Live from the Cakewalk booth in the Roland arena, take a look inside the perfect computer workstation for SONAR as HP's Dan Bennett opens up and tears down the monster Z800 workstation.
I have built a few systems from the ground up in the past but that HP case and the ease of component access looks like the best I have ever seen anywhere. Great video.
ahhh i thought one of these big car companies like audi or bmw did the design for them. When i first opened the case it immediately reminded me of a car engine with all that covering. Somehow pretty cool!
Very elegant. I was pleasantly surprised. My only concern (besides how much it probably retails for) was that such a modular design wouldn't afford the freedom to use components of one's choosing. For example: needing to replace the power supply but being locked in with HP's proprietary offerings. Also, I know this was at NAMM, but some lab-controlled (or even approximate) temps and respective dB readings under load would have been most welcome. Great demo. Hope to see more from Dan Bennett.
dude do you know what the part number is for the 24 pin to 18 pin adapter power cable with molex and serial connectors on it?, I have the 14 pin to motherboard 6 and 8 pin cpu and memory power cable. I need a replacement one for a customers z600, whose girlfriend got pissed at him and took a pair of side cutters and really messed up the psu cable in the backplane.
I am really starting to think about not ever working on hp ever again, their finished units are really nice but trying to find parts and or part numbers is harder than pulling teeth. hp really isn't a customer friendly company!
While this workstation looks sexy at first glance, you realize as an experienced computer tech, what a horrid design is. (a) Those plastic insulating panels need to be left off, or discarded. All they do is trap heat and block access to the system. You always leave your side panel off. I don't care what any idiot tells you... they do not facilitate air moving through the system. (b) That power suppy is NOT a standard form factor ATX power supply. In fact, its a big WHAT THE FUCK! for a computer tech to find. Connections to it are non standard. Try wiring up a standard ATX power supply to that bitch, in 10 years, reading the schematics. (c) about the only thing I like about this design, are the handles at the top, but that can be added to any PC case with a $2 Home Depot handle on the top middle (and I do). This setup requires two hands to carry (bad).
