I can't believe I've been a rail enthusiast for the best part of 40 years and never knew that the class 47 was so closely related to the class 46. I'll no doubt get flamed like a Burger King Whopper for that but, hey, I've learned something new. Great vid. Keep em coming.

I think it's just the electrical stuff that's the same, rather than the engine too.

Great locomotive, especially for the price. You got a real bargain there!!

Saw some of these lumbering creatures being built at both Crewe and Derby locomotive works and in model form this is beautifully captured , as displayed by your good self. Bachmanns sound version of the "Peaks" is very evocative and a must have for modellers /trainspotters of "a certain vintage" !!

The classes 44, 45 and 46 have something about their presence which I can't put my finger on but I do rather like.

If only I was - I could almost justify marching back to that shop and buying another locomotive at these amazing prices!

I have always liked the Peaks, probably my favourite Diesel/Electric loco of that era, although the 33s were cute too. They have classic and understated lines with those soft rounded curves, a nose which (unlike the 37s and 40s) are in good proportion with the body and, a great sound from those Sulzers. I used to see them in and out of Bristol Temple Meads on the Cross Country routes to the North. I have a (Mainline) 45 that was given to me as a present. It has a broken pony tuck but I am looking forward to repairing it and chipping with sound as soon as I can get a layout built (that may be some time unfortunately) . Loving your channel BTW and your layout for that matter too.

Thanks! You're welcome. I didn't like the Peaks at first, but they grew on me and I have put together one of each of classes 44, 45 and 46. I also want to get the outwardly similar class 40 in model form too.

They used class 46 009 which had been withdrawn and they was going to scrap anyway it was used in that nuclear crash test at old Dalby in Leicester back in 1984

Great video jenny , You got a bargain there especially considering how much a lot of things are going for on Ebay these days , I bet you'd have struggled to pick a brand new One up on there for 60 quid . You were saying about the bogies being adapted for snow ploughs , they did the same with ex cl 40 bogies too.

A bit more info on the class 45. D11 to D15 had both split head code boxes and also centre nose doors. These were removed due to being unreliable and also had a tendency to split when going round curves. They removed the doors and welded a steel plate over the hole left from the doors. Ian

I think they did much the same for the same reasons to all the other diesels with connecting doors in the noses. It was but a brave crewmember who tried to cross loco to loco when the ensemble was on the move. I think that the sole remaining class 28 is the last locomotive still to possess an original set, as the class 28s were all withdrawn before the doors were getting removed, yet one managed to survive to preservation by a ponderous route.

I think the said class 28 was at Peak Rail in a shed at Matlock for a while before being moved to the new home.

Great review Jenny, you certainly did get a bargain there! I've always found the 44-45-46 classes rather awkward looking if I'm honest, they have that 'Class 40 that's ploughed into the buffers' look to them! Nevertheless it's a very nice model, hope it runs well on the layout as well.

I am wanting to ultimately get one each of classes 40 and 44 for the collection, but I'll need to wait until such time that I can find BR TOPS blue examples at a favourable price.

Yes, I don't blame you! Prices are ridiculous these days. One really good shop I've found is S&J Model Railways - they have some fantastic bargains on bachmann and hornby stuff. I've ordered from them before and they were really good - well worth a look - www.sandjmodelrailways.co.uk

always like to see you happy,jenny,nice loco,great video,indeed the prices are getting crazy,an unpowered 4 car emu unit for over 200 pounds I believe in one catalogue.jpj

I've already decided that for a lot of new models I will not even entertain the thought of buying them.
@tjfSIM

That would be the Bachmann 4-TC - a bit on the pricey side although nice for a 4-CIG conversion project! :)

Jennifer E. Kirk this could price railway modelling out of the reach of many people,jpj

John Johnson Totally agree.

They complain about the difficulty attracting new blood to the hobby but the prices are a big turn off , The 4-TC is way over priced for what is essentially 4 MK1 coaches with a driving end stuck 2 of them , I picked up a part completed conversion at a show a few yrs back , needed tidying up , got the whole thing ( 4 coaches) for ten quid ,it looks the part which does me. I've seen Hornby's new releases for next year and the re tooled cl87 which I suspect the price they will sling it out for , you'd be able to get 2 mint boxed Lima examples with a rake of coaches for the same price .

Good bargain for the first run of their Class 44 to 46, ommission of the joint line on the nose & no lights I have this one & scribed the joint line in

Do you know when exactly this model was released by Bachmann? I'm trying to work out when exactly all the new locomotives still in the cabinet at this shop actually were new.
@GregPalmer1000
@GregPalmer1000 7 лет назад
Jennifer E. Kirk I believe this loco was first announced in 2003. I cant be sure but I purchased mine in 2004 from my Cdn supplier for $125 Cdn along with a class 44 (both did not have the nose seams modelled) btw these were all new tooling not the original x mainline ones. Of course these "peaks" have been retooled again by Bschmann with nose seams, all axle drive & directional lighting & of course DCc ready. as 32-701 was not dcc ready.

Nice loco. shame the shops so far away might need to give them a call check for some class 66s.
@JenniferEKirk
@JenniferEKirk 7 лет назад
I don't remember any 66s, but then they aren't a locomotive that would normally catch my eye. Most of the locomotives were steam classes from what I remember.

Jennifer E. Kirk thanks. finding it hard to track them down. some in the pipeline but again the tooling is not changed but bachmann prices have gone up.

The best thing I can suggest is Googling the telephone number for the shop and asking him what he has in stock in the cabinets upstairs. He did also have a few bits and pieces secondhand, but again I counldn't say what they were.

Think I'll pop over on saturday not to faraway from me, if it's the shop I think your on about.
