Hi Chris! I'm glad you're gonna be in Chiang Mai longer... We are gonna go around May. I would love to see vlogs of the day to day in Chiang Mai... I don't mind if it's repetitive. Also, I would like to hear more about your projects!!
Hey Chris can you rate your skill levels in css, javascript and any other languages you knew when you started being a web developer 1-10 please. Awesome videos!
Will be interesting to see how you manage your money, saves and stuff. Also, some tips to travel around Asia. Keep doing the vlogs, this lifestyle is my goal this year.
I'm an old git - 52 soon - and I'm trying to reason with a kid half my age right now about the reality of being a digital nomad. The fact is that the world's full of skilled people, and reducing your overheads still leaves you with the fundamental fact that you've no defensible advantage - no real way of limiting competition. So, basically, it's as hard to earn your living as it would be anywhere else, and arguably - given the logistical problems - a bit harder. No?
Good tip on Zood Zood. I've walked past there many times and thought it might be too expensive. From the image, it looks like much better quality than food from a street stall would be. You are in a high rent district this time. I live just about ten minutes from your area and my rent is almost half what yours is, with more space. The building is older, but still very nice. It does have a pool, but not a gym. I go to a local gym just a few blocks away. With a one year membership, my rent cost is still lower than your monthly rent.
That apartment looks quite nice, the extras (gym + pool) are also cool if you're staying for three months even if you're paying a bit more. Care to say the place name? I might be interested in checking that out next time I come to CM.
Comfortable looking apartment, Chris. Is that with electricity included? I was paying 5500 for a studio in BKK but after electricity and internet it was usually closer to 10,500.
Great content Chris. Future vid thought- A comparison of internet speed / reliability on the places you've been? And can you use phone as backup - eg 3G hotspots?
Hi Chris I loved your last interview with David Bond. I think you are a great interview host and I suggest in 2017 if you could do more interviews even with non digital nomads but people who have some unique skills that could be of benefit to all. best of luck and keep up the good work.
Love hearing about the cost of daily life. The apartment tour was really good. We went to Big C in Patong and I couldn't believe the stuff they had for sale. One of the things that really made me laugh were the English tshirts with just random words on them. lol
Hey Chris, dont worry about repeating yourself, its all about the lifestyle, the grinding and hustling . Nice keyboard case by the way, where can I order one? ;-)
+Chris the Freelancer I think it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the "Digital Nomad C.V" that brings together your wealth of knowledge to talk about things from how to structure/present yourself on freelancing sites and appeal to the person doing the hiring (what would make you want to hire a freelancer?), your thoughts on freelancing V's working for yourself and how does an employer send work to you on freelancing sites? Hope the helps, cheers
Hi Chris, we're looking to come to Chiang Mai for 5 weeks from 20th Feb how would we look at finding an apartment. I've been told to avoid premium rates on airbnb but nobody told me how else to find one. :/
Chris, my daughter and I are planning on moving to Chaing Mai in two more years, when I retire. I have a question about the apartments. Do you know if any of them allow pets? My daughter has a tiny little teacup chihuahua that weighs about three pounds, that she cannot part with. I would appreciate any information that you could give me on this, thank you, so much. We love your videos and have fallen in love with Chaing Mai because of them.
Thank you for getting back to me, it was very kind of you. We are going to bring the dog with us when we come but we may end up getting a house. Anyway, we can't wait to get there, thanks again.
Damn that had to suck being locked out on day1. Quick question.... How many sets of keys did they give you guys? Do these apartments in Chiang Mai typically give out multiple sets or just one and you have to pay for an extra set\ fob or something? Thanks Chris..
Hi Chris, I'm returning to Chiangmai soon too and wondering if you have come across ANY condos in the Nimman/Chang Phueak area that allow pets besides Flora House? I am desperately looking. Any leads, please let me know!
