I haven't played much of Back4Blood because none of my friends could've been bothered after the first couple of levels to keep playing. But the amount of scavanging broke my spirit after just one level. There are a ton of guns, some with rarity and random stats you have to check and compare at every corner, attachements, different items, money, specific ammo you have to share with your team. It's way too much for a game that wants you to be always in a hurry. Then there's this card system for whatever reason and maybe some stuff I don't even know about. Just to be more complex, to have more "depth", to be more replayable than the original Left4Dead. And the steam stats show how well that panned out.

This is why I just play WWZ now. Only get ammo at ammo crates The biggest thing I loved about L4D was all the zombies and most specials could be taken down very quickly which made you feel powerful, IF you had the ammo and skill to hit them before they could get to you. This trend of making enemies more bullet spongey and less realistic has driven me crazy Also the first time I played the Beta I played with bots, I jumped up on a buildings rooftop ledge and my bot companion jumped OFF the roof trying to get to me. Yeah.. It’s so sad that devs have forgotten that letting the fans mod your game makes it so EVERYONE will buy the game eventually if someone creates a mod that’s required to play. Counter strike.. DayZ mod.. Both mods sold so many game copies over the years. And sadly Evolve would’ve been a fun game and still been alive if they didn’t make the entire game a giant micro transaction

Their biggest mistake is mentioning L4D, which is unavoidable. L4D was made by valve, the same people that made Half-Life and turned the FPS genre around. The same people that own Steam, that means they have an unlimited amount of budget. Now, do you think that your little indie dev team with limited budget can come close to those bastards that don't need to release a game to make millions?
@DuVious1
@DuVious1 2 года назад
When Left 4 Dead came out, Steam was not the powerhouse it was today. Valve, when making L4D, was still a rather small company with limited money. Turtlerock, when making B4B, is a company with Warner Bros. publishing it, with Tencent helping Turtlerock develop it. It's mind-boggling to think that with the support of 2 companies worth millions, Turtlerock still shit out a mediocre game where the small game company Valve was at the time, made a genre-moving FPS shooter. This is the difference between TR and Valve, TR wants money and all the original talent (except for 6-7 members) have left. Valve wants to move the bar forward, releasing gorgeous games with gorgeous storylines. When you hear Turtlerock, do you think "These people made amazing games with amazing stories!" No, you think of Left 4 Dead, then you think of EVOLVE and B4B. When you hear Valve, you think "God, they make amazing games with amazing storylines and IPs." You think of Half-Life 1/2/Alyx, Portal 1/2, Aperture Desk Job, Counter-Strike, and Left 4 Dead 1/2. (I would include TF2, but that's not rly a story game unless you read the comics, RIP.) The only reason Turtlerock is still alive, is because they're parading a dead horse on a stick. "From the Creators of Left 4 Dead." The reason Valve is still alive and talked about, is because they made loveable games with loveable characters while moving the bar forward.
@SaltCane
@SaltCane 2 года назад
They could've made it work. A budget isn't an issue when you're competing with a game from the 2000's, because the budget can be offset with the advantages of way more modern game development technology. If they were smart and actually understood the things that made L4D2 what it is, they could've improved on the formula minus the extra graphical and environmental details. Most of the issues of B4B never boil down to budget, it boils down to incompetent game design. Not to mention that the budget for L4D wasn't even that large and neither was Steam in general. Back 4 Blood just has zero excuses, it's just a mediocre game made by mediocre developers.

Literally everything about Back 4 Blood is the complete antithesis of its spiritual predecessor. Left 4 Dead 1 & 2: Protagonists are survivors trying to get to safety and often comment on their situation adding depth to their character Back 4 Blood: Uberbadass Hipster Gen Z Zombie hunters ridding the world of zombies and dropping one-liners. Left 4 Dead 1 & 2: Clearly meant to be a horror game in the first entry with arcadey, yet challenging shooter gameplay, even if part 2 shifted to a Dead Rising-inspired zombie action comedy (and succeeded, too) Back 4 Blood: Modern Military Shooter about beating the crap out of zombies. Left 4 Dead 1 & 2: Treats the monsters/special infected as special enemies with devastating attacks and unique music cues Back 4 Blood: The special infected are everywhere and are regular enemies. I could go on, and on, but I can't. What I will say is that it is clear that the Turtle Rock that worked on Left 4 Dead wound up becoming part of Valve, and it shows in Back 4 Blood as the latter is basically the kind of game made by soulless AAA developers for the lowest common denominator (aka. Gaming Generation Z as I call said lowest denominator). And don't even get me started on how it adds to the lot of action titles about badass warriors beating the crap out of zombies (barring Resident Evil 2 Remake and the Dying Light franchise). There's far more fun, fright, blood, detail and entertainment in a single campaign of Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 than there is in all of Back 4 Blood, and honestly? You're better off picking up Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 for your fix. If you want something similar, Killing Floor 1 should scratch that itch, too.

