The Malta Railway serviced the Mdina to Valletta route for nearly 50 years and proved quite popular when it was introduced in 1883, cutting down to 25 minutes a trip that would otherwise last three and a half hours on a mule-drawn cart.
The efficient railway was designed by the same team which 25 years earlier had drawn up the plans for the London Tube. The British wanted to extend the system to the north and south of Malta, including Gozo.
