BWV 668 - recorded here for All of Bach with Ton Koopman - is a closing chorale, possibly even the ultimate closing chorale. Entitled 'Vor deinen Thron tret’ ich hiermit', it is the last of the eighteen ‘Leipziger’ chorale arrangements. An air of incompleteness surrounds the piece, as a somewhat different version comes at the end of the first edition of the 'Kunst der Fuge' from 1751, where it bears the title 'Wenn wir in höchsten Nöten sein'. The main reason for the rather mythical aura surrounding BWV 668 is its special place as the conclusion of both the ‘Leipziger’ chorales and the 'Kunst der Fuge'.

Christoph Wolff wrote something along the lines that this was the most perfect contrapuntal vocal work written. I remember this was such an impactful statement to read and I wonder where the discussion is. Regardless, such fascination from a high influential person when it comes to counterpoint is so interesting and in this case very reasonable, for it really is a masterpiece in all contexts it might be put, and I wish Bach adapted this style more

Even though J.S. Bach, who was already blind at the time, composed tirelessly, and in his rich opus there was also a chorale prelude BWV 668, in which Johan, devoted to God and faith until the very end of his life, offers another jewel to his rich musical treasury 🎵😌🎶 Looking forward to meeting the Lord, he said to his wife Magdalena, “where I am going I will see more beautiful colors and hear music that we, you and I, have only dreamed of until now. And my eye will look at the Lord himself”!

The deathbed chorale is a myth. This work dates from no later than the mid 1740s and was itself derived from a much earlier work, the Orgelbuechlein chorale prelude _Wenn wir in höchsten Nöten sein,_ BWV 642. In his last days, Bach dictated some minor changes.

Wow, Mordents leading to trills leading to finishing embellishments all perfectly done! As an organist all I can tell you is that natural embellishments are extremely hard to do, because you cannot treat each one the same throughout the piece. They all depend on the skill of the artist. where the mordent appears in the linear line, where the stress is, how much space to give each note. What the actual text underlying Bach's woven texture is.

ここでの久々のコープマンの演奏、お疲れさまです(´ω`*) バッハとヘンデルが失明の原因になった（やぶ）医者…もしかしたら当時は誰が手術しても同じだったかも知れませんが、そんな中、最晩年での作曲、そしてこちらの演奏、何とも言えないいい感じですね。まだまだこれからも聴かせてほしいと思います。今日はこれから何回も聴きます。ありがとうございました(´ω`*)

@@stevechandler8847 Not sarcasm. Just to illustrate it: take the chorale at about 0:50: legato. And non-legato in that slow-moving voice is easy to control in the acoustics. Bouyant acoustics present a real problem for organists (and recordists): you need to make non-legato more obvious to yourself than you'd judge appropriate, so back in the gigantic room (or wherever the mikes are) it sounds perfect. You need an assistant to walk around the chamber shouting too much, not enough; I've adjusted my "articulation" (as well as registration) using an assistant like that. It's a serious problem I don't see addressed, at least in RU-vid videos of organ music.

@@tonysouter8095 Having done some organ recording I understand. Please tell me which do you think is easier, change your articulation or move the microphones? Moving the microphones closer will get more direct sound and reduce the reverberation. When I've recorded organs I found there tends to be a sweet spot where the balance between direct and reverberated sound is perfect. BTW, if the non legato is such that random listeners on RU-vid are commenting on it then it's not an adjustment to the room ambience, it's an artistic choice by the performer and subject to criticism.