Your comment's very biased though. The left 4 dead 1 and 2 protagonists also drop one-liners. The back 4 blood protagonists are also on a mission, fighting for the safety of their home, rescuing other survivors and finding a way to eliminate the zombies permanently. So what defines horror in your perspective? Jumpscares? There's the sleepers, who pounce on you if you're caught unaware, kinda like hunters. The charger/tallboy smashing you into the ground? The zombies from both games who swarm you but can be dealt with the use of pipebombs? What exactly is different in that back 4 blood is not arcadey, yet challenging shooter gameplay? Your 3rd comment doesn't make alot of sense, special infected are special enemies, when are they regular enemies in back 4 blood? What does that even mean? They're tougher to kill, do more damage, and don't spawn as frequently as regular zombies. You could go on but you can't because your points are all just heavily biased and false trying to find faults where there are none. @@bluenicholasbf2142 Horror is defined as fear toward an entity or an object. In L4D, the fear is brought up by the grim atmosphere in the background or the devastating sceneries surrounding them. In B4B, fear isn't really experienced properly since the game took a comedic undertone and instead it is annoying since every successful horror films out there can assure that horror≠constant fear. It needs build up, like how L4D had music cues before infected actions to indicate their presence, subconciously making the survivors take a big fat look around their surroundings. This is horror, making the players acknowledge that it indeed is something to fear. Hearing the tank spawn when all your team is at low HP would spike your heart rate up. And in B4B, no such fear is ingrained in the players. When fears are constant, it becomes utterly annoying. That's why sleep paralysis is scary; because it doesn't happen often. There's no build up in B4B because it can't. B4B is more or less just a brainless zombie shooter. Because the zombies are not really much of a threat. B4B is s good game with a great potential. Unfortunately, the game is unsophisticated and doesn't really live up to the idea of "From the creators of L4D". Also, even Evolve is a good game with a great potential. Who knows, it might become a new Evolve under Turtle Rock Studio's belt. With how the game is progressing, I wouldn't be surprised. Also, L4D may have one liners but this is acceptable because the characters themselves have personalities. Nick's sentence at the end of the intro is an example of it. It sells his character of being a prideful man. And the characters have personalities you would believe in RL and that they would talk to each other or about their surroundings is a great plus which is one of the major flaws in B4B as their characters have no depth but rather a description about themselves and that's it.

I was hopeful that the issues that my friends and I encountered would be ironed out after it launched. From the beginning, I was expecting it to be a spiritual successor rather than a straight up rehashing of L4D's formula 1-1, so I was never monumentally disappointed like many people were. But now, I am quite disappointed with the direction they've been taking the game since it's launch. For example, instead of developing the characters that already exist, they pulled an Overwatch and just kept adding more characters with their own gimmicks.

I adore L4D with its simplicity. It is what makes its gameplay works. No need weapon tiers, attachments, deck building, etc. You can simply hop into L4D and play without too much worries that you're missing on guides or tier lists. It's not that gameplay mechanics that make players have to keep up on their toes are bad, it's that if there are too much of it, it becomes a major hindrance to the overall enjoyment.

