Back to Angola | The "Road of Death" - from Menongue to Cuito. 

I was there in early 1988, when 32 Battalion was positioned at the road between Menongue and Quito. FAPLA supply convoys travelled along this road to Quito. The SADF wanted to stop the FAPLA supplies of food, fuel and weapons to Quito. 32 Battalion recces along the route would alert the SADF of a FAPLA supply convoy. A Mirage or two would flew up from Namibia at tree top height in a river valley, pitch up and toss a bomb onto the front of a convoy. Once the FAPLA convoy grinded to a halt, 32 battalion would set up its Valkiri MRLs and rain down hundreds of rockets on the convoys. They also rained truckloads of 120mm mortars onto the convoys. Hundreds of vehicles were destroyed. Hundreds more were damaged. Many lost their lives on the Road of Death. For the FAPLA viewpoint, look at the YT video Road to Cuito Cuanavale: Hac Tam....