Thanks for this vidéo. I watch your channel since around 6 months now, and yours vidéos made me come to chiang mai for nearly two months (first December to the 18th of january). Unfortunately, you weren't in chiang mai at theses dates. During my stay in chiang I learned web development (React, React native and node JS), and I am now looking for jobs on Upwork. For the first week I have found 2 jobs, but there weren't well payed. You are now working online since a year, can you share your update feedback to found clients online ? Note : If you want a cheap an very nice place for working, you can try "coworking café", on the north , next to the river. You need a motobike to go there, but the place is very quiet and you can stay the full day and just buy a meal at 60bath.
is that play condo? i remember the pool with a great view. i had a look around but thought the rooms were small and they only had a 2nd floor available that was overlooked by the very close building next door.
The wifi at Camp is pretty good then I guess? You uploading videos there? Maybe I should get an AIS sim, since I'm near Maya. My apartment's wifi sucks. Using a True sim right now. Any recommendations for similar places for other networks?
Your place looks really familiar, I'm staying at the Fountain (another Palm Springs building), will be interesting to see what my electric bill will be after the first month. Depending on how that turns out I may start working at Maya too :)
Hey Chris Huge fan Also from Brisbane Love to see process of getting gigs as a web developer/ Is Upwork the go? Should I have reserves for the 3 months at least? I'm 54 but 40 in temperament. Celebrate you kids having so much fun! would love to see how one has to hustle to get work that pays enough :)
If you’re still in Australia, I’d recommend using your location advantage and building a network back home while you still can. UpWork can be tougher to get western rates.
I know well that Camp, on the last floor of the Maya shopping mall. I have never been inside but remember it well because it´s close to the cinemas. Do you need to keep on buying coffees to be able to stay there? How fast is their Wifi?
So just curious, what were you working on that morning for a client, coding? Trying to find my freelance path... seems php/wordpress has the most freelance opportunities.
Hi Chris, great stuff :) if I can advise, you can make video, what in your opinion, is the shortest way to become DN. Currently I'm working as an account executive and I am producing newsletters for foreign companies. I am doing everything remotely except that I need to stay at office from 9 till 6. I have some basic skills in HTML CSS WordPress and photoshop. I am wondering how I can use my skills. Thank you, cheers :)
Little things can be so important. Watching u don your socks was riveting stuff, Chris.....:-)....simply riveting.......isn't smoky season coming up in CM btw, Chris.....bad timing?
Space Hobo smoky season honestly isn't that bad, i wouldn't avoid the place for that reason unless you have severe allergies. and they would want to be severe, i have mild ones and i do need to take antihistamines but it is honestly not that bad
Not gonna lie I want to be a digital nomad. I have coding skills I am fluent in C# and JavaScript but the thing is that I don't know how to monetize my skills.
I work in the Canadian oil industry, i save about 30k Canadian a year (from march to nov) to enjoy my stay in Thailand for the winter. Really wish i could be a digital nomad.
Love your channel! You inspired me to get back into webdev. If you are looking for not expensive, but cool city with fast internet in europe, definetely consider Riga. Let me know if you have any questions about it! :)
Can you send me the links of two things where I can buy those two things. One is laptop portable stand & 2nd is what was behind at your laptop to lock purpose.
Think you might weigh in on some of the recent Reddit threads and RU-vid videos calling out the scammy/pyramid scheme side of the CM DN scene? Maybe get your take on whether and how the vibe has changed in the last few months?
Hi, I am in an electric wheelchair an was thanking of visiting chiang mai;can you tell me if I would be able to get into the restaurants? It looks like the majority of places have steps in front of them...............Thanks
Not sure to be honest. Maybe watch this interview that my friend Riley did, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EAVImRYbLjQ.html you might find some insights there
Hi, thanks for the web link, but the gentleman did not talk about if chiang mia is accessible, but I am glad he is living his dreams. I am staying in medellin colombia right now; there are quite a few digital nomads here. I am a stock broker just starting to do some traveling. I have plans to go to singapore, KL , BKK, phuke an manila this fall ,but I also want to check out chiang mai. to see if any of those cities are better for me to live. Oh, my friend has a great blog www.medellinliving.com if you ever need info on this city..............happy travels
Chris the Freelancer Alright! It's just: vtrep.com/audio-is-more-important-than-video-picture-quality/ Maybe there is also something you can do software wise to make it better. I just always realize it especially when I am watching your videos with headphones!