But it also expands on L4D like its mongolian hordes of zombies washing over buildings, streets, over wreckages and so on, heavy weapons which are one time use WMDs against said zombies, and a progression and perk system that isn't mixing and mashing cards but instead picking a set of 9 perks (1 per column of 3 perks to pick) for each class which paves a way to play within a playstyle like an explosive ammo fixer or a masking gas fixer. Although WWZ is imperfect with its characters and such, I only care about the gameplay, and hot damn does it deliver gameplay through mag dumping into a sea of bloodthirsty zombies and skeet shooting lurkers (WWZ's hunters that hide in corners)

It scared off a lot of players. *Lack of an offline solo campaign mode in the first months. *The fact you really really have to depend on team playing and people give up after round 1 and the fun gets sucked out. *The developers try to create a niche product but fail misserable. If I see, say, FromSoftware I know from scratch I will have a really really hard time from A to Z. Same applies for Capcom fighting games. One thing I rarely see mentioned too is the taser/Evangelo passive, where they can brake you out of a grab/pin/incapacitation almost instantly with relatively no cost (one is purchasable in the shops the other is on a like 30 sec cooldown). Left 4 Dead, PURPOSEFULLY AVOIDED THIS SHIT to force people to stick as a team instead of going solo. Of course people are gonna be able to speedrun in pubs when there's literally an item to prevent them from dying due to their selfishness. What's the point of teammates when I can do it myself ? What's the point of sticking up to prevent specials from doing much damage when you can just drop your "No U" uno card on them and kill them. Why bother to be with 3 other players ?
@captainwin6333
@captainwin6333 2 года назад
It's an ability with a 60 second cool down. If one player on Evangelo decides to run through the map, there's a greater chance his team mates wont survive, especially if they're not good players which means the rewards at the end of the map will be less and in the 120 hours I've now had in public games, I've seen one guy doing that. Towards the end of my time in Left4Dead2 however, the amount of games where someone joined and team killed everyone before starting a vote to kick someone else then leaving only to rejoin and do the same again, well, it just became pointless. Speedrunning L4D was literally a thing before B4B was even thought about. That's how me and a few friends used to play the game after playing for hundreds of hours, the only challenge left was seeing how fast you could go from one safe room to the next. The PVE in Left4Dead games is easy on every level.

@@bluenicholasbf2142 Due to how fragile most L4D infected are, you still can progress in solo, but it would require rather high awareness and precision. B4B went in wrong direction with interface - when you have health bar of some boss enemy, they stop being scary and become simply annoying. While in L4D, when you encounter Tank, one always remains scary, as you are always guessing, how much shots one will take before falling down.
@bluenicholasbf2142
@bluenicholasbf2142 2 года назад
@@ceu160193 In B4B, there are certain mutations in every map, some of which include 'lights out' where the map is darker, or 'fog' where the map has a haze, all of which make it much harder to see enemies, especially sleepers on walls, so that too requires very high awareness and precision, to be able to react and shoot the sleeper before it pounces on you. Sure stun gun or the breakout ability can give you one free escape, but it's a one time use or has a one minute cooldown for evangelo/the card, so you can't exactly keep repeating the same mistake over and over again anyway. I get your point on healthbar on a boss, but the word 'annoying' doesn't really fit it. People get annoyed, when something doesn't go the way their way even if they do things correctly; in the case of games like L4D and B4B, maybe you accidentally trigger the alarm while you were shooting at something else, or a special infected still pounces on you even though you did seemingly avoid it. So saying that you can now see the enemy's health is 'annoying' doesn't make any sense at all. Less intimidating / more predictable would be a more appropriate term for what you're trying to say. If you play L4D enough, you can get a relatively good gauge on when a tank is going to die, with or without a healthbar. I wouldn't call myself a expert player, but I find tanks in L4D somewhat easier to deal with than the bosses in B4B anyway, especially on higher difficulties. The tank has very predictable attack patterns, it's not too hard to dodge the rocks it throws at you. Whereas the breaker (closest boss to the tank), feels more intimidating and scary especially when they jump at you and that jump is more difficult to avoid.

