatest of all his organs and it is perfect for interpreting one of the absolute masterworks for this instrument
Quite magnificent - I have played the first part of the fugue myself and the subject entries and resolution of dissonances are sublime. While the last part - what can one say? Transported....and sending love and inspiration to all those who listen to this, a real blessing in sound
The final third part of the fugue, especially the climactic 16:01 is just... beyond words. Five voices, perfectly interwoven, all complementing and raising each other up to this euphorically triumphant conclusion. Very powerful stuff, even for Bach.
Deo gratias🙏💞💟🌷
As I've continued to listen to music throughout the years, one thing has become more and more glaringly obvious; no-one has ever, nor will ever, be able to surpass Bach.
i have loved this work lifelong. Thank you for this rendition. And I so recall my youth - playing it - 50 years back...... dancy, dancy, in the final fugue too. Stunning...
This music sends me to a higher consciousness. Its energy so strong; I have to allow it to flow through me so i don't become anxious. Bach must have been inspired by God.
…every tune its value, every bar breathing the cosmic power far beyond our known reality. It has been one of my favorites since childhood when our father presented the great JSB to us on many occasions. My soul still rejoices! Mi piace moltissimo
I heard this piece the first time in St. Catherine's Church, Frankfurt. To me this was a key step in realizing how great this man really was. People left the church with big smiles on their faces and a guy in front of me was quietly whistling the last fugue theme.
I love that fugue, especially when the last voice comes in on the pedal notes - big cherry on the sundae. His tempo is really nice, makes separating out the voices a little bit easier, which is most appreciated.
Bach’s most symphonic prelude and fugue? Utter masterpiece, and this is a great performance, and well filmed too. Thank you NBS once again. Hugely enjoyed. The companion piece on this Silberman organ is not to be missed either.
Bach está tocando y María Magdalena le pasa las páginas de la partitura. Impresionante interpretación y te pone la piel de gallina. Es la música dedicada al creador. Los tubos van directos a Dios.
Bravo. Beautifully played. 👍👏 It was always fun when I got to bring on the 32' Kontraposaune at the last pedal entrance. 💥 I think if an organist was only allowed to learn *one piece* of Bach's organ music, it would be this wonderful Prelude and Fugue.
Great van Doeselaar. . -This is for me the nearly authentic BWV 552 by J.S.Bach. - Respectful, defensive, calm, cautious , modest interpretation on a J.S.Bach contemporary Silbermann organ in Bach`s homeland..
The other observation I would make is on the pedal technique. I leaned the organ in England and was taught heel and toe pedal, enchiladas is certainly helpful when trying to do legato or chords. When I moved to Dijon I was taught by one Mlle. Chaisemartin, who was a pupil of Marie-Claire Alain, one of the finest of her generation. Mlle. Chaisemartin thought that my English heel and toe technique was so hilarious that she would have other students and the Conservatoire come in to view it as an example of what not to do. I still wonder what the Mighty Johann himself would have said…

And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. Revelation 12:10 This music fits so absolutely perfectly to your comment! May the Lord Jesus Christ be praised! God bless you and your family
