How hard is the bottom? How much weight do you think that the bottom supports?

It’s fairly hard. Weight probably depends on how much of a span you have. Our 3 dogs are combined maybe 60 lbs with no problem.

When the dog seat is split, is there any way to add a "wall" to the open side? With zippers or velcro?

I split it and faced the open side towards the door. But you could probably put one on top of the other to make it 4 walls shorter.