The game primarily focuses ridden spawns and attacks on the person closest to the end safe room. As a result speed running Evangelo will get caught by everything first, unless they can directly dodge hocker spits and crusher grabs reliably, (crushers certainly can be but hockers and stalkers are a bit tougher). This does usually happen, then the speed runner claims everyone else was shit and the remainder continue to play as a team and enjoy themselves :P

I liked the card system to a degree when I played the beta as it added variety but I was quickly concerned with balance, you have all these factors at play that are randomized; the tier of your weapon, the attachments you find for them, the cards you find/the random selection you get to choose from, while it in theory adds replayability, it makes the game a lot harder to balance because each run you're going to be stronger/weaker in certain things, if you look at something like L4D, you know exactly how much health you're gonna have, once you've played for a while you'll know the ammo capacity and the damage of the guns, how much damage the infected do to you and how quick they are to kill etc etc, it's all very obvious, you quickly learn your limits (for example, everyone remembers a well placed shotty to the back of a witches head oneshots it) and there's no factors interfering with your stats, your guns stats or the zombies stats which in turn makes balancing very easy, now I'm not saying it would be impossible for B4B to be balanced but it'd be a lot harder because of those factors (and it was shown with the harder difficulties being too hard) and I think the main way they combated this is with the special ridden being bullet sponges with weak spots as it essentially shifts the blame to the player "ah this ridden isn't poorly balanced, you just need to get good and hit the glowy spot" it's basically a cop out because they can both under tune the health and just call it a "weak spot" whilst simultaneously over tuning the health to cover all bases and not have to balance it. Also wasn't a fan of each special ridden having multiple types, on paper it's nice to have more variety but comparing them to the designs of the special infected in L4D, you knew and learned pretty quickly from sight and sound what each special infected was and did, now maybe I haven't played B4B enough to give it credit or to distinguish them but I struggled to tell which one is which for pretty much all of them the entire time I played and for a while when I started playing I didn't even realise there was multiple types for each one, I just thought they had multiple attacks or something. I hated the big boss enemies, lumbering bullet sponges that didn't incite any sort of fear, the pacing with the design is just really off, that's what made the tank from L4D so memorable, it's still a big beefy intimidating looking thing, but it's small enough that it moves threateningly and not cumbersome with incredibly telegraphed attacks and you weren't just out ranging him or sitting in a doorway laughing at him because the tank could get just about anywhere and pummel your ass into the dirt, this game lacked a LOT of tension for me, even the basic zombies just didn't feel particularly threatening or scary, I think the ultimate irony is at the end of it all I really did feel like a Cleaner, like I was working a 9-5 as a janitor just sweeping up zombies and the weird flesh bulbs they leave around the place, none of it really felt memorable or stood out or made me want to experience it again which is something L4D managed to do with less customization, loot, special infected, bosses and random elements. Last edit: The flashlight! I had to come back after hearing you mention it because it was a big gripe I had at the time, what people probably can't put their finger on or don't realise whilst playing B4B is that having control over your flashlight is a massive, MASSIVE atmosphere changer especially if you put the player in scenarios where it's either beneficial or necessary to turn it off because it then presents to them the decision of proceeding and potentially screwing something up (like the witches in L4D) or essentially giving up their means of vision, it also allows muzzle flash to provide low level light in darkened fire fights which REALLY adds to the atmosphere, having a flashlight that automatically turns on in the dark and can't be turned off is genuinely the most pointless shit ever, it's completely missing the point of adding dark areas to begin with, and that's tension and atmosphere but no, we need to be handheld like babies and have our little night light turned on for us so we don't accidentally get scared in the dark.

The biggest fault B4B has in my opinion is the fact that the game feels really dull like the Characters being this edgy personality Wise like this Need for Speed bs or Battlefield 2042 while in L4D the characters felt real because they had more depth to them like Francis showing signs of Island Phobia (I hope i remember it correctly) and with him hinting on it in a different way every time and one of the characters reacting to it in their own way while not being edgy which just gave this whole conversation so much more life. There are dozens of things were L4D is just way way better but even viewing B4B on its own shows how it unterperforms as nothing in this game feels like it matters or has any depth to it. and considering that it is a newer game with worse AI for the Crew and the Zombies, it just makes the whole game really boring in my eyes. Also The Fox Francis is a Mod i would pay for instead for B4B, probably even more Money than if i were to buy B4B

The best part, absolute best part of that final boss was my shotgun deck i was using being made completely useless because they didnt give us a single shotgun at the start of that mission. Three times in a row we reset trying to get weapons that fit our loadouts. A single mission ago we had the perfect loadouts. I had my shotgun and desert eagle built exactly how i wanted them to be and then this act decided to take them all away again just like every other act did. Except this act is just one damn mission against a bullet sponge boss with weapons you dont get to decide to pass on. Imagine a game like Diablo, where you level your wizard throughout the game and then you reach the final boss. They take away your super powerful staff, and then give you a battle axe and say go kill Diablo.