Chris the Freelancer but there are plenty ladies out there doing cool nomaddy things. I just started in Jan (currently in Bali) and would love to hear from other women via your vlog.
Can u tell us more about clients , how they pay to u n how u get them ? Ohh ya should have personal website? Guys if give likes if u r interesting in that questions let him see it
Hey, Chris I'm Kunal from India. I just got a job as web developer in indian local IT company but I want to be a digital nomad just like you. Please help me out to be a digital nomad.
Fantastic to see. Very informative videos, especially after living in CM for about 4 years. But where were you when I needed you 6-7 years ago, huh Punk ! You could have saved me a lot of money!! You should actually pay me, for not being around. Yes, that would be fair and the most noble thing to do. So let me know what currency you wish to endorse me in (all crypto accepted) of course cash in hand will be an option as well. So now we have come to an agreement, let me know when you got my money. LOL Anywho, awesome to get a trip down memory lane, not a whole lot of loi Kroh or any of the fish bowls, but that's OK, I'm sure you can make up for that (preferably that you do a bit of hidden camera footage at spotlight and foxy lady) Or again, back to some cash compensation (crypto accepted). Places i would love to see again is Ngat damm, Huey tung Thao Lake and of course the fantastic 3 bars (boy blues bar, C.U corner Bar and Maxim Bar). I stayed my first year at Smith's recidence in Haya area (the old one) which was a complete rip-off, but compared to Europe, I didn't really care due to it was pretty much everything I needed. You're pretty much bang on, whit everything you show on the videos. Thanks
Best conditions for location independent life. - low cost of living - great access to high speed internet - small enough city to easily get around but big enough to get everything you need
All those conditions are also true for other asian cities, eastern european cities and central and south american cities. So just those things don't really explain the obsession.
Sayuas it's cheaper than Eastern Europe and the weather is a lot better. "Great access to high speed internet" is far from a universal in "Asian cities" if you are talking about developing ones which are inexpensive. I've been to every country in ASEAN and and 20 overall in Asia and most do not have the quality of internet Thailand does. China is censored. Myanmar and Laos it is terrible. Philippines is pretty bad. Malaysia is surprisingly bad given the development level. Singapore obviously is great but that's an expensive developed country, one of the most expensive in the world. So what does that leave? I'd say you are looking at Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia, all of which do have pretty good comms infrastructure. Cambodia though is a bit of a kip with much less developed infrastructure, lovely country and i have spent a lot of time there but for work you are going to have to deal with stuff like blackouts you just don't in most of Thailand. it is also much worse for petty crime and stuff like traffic, not so much i would say don't go at all, it is not south america levels of crime but you are at higher risk of having your laptop swiped (and i have, personally, had a LOT of stuff stolen, in lots of seperate incidences in cambodia) Thailand is remarkably honest and safe in that regard. so that leaves you with vietnam and indonesia and well they are nomad hotspots already. south america then you have the crime levels, transportation difficulties. sea you can get anywhere on air asia, not true in south america. have you actually been to chiang mai? it genuinely does have a lot going for it, i have been all over asia but i came back here as it ticked all the boxes.
@blorg I have traveled a lot in South America and you are completely exaggerating the crime in those countries. Yes, some countries do have crime problems like Brazil, Venezuela and maybe Bolivia but there are also ones where you will probably never be confronted with it. Also the climate is quite nice in a lot of southern countries of eastern europe and 100 mbit internet connections are easily available and cheap.
