after two years in China I had to come back to my usual residence in Europe last year, now I feel like a foreigner in my own land and I can only think of moving back to China and stay forever. That country gives you feelings that you can't get elsewhere...
Had no idea Shanghai is so beautiful and futuristic! Yeah it's pretty awesome! I always figured I'd go to ancient spots like Suzhou and Xian if I went to China but you made me realize I can't pass up Shanghai. Thanks for sharing!
I am a native Shanghainese and went back there last month after 5 years in the States. The overhaul of the entire city is simply unbelievable. Too many roads and buildings I did not recognize. Thank you for your video! I can't be prouder of my city.
Nice video again. I remember watching your previous Fudan University video because I spent last summer studying Chinese there as well. Shanghai is truly an amazing city, and it's always nice to see videos of the city. What I found very amazing was just walking around and stumbling upon restaurants or malls. Look forward to the future videos!
I went to Shanghai last September and it was very hot! But somehow i fell in love with the city especially The Bund and Xintiandi because its like you're in both the past and the present with all the colonial architectures and modern buildings. You should visit 1933 Slaughterhouse if you didn't because i love how the building looked so battered but at the same time gives it an artsy vibe. I'm visiting again this December to experience the winter in Shanghai.
Hi, Shanghai now is in the rain season. So, you just saw the dark cloud instead of pollution. Actually, the air quality is very good in the last month.
I went China 2 years ago and I was surprised. I thought China was a country full of dirty and mess few years ago but now I'm planning to move China with my family. People really need to go visit China because China is just totally different with our imagination.
I'm gonna go for a 6 months exchange program in Shanghai in less than 2 months and your video really hypes me up ! I love your accent and smile, keep doing these ! Bisous bisous.
Haha, I still remember you as 'The Twirler At The Bund'! :D This first video feels like a lovely gentle re-introduction to a hectic city. Looking forward to seeing more of Shanghai and how you feel about the city this time round.
Hey..!! I had recently traveled to Shanghai. Looking at your video I was overwhelmed. Felt like going back again. Shanghai is truly an amazing marvelous city.. thanks for your video
btw, i watched the travel video a japanese man with his family in shanghai on the public bus. bring back many happy moments for those who had a wonderful times living there. the people of shanghai is so welcoming to foreigners (maybe due to their colonial past experiences dealing with foreigners) and memories with good friends there. there is so much thing i like to talk about shanghai.
I had same experience. I was studying in Barcelona 3 years ago, it took me 2 years to come back to Barcelona again for visiting last year. I went there alone as well, everything is same and exciting.
and don't worry about trying all the different kind of Chinese foods...it's ok, Chinese stick to Chinese foods as well when they are abroad. I also stick to the same stuffs in shanghai...fried eel noodle, stuffed dumpling and fried rice...that's all about it...haha wonderful city.
As a native speaker, I think you speak Mandarin quite good. I was born in Shanghai so I am so proud of it. Nice introductions and waiting forward to see your other vlog.
Jie Peng His English is sufficient for basic communication, I have no problem understandimg him, and l assume most people don't care about his grammar errors.
Jie Peng 老弟 這麼講究英語語法的你 一定沒有機會在國外生活過吧?頓時覺得你很可憐了 So what? Why do u care? This is RU-vid not one of your English teaching classes in China to show off ur English skills. As long as ppl understand, it’s fine. Feel sad about u😂😂😂
I'm from Shanghai originally. I highly recommend you to try some small restaurants located not in popular tourist destinations like Yu Garden or the Bund because snacks and cuisine in those restaurants around famous landmarks are not that authentic. And they are way more expensive than any authentic restaurants elsewhere. So far as I know, literally no or few locals would eat there. Trust me, those small restaurants will surprise you even if you are on a tight budget. Peace!
to use WIFI you need Chinese ID or sometimes WeChat. Just ask the information counter. I learned that this summer in China. China is changing so fast..
alanOHALAN yes , China is changing so fast , especially People in China adapt new things really fast and internet grows so fast . I visit China once 2 years , and I’m always shocked by something news in China . Comparing to US , China has huge Changed by wechat and others apps like di di or Mei Tuan eat . And now , even food seller or old aunts selling vegetables on the street accept wechat pay . Look US , it just grows so slow ... I feel nothing change since I came ... 13 years already ......
yeah most their free wifi need a Chinese phone number or something else but always could find help at the information counter, I don't feel Shanghai is a good city to live, I mean it's too crowed and noisy, next time try some small city it's gonna be a new experience.
to get wifi in airports, there are two ways. First, receive a text with a code to authenticate yourself and login. Second, go to a machine to scan your passport and get a code from the machine to login.
wait a minute...that's also my favourite place in the entire world! haha....pretty nice city to live in...but cost of living have skyrocketed since first there in 1997...that time, the bund still have plenty of muddy pads...really miss going back there...not been there 5 years...and the food!