I lost interest when I saw a gameplay video in December 2020, I said then "Unless they recognise the success of Evolve this game will be a failure." and I guess they didn't. Left 4 Dead was a survival horror where everything was meant to be realistic (to an extent), where you could die at any time, where literally the only objective was to survive. I remember feeling my heart rate increase when about to complete a campaign on expert. I didn't particularly like the more casual unrealistic left 4 Dead 2 though, it was more of a fun coop shooter. But this, this just looks like a cartoony console casual coop shooter with no substance, I haven't played it and probably won't unless it goes free. Which is sad because I was one of the biggest fans of Left 4 Dead, played it for maybe 700 - 1000 hours and 2 for around 250. The fact Back 4 Blood released 12 years after Left 4 Dead 2 and somehow feels like a downgrade in every possible way really goes to show you how far gaming has fallen. Also, with how few people are playing this game (2,900), how long will it be until the devs/publishers call it quits and shut down the servers? You would have thought they would have reduced the price, but even with an almost non-existent player base, the game is still £50/€60/$70, and they're still selling a season pass that is nearly as expensive as the game itself. With parasites being the reason for the zombies, they could have been so much more creative with the enemy design, with giving the zombies more insectoid characteristics, like chitin armor, mandibles, spider limbs or half human-half insect mosntrosities, like in the The Fly movie. It really just seems like every fundamental aspect that made Left 4 Dead so good was completely thrown out the window. I don't know if this was from the developers themselves or if this was something that like... they had a publisher demand that they include due to the popularity of Fortnite among kids, but it just comes across as a pathetic excuse to pander to the age group that Left 4 Dead was popular with when that game came out. Like instead of making a game that finds an audience because the game was good, they targeted what 13 year old kids today were interested in thinking that they could somehow ride another wave of success via the 13 year old age group that Left 4 Dead was so popular with.

The issue you have with ammunition shortage is easily worked around, and it’s also not being done justice here. The reason you or other players are experiencing the lack of ammo is simple, if everyone runs around using Rifles, then the team will run out of rifle ammo, it’s that simple. It encourages team work to spread out the use of different guns within the team, as they all have a different purpose. Shotguns deal stumble damage, countering Reekers etc in close quarters, SMG and Melee clears hordes, Rifles do damage, while Snipers mainly deal Weakspot damage and more effective range (this is generalisation). Also, players that use their primary gun on commons will find they have less ammo to deal with hordes and special infected, again, this is easily worked around by simply using your secondary until then. The reason you are finding that specials require a lot of bullets, is because players are wasting ammo on them with guns that don’t do damage (SMG) if you don’t have a player specialising in weakspot damage (Jim) which he alone with Patient Hunter and Hyper Focused (2 cards you can play in the first round of any act), can literally half the life or kill any tallboy by himself, thus not wasting ammo from other players and making this a non issue. Ammo is an ecosystem in this game, and there are more of them, with Damage, Weakspot damage, Speed, Upgrades, Healing, Trauma healing, and ammo is only one of them. Also, none of the ridden in this game carry around ammo as a default. This only happens if you run a specific card, or Hoffman. You can also play Ammo stash to give your secondary infinite ammo. There are a ton of simple ways to play within the ammo system in the game, it can run as deep as you and your team want. I don’t know know why players choose to see this whole thing as a downside and not as another cool team aspect to the game.

