Just a quick check in, after my arrival back from Peters Heat Treating. These Uddeholm Elmax blades are looking GOOD!

edc4 again? You already have them in stock, why make more when demand for others such as GSO5.1, or edc 3 even is high, and no in stock? dont understand why edc4 again....

I just made a morning reflections video, and opened up with that conversation topic. I hope that helps. Thanks for reaching out, for sharing your thoughts and for bringing this up, your ideas help me create better content. Have a wonderful day! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r-C6IxcjMLQ.htmlfeature=shared

Good stuff! Glad to see your rolling along. Side note… The Elmax on my EDC-4 truly surprised me! It OVER performed in my opinion. I put it through hell during testing and it did amazing. Thanks for making us top notch USA made knives.👊👌

Excited to see some stainless options coming back on the table! It seems like magnacut might still be what it seemed when it first came out, too good to be true. Do you have any plans to work with Vanax? It seems like you get basically all the benefits of Elmax with quite a bit of added toughness. I'm not sure if it is exorbitantly expensive vs Elmax or if quantities are super limited but it seems like a great option for a thinner mid-sized knife like the 4.5 bushcraft.

We will be getting a small piece of Vanax in for testing shortly. You are right though, it is extremely expensive. I want to ensure manufacturability and performance before committing to anything.

Guy, what angle do you sharpen the ffg at?
@Surviveknives
@Surviveknives 7 месяцев назад
20° per side, it is done on a CNC, water cooled, sharpening set up now. You can lean it back, but I found that to be most useful, for most users from the factory.

Guy, I think you said you saw the voids and inclusions emerge in the CPM stuff when you were doing your peening process. If you don't mind, show B&U knives going through peening and show us the results. Your critics point out that you never show THAT part of the process, of course implying you're doing something dishonest.

Oh Man, it would be my PLEASURE to share that on my next round of part finishing. As you can see in recently posted emails though, we have seen these issues at all stages of production. I've also sent samples to Niagara specialty metals, from all stages of production. That is very clear in the internal emails I released. Some of the most notable examples are right off the Blanchard grinder. Like here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8nM-OTat2uM.htmlfeature=shared Small people are always going to have their small thoughts and fast opinions. Often in the face of overwhelming evidence contrary to their opinion based beliefs. They'll see soon enough. This is all wrapping up.

I always loved Elmax but these batches since coming back east, with the optimized heat treat standards, REALLY perform. Being back here and more directly involved with Peters Heat Treating has been amazing. I'm so happy with how all of these European steels are processing. I finally understand that our standards are totally achievable, without driving me crazy.

Elmax is fantastic. Any thoughts on using K340 in the future? Great steel when heat treated properly!
@Surviveknives
@Surviveknives 7 месяцев назад
I will always want to do a sample batch, but my initial inclination is that I trust any of Bohler PM steels. The K340 looks like an ESR grade, not many stand out properties for a knife blade. Can you sell me on a use case where maybe Vanadis 4E or K890 wouldn't do the job a bit better? I'm not saying no, I just want to know what's on your mind. In any case, thanks for stopping by and for sharing your thoughts with me. 👊

Is there any chance you guys would try out K390 in the future? In my experience its the most well rounded tool steel Bohler makes. Super tough like 3v with at least 3 times the edge holding.
@Surviveknives

Yes, we are actually looking at that as an option for some smaller knives. Thanks for bringing it up though, I appreciate you guys sharing your thoughts.

Hello Guy, glad to see manufacturing so streamlined and hope the cpm debacle goes your way. I ordered a 2.7 in magnacut on 11/12/22 and am wondering what its status is?
@Surviveknives
@Surviveknives 7 месяцев назад
Those were unfortunately all affected by that decarburizing, but we are getting more moved through production. We consolidated to the EDC-3 as the standard. Same handle but the profile generally suits this little fella a bit better. We covered that here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NvnPvU3myIc.htmlfeature=shared

I ordered a EDC-4 in Magnacut in November of 2023 then switched to Elmax in the beginning of this month. I know you’ve got a load going on, but what would be a reasonable time frame to expect delivery?
@Surviveknives
@Surviveknives 7 месяцев назад
That will either be on the assembly table or on the buffing bench. That should leave this week. If you have an order number, message it to me and I will go find it while I am buffing edges. 😉 I enjoy personalized photo updates.

I appreciate your commitment to only sending quality out the door! But I am wondering, you said you're working on GSO 4.5s. Does that include the current k890 preorders that are up on the website, or is that only the magnacut replacements?
@Surviveknives
@Surviveknives 7 месяцев назад
The K890 blades on order and available for preorder are in the batch finishing up now. They are being finished right alongside the magnacut orders, although the Bohler Uddeholm materials finish up a lot easier. That progress is much faster, making this situation wrapping up the CPM products that much more frustrating. 🫠

When will the EDC 2.7’s be done?
@Surviveknives
@Surviveknives 7 месяцев назад
The decarburizing ruined most of that batch but we are making more. We are mostly just waiting to get sheaths set back up, some of these issues stalled some projects, but we are getting it back on track. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NvnPvU3myIc.htmlfeature=shared

Is NSM the only steel mill that you can buy Magnacut from?
@Surviveknives
@Surviveknives 7 месяцев назад
Yes, they are the exclusive roller of CPM alloys. If you are getting it from another source, it still comes from them.

Good to see things coming together. One thing you should do is update the Production Schedule on your website. You may want to consider sharing the counts of knives actually going out the door.
@Surviveknives
@Surviveknives 7 месяцев назад
Ellie is working on an update to the production schedule but she's also building knives all day. We are working on it though! Counts? We have piles of knives leaving here. We share updates, you can clearly see things leaving, lots of new things coming in. Who else even brings you into the shop this much? I do my best with my cell phone, but at the end of the day, we're a manufacturer, not a content creator. Even the amount of videos and photos I share now gets pretty tedious to keep up with. I hope you can understand. We are only five people, and I do all of the social media, as well as a bunch of stuff in the shop. I have to sleep sometime.

I love any feedback! If you have a review, just send me the link, and I would be happy to watch it. I do this for you guys, so I love to see the photos and videos of happy people. Believe it or not, I really did not want to be a manufacturing company. I'm doing this because I know we do a good job and we bring something of value to the world. I never want to deviate from that.

You aren't lying, I am dying to revisit that. We had done a run of those years back, long before we controlled our own manufacturing. I loved it then, and the performance is even better now, with the optimized heat treating.

Maybe dude doesnt show his entire manufacturing process for a reason. There is a reason their product are as nice as they are. Also looking all the videos of the blanks cut you cant fake chemistry. So if they are sent off to a lab Crucible is the only one making these chemistries and Niagra is the only one rolling. So if theres voids which cant be manufactured into the steel or non metallic inclusions or un welded powder they will show up in examination. Either the starting material is good or not.
@Surviveknives

You get it, on all accounts. Some of the things we do in here were very hard earned lessons. I am an open book unless something is proprietary and cost us a lot of time or money to develop. That is the competitive advantage in a small business. All of the seasoned metallurgists also agree with you, 110%. I will have some of these voids under a microscope in a couple days, to show you guys better what is going on. I am excited to show you an example of a subsurface delamination pocket. The trolls will have an especially hard time explaining that one.

Hey Man, it says built, so it will be on the bench waiting to be buffed. That will go out this week. Sorry, I took myself out for my birthday tonight or I would just post a photo on IG for you. Having a 1/2 roasted chicken and a hummus plate. I remember birthdays being more fun when I was a kid. 😂
