WHEN MUSTARD was one of the main crops in East Anglia, it was cut by hand with scythes, in the same way as corn. The crop could grow up to six feet high and this was very arduous work, requiring extremely sharp tools. When blunt they "would not cut the mustard".
It comes from the military and means "to pass inspection." If you join the military, you muster in and when you leave, you muster out. A muster also refers to lining up for a formal military inspection, the goal of which is to pass muster. In the civilian world, if you pass muster, you meet a required standard.
We have wild mustard growing all over the place here in Southern CA and I can attest to the size or the plant. Also, the greens are quite nutritious. (and bitter!)

Why "cut the mustard"? You think of mustard as a product you buy in the store, usually yellow, that comes in a plastic squeeze bottle. Mustard comes from a plant, that has to be cut with very sharp implements, used to be a scythe. If you've ever seen a mustard plant, you would know the stalk is very thick and woody when the flowers have made mustard seeds. If you couldn't cut mustard, you were dull.

VM is right, in the 70's they had 7-8 or 8-9 Jr. High. In my school, the Jr. and Sr. High were in the same building. They discovered from experience, it's not a good idea to have 18-19 year-olds in the same building with 12-13 year-olds. Separating the ages resulted in a lot fewer teenage pregnancies.

Upon hearing about EJ’s Apple savings account, I paused the video, applied and was approved for an Apple Card and set up and funded the savings account. Used to launch out of wild wings marina early and then ashtabula late perch there to twice year limit out every time with my guests and the captains as well 7 years straight 22 to 28 inches best tasting ones
I'm right here on the lake in Cleveland. We go out on my dad's boat and CRUSH the walleye. We have several Fish Ohio catches, and my pops hits the tournaments hard. All of our freezers are packed full of walleye...like a ridiculous amount.

I wanted to add to your conversation. It brought back a memory. I went to a school that had Kindergarten through 12th grade in one building. (5 year olds to 18 years olds.) I remember being in high school listening to the younger kids outside playing on the swings during recess and chasing each other around on the playground.
I literally laughed my ass off when Matt was talking about getting bitten the nipple by a fish. Did anybody notice that he dropped an F bomb and they didn’t even bleep it out? lol