I have a direct response to most of these critiques that I just uploaded, if you can spare the time for a listen. I figure it’s fair to have both sides of the critique. Mind you I’m not a professional video creator either

What made the first 2 left for dead games great , was the ability to run around and blast off with unlimited hand gun ammo and PLENTIFUL secondary ammo . It was very basic and straight forward. Run around , point and shoot. Back 4 food was slow paced and made things a bit boring . I'm just happy it wasn't called Left for Dead 3 . There's still hope 🙏

They shouldn't have marketed it as "from the creators of left 4 dead" because it felt more like the last of us in steroids.

if this had mod support, then it will truly be the successor of L4D

infact,i wouldnt say successor since they didnt reuse the original l4d/l4d2 characters for more lore

They shouldn't have prefaced the entirety of the game's existence as a "spiritual successor" to L4D. Should they say something like: "This is our own take of what L4D could be in present times but no way would it be perfect." instead of going there and saying it's like L4D. Seriously, a game from 2008 can have thousands of death animations and infected variations, somewhat better gunplay, mod supports that keeps content from coming without it getting stale, campaign VS, and spiltscreen (at least on the console versions) - why can't Back 4 Blood have it too? Mods, to be specific, can be locked to PC-only servers. Playing with them disables crossplay (not sure why people keep disagreeing that B4D having no mods is okay because it's crossplay). The game is still fresh, I get that, and that's why I'm waiting at least a year later to see if Turtle Rock improved the game or left it as is (or you can say... left for dead... hehe). And sure, be it nostalgia, but L4D deserves it. The game is still supported to this day with an active playerbase. If TRS abandons B4B in the next two or three years, it won't be a surprise.

One thing I'd like to mention is the overall lack of music to support the game's mood, i.e. when a special zombie spawns in L4D2 you hear a sting that indicates which one or when you're attacked by, say, a smoker you hear dramatic music that heightens that feeling of intensity and highlights the stakes of you being helpless to fight back. In B4B there is no special music. Each special zombie spawns with such high frequency that it would be chaotic to hear their stings every time, for example. When you're in a DBNO state, whether that's being grabbed by a hunter or just going down, everyone just hears this really annoyingly loud siren noise. It's akin to your alarm in the morning; you don't stop it because you typically want to, you stop it because it's annoying the shit out of you.

The basic question that determines whether a single-player game is good or not is, usually, "Is this game fun to play?". To put it simply, if the answer is "yes" then the game is good, but if the answer is "no" then... well, guess what? It's bad. However, there are a handful of specific questions that only a small number of developers ask themselves while they're working on a *multiplayer* game instead. Those questions are "What makes this game special when compared to its competitors?", "Do you see yourself playing this game 5 years from now?" and "Who's the target audience?" A lot of multi games die because, as fun as they may initially appear to be, don't really lend themselves to extended replayability and offer very little variety so even if they are "technically functional" or "fun to play" you really cannot see yourself playing them for more than 2 hours, let alone half a decade. Especially with better and far more original products in the market. Back 4 Blood doesn't even try to answer those aforementioned questions with a "yes" or "no" and just awkwardly tosses them under the rug, hoping that no one notices. It is, for the most part, an expensive, technically outdated, aesthetically generic, utterly charmless Left 4 Dead clone that I'm 100% sure exists solely so that Turtle Rock can recover their losses with Evolve thanks to a marketing stunt built on lies. Let's think about it and be serious, no bias or personal preferences involved. Back 4 Blood rarely goes over 5k on Steam, constantly hovering between 2-3k while its spiritual "predecessor" pretty much stays over 20k constantly. Cast your appreciation for Back 4 Blood aside and tell me: is this game going to have a healthy playerbase in 2025? As for the third question... Who is this game supposed to appeal to? Casual players who are not attracted at all by a game with a steep learning curve? Hardcore players that can quench their thirst with superior games? COD players looking for a zombie game that isn't their *own* in-game zombie mode? Left 4 Dead fans that already have Left 4 Dead and are quite satisfied with it with no intention of changing? I'm not saying that no one should ever try to do something original with the Left 4 Dead formula because "there is Left 4 Dead already", that's a terrible mentality that I do not endorse because there's ALWAYS room for improvement for every successful formula, but is Back 4 Blood really the answer to that need of innovation? I really don't think so and, if the player count is anything to go by, I don't think I'm the only one to think this. I dunno. I feel like saying anything meaningful about Back 4 Blood is kinda pointless right now. It's out and they can't make miracles with patches or additional content and its reputation took a big blow the moment many people played the beta and noticed things were definitely off. I want it to improve and be better because it's always terrible to see games failing, but I don't see things changing for the best. It feels like we're watching a corpse decompose and there are two kinds of people: the ones leaving the room because the body smells and the others still shouting the dead guy's name, hoping that they can wake up and answer. Meh.
