Bach was the absolute master of the fugue. No one could get the better of him in that style. He was the best in his field, you can`t ask for much more than that...

Omg this Well Tempered Clavier is like a huge room with innumerable velvet cases, each one containing a different type of jewellery..you can't get enough of it...

The bass voice in the fugue is absolutely beautiful. That's all I listen for.

Bach used E flat major for "those subjects with which he felt most deeply, and most keenly" -Glenn Gould. Definitely true, listen to anything written in E flat major by Bach, and you'll find that those pieces are coated with a sense of longing.

For example the Organ Prelude and Fugue BWV 552. One of the most glorious pieces ever written. Especially the fugue, which has three subjects. I also can recommend the orchestrated version of Schönberg.

Hi Paul , this is very inspiring since I am a fan of Bach, I actually learning the Fugue in my piano and play most of the prelude . the most difficult in the fugue part is to bring up the voices on the piano .Individuality moving one voice from one hand to another is beautiful but challenging. Thank you for this video

The playing in the fugue is better than Gould- one of the most spiritual moments I have ever had listening to music, simply sublime. The rich, deep left hand at the end was particularly special.

Amazing rendition of this Prelude and Fugue, and all the ones from Volume I you've recorded so far, Paul! It would be incredibly amazing if you would tackle the Art of Fugue some time. The world of Bach's music performances will remain incomplete until your version of that work is out there in the world!! :D

Thank you! -- know just what you mean. The P&F are published in such a way as the part writing can be seen clearly, but it's not easy at all on the eye when you need to see which hand plays what. I have a few editions of the P&F and the bars you mention at 1:20 range from very confusing to confusing :)

I couldn't understand the prelude. But the fugue was lovely, lively and bouncing. Much nicer than mine when I played this year's ago.

The prelude is actually a prelude, a fugato - chorale , then a double fugue!

I made an in-depth analysis of this fugue in my channel. I talked about the entrances, its main themes, and how the episodes were derived from the figures seen in the first materials.

Do you think it's better to change tempo throughout the prelude? It seems to obscure the synthesis of the first and second themes in favour of a sequence of independent sections. No complaints from me about the fugue, it was a joy to listen to!
@robbyburns5822
@robbyburns5822 6 лет назад
The thing about music is that you can play it anyway you like. It's not illegal to play what Bach did NOT intend. Music is art, and any art is up for interpretation. If he played it just how Bach would have wanted there would have been no surprises. And I love surprises in certain interpretations.

I think that strict adherence to tempo prevents a more emotional interpretation of this magnificent work. I treat the 32nd note passage in the prelude as a cadenza, slower with a rubato feel. This lets the passage sing. I play the whole thing rubato, thereby allowing this masterpiece to breathe. Throw away your metronome. You don't need it anymore. The metronome can stifle interpretation. On the other hand, I cannot boast your superior hand speed and precision. So maybe I am full of baloney. How many pianists does it take to screw in a light bulb? Ten. One to do it and nine others to stand around and profess that they can do it better. In the end, it is all a matter of opinion. How did Bach play this? We will never know, etc.