I visited China 3 years ago and I loved it! Shanghai and Beijing only but it was awesome! The food was delicious, I'd love to go back and visit more cities!
I went there first time in January 10th 2008, this year I was there for my forth time on January 10th, 10 years definitely lots of good memories and nostalgic , I love this city my favourite it has an special meaning for me.
I came across this video in my recommended videos and I’m so glad I did!! I’m moving to Shanghai in less than a month to attend Shanghai University and I’ve never been before so I’m sort of panicking but seeing your video makes me able to visualize what I’ll be doing when I’m there so it’s less frightening and more exciting!!
Well I'd like to recommend a few apps that everyone in china use every day. First one is taobao, maybe u've heard about it before. In China, basically u can buy all the things u need via this app. Normally u can get ur packages within at most 2-3 days. Another is called wechat, u could download an english version in the app store. It is similar to facebook, people use it to have a chat/make a video call with others and share their life in the friend zone, but u could also order food delivery, buy exhibitions/movie tickets on wechat and even train/bus/flight tickets are available(those things that mentioned above can also be purchased via taobao by a relatively lower price). Btw, to add a friend, simply just to scan their QR code:) Oh and actually we barely use cash in china rn, so u don't have to carry ur wallet all the time. The only things u need to bring wiz u is ur phone. Basically people now mainly use wechat/alipay to trade wiz others in anyplace anytime. So Wherever u go, supermarket, department stores, restaurants, railway station etc, u may complete ur payment using any of these 2 apps through QR code(remember to connect ur chinese bank card before use:). Btw if u wanna go somewhere else in shanghai by taking a public transport, I'll recommend to buy a transport card. U can top up the card at any service center in underground station . Or alternatively, to use alipay and scan as u get on a bus/ in the subway (but i think the operation is a little more complicated than just scanning the card) Ohhhh There are just too many things i wanna share wiz u!!! Anyway, wish u very best luck in ur future and uni:) hope u enjoy ur new life in shanghai!!!
Yep 20 years ago only the Pearl Tower was there. It finished construction in 1994. I was born in 1991 and lived next to the bund as a child, so I still have some fuzzy memory of the unfinished tower :P
so cool. I'm visiting China by myself too in Sept. as a chinese american who never been there! I can't wait. God i hope they don't frown at me when i can't speak chinese that well even though i look chinese
Great video! Love your smile and your enthusiasm! Side note, I watched your Q&A video where you mentioned that you are Russian and have lived in Israel. So is English your native language and did you learn it in Israel? Because you don't have a Russian accent and it's pretty impressive for someone to not come from an English speaking country and speak English as well as you do.
Thanks for watching! Yes, I am Russian and I grew up in Israel, and honestly I just watched a lot of TV as a kid and that's how I got my accent haha actually, my English is a lot better than my Russian. I can understand everything in Russian but it's harder for me to express myself and I don't have a proper accent.
Great video ! I too love Shanghai and have been there twice I do have two lady friends that live there which helps seeing places fun and can visit unique places off the tourist trap.
Great video. I was there in April this year and didn’t see this finger print machine at customs then either. I have been there five times and enjoyed it every time
i was working at the Shanghai Centre, it is stunning when u look down from the roof, IFC Basement 1 Or Zhengda B 1 has soooo many great foods u can try it.
with regard to your bubbling drink. it reminds me of the famous taiwan bubble/milk tea drink that i had in taipei a few years ago. i could not finish the drink, put in the fridge. the next morning, the tea turned murky brownish color !!! ever since, i think i had this bubble tea drink no more than 4 times and each time it was ordered by someone else and gave it to me. your bubbling drink could have some kind of chemicals in it also.
lol great video, very detail talking about Shanghai Pudong airport to the city ,and I am sure that machine is new because last time in Dec 2017 I pass there they don't have this machine, for that smkoe drink it's Sour plum soup, and I guess in the drink bottom is dry ice,but I suggest just don't buy something in the nanjingdong road because everything just too expensive in there.like your videos and cute accent:)
Amazing scenery of that Shanghai skyline! Especially the nighttime view of it. I wish I was rich enough to visit that city, but I'd likely need a Chinese friend with me, and I don't have one since I only live around African-Americans. Thanks 4 posting this video though. If I never get to travel to Shanghai at least I have an idea of what it looks like in more detail.
