The Toccata and Fugue in D minor is one of the most recognizable organ works ever composed. J. S. Bach wrote the work when he was in his teenage years, showcasing his amazing technique and understanding of compositional craft. Various arrangments and orchestrations helped the piece achieve a legendary status as one of the most well-known pieces in existence. This video shows you a full piano transcription of the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, containing all of the difficulties and exciting drama that is present in the original organ work. Enjoy!

@@leslieanne447 IMO it's the organ that lends this piece an eerie aura, which is why it was used in both the 1931 "Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde" and the 1962 "Phantom of the Opera" films. Those two movies thus cemented the Toccato and Fugue as a horror classic.

My great great uncle was organ player at St. Jacob in Prague. In early 70's he gave 2 hour organ concert in Prague's Rudolfinum. ( Look it up!) Tickets were sold out almost immediately. I asked him for a few for me and my friends. On the night of the concert he let us in by the side entrance and let us sit at the instrument on the floor next to him, us facing the auditorium, our backs resting on the bas pipes section, him sitting on his bench next to us to our right. Czechs have a strange habit. They will not leave any concert hall without so rigorous applause at the end until the artist add some more performance, but of course only if the artist is worthy. ( Aretha Franklin for example had 2 of them when there). My uncle was a quite aged man by then, but still heavenly organ player and his program left people screaming , shouting and stomping in unbridled ovations for more to come. He returned, played another piece, I believe Ce'sar Franck. Another ovation resumed. So he added another rather short piece, I believe his own variations and the same pandemonium commenced. Pandemonium, flowers buckets thrown, people screaming Bravo! So..... he returned again, quite tired now and performed this very piece. Imagine the sound waves penetrating our bodies as we were in physical contact with that magnificent instrument. Then magic happened! After he hit the final reverberating accord everyone present almost in unison got up, some people tossed reminding flowers and quietly, now in complete peace, walked out of the hall, no longer applauding. There was nothing else the audience could do, the pinnacle of music was reached, our souls overflowing, and there wasn't anything else left on our planet Earth to add.

It might be because you have not heard it played by the right people, I highly recommend givin it another shot, in this video "XAVER VARNUS PLAYS BACH'S TOCCATA & FUGUE IN THE BERLINER DOM" the organ player lets the notes reverberate throughout the room before starting the next parts, it is beyond beautiful and truly awe-some, but thats just my 2 cents
@utha2665
@utha2665 Год назад
@@SkylordNiko I agree with you. Hearing Bach's Toccata and Fugue played on the organ, particularly with the right interpretation, can be an awe-inspiring experience. The video you mentioned, "XAVER VARNUS PLAYS BACH'S TOCCATA & FUGUE IN THE BERLINER DOM," showcases the organ player's skill in letting the notes reverberate throughout the room, creating a breathtaking atmosphere. The resonance of the 32' pipes adds a deep, soul-shaking quality to the performance that truly enhances the overall effect. It's an extraordinary rendition that captivates and leaves a lasting impression, something that a piano is just incapable of doing.

You could equally mean scary as in difficulty. Either way, it’s very moving and in a church setting is most definitely intended to inspire awe. Even if you have faith, that could be scary. If people kept to such "wisdom," no-one would ever push themselves to go past their comfort zone. I became a **huge** "Phantom of the Opera" fan back I'm high school. I wanted to learn the music just that badly. So my dad got me the piano-and-vocal songbook. Mom was like, "Don't you think that's a bit above your skill level?" My response? "Maybe, but I've got a great teacher who can help me." And I did. Plus, I practiced that music like crazy, for maybe 2 hours straight (or more!) per day, just because I wanted and needed the blissful escape into a world I knew. By playing that music, I pushed my limits, and I found myself wanting to switch music teachers because the one I had could only teach me so much by that time. But then, that's sort of how I've usually been. 😅

My first thought as I watched this was whether Bach (and other great composers) were blessed with synesthesia. The patterns are so beautiful. Did he "see" the notes he heard in colors like we see in this video? I've read about the mathematics incorporated into his music. When you see this, you wonder if he was incorporating sacred geometry into his composition. Fascinating. As many times as I've listened to this piece of music over my lifetime, "seeing" it like this brought it to life in an entirely new way for me.

Funny you say that, one of my friends who has studied both Bach's music in general and this piece in particular, both extensively came to the conclusion that Bach couldn't have written it due to its unusal simplicity. Basically his analysis was that it was too simple for Bach's genious.. which honestly seems reasonable this is fairly boring compared to most the fugues in das wohltemperierte clavier.
