Back From the Dead - Africa's Extraordinary Resurrection Bush

In the dry season it shrivels up and appears to die completely. But, at the first drop of rain, it miraculously comes back to life. This is the incredible Resurrection Bush, Myrothamnus flabellifolia, from southern Africa. Myrothamnus contains unique compounds that protect its cells during the periods of desiccation and enable them to rehydrate fully and undamaged as soon as moisture is available. Scientists have been researching these compounds for use in skincare, and a number of products have recently been launched based on extracts of this remarkable plant. In this episode, Gus, the African Plant Hunter, gives an introductory overview to the plant, to be followed with more detail in future episodes.

It’s a shame that this channel is so small. I’m happy I found it but sad as it shows how only a few people still care about nature and the amazing things it can do. Edit: love the videos and the info you give by the way I’m glad people like you exist so people like me stuck in a city get to see things like this without going massively out my way and dropping everything.

Unfortunately not easily cultivated this one. Although I feel it would be relatively easy for a skilled horticulturalist, but none have yet tried to grow this, to the best of my knowledge.

@AfricanPlantHunter
@AfricanPlantHunter 4 года назад
Unfortunately you won't find its seeds available anywhere, as no-one is currently propagating it. It's only being (sustainably) harvested from the wild. Sorry about that. You'll just have to come to Africa and see it in its natural environment!
@pollymenina
@pollymenina 4 года назад
African Plant Hunter been there already, South Africa. Unfortunately didn’t know the plant at the time! Cape Town is very beautiful, and the dryness is very similar to Brazil’s Northwest states, but here is more humid at the shore and we have a very much stronger sun. Plants here have a hard time surviving long periods without rain, mostly only cactus survive. Thanks for the videos, I’m loving it!!
@AfricanPlantHunter
@AfricanPlantHunter 4 года назад
@@pollymenina Thanks for the kind words. I'm really happy you're enjoying the videos! Next time you come to Africa, check me out in Zimbabwe. A bit further north than Cape Town, and a slightly more humid climate. But still pretty dry. And we have plenty of Resurrection bush!
