I feel like Selena was one of the only movies to get the balance right. Even at the end the seeing the impact of her death and the void she left in the world. Wow. Still cry to it to this day. I hoped to see that in this movie and yes the actors were great but the story was so boring and 1 note and she was anything but.
I just watched the movie and I agree with your review. I do think it was rather slow/ boring and lacking drama/excitement. She was so hugely popular and like you said the move made her almost seem like the girl next door even at the height of her fame. I wish they would have at least used her vocals. The movie was about Amy and we didn’t even get to hear her vocals. The actress was good but incomparable to Amy. So to me that was disappointing..I definitely feel it could have been better….

Excellent review and your opening statement is 💯 correct, it's important to keep keep a balanced unbiased pov but not everyone can do that. Fantastic review, now have you watched Asif Kapadia's film AMY?
Agree with most of what you said in particular your opening preamble. I've seen 1 star reviews with a 1 liner statement saying they don't like the director or they didn't agree with the historical accuracy🤦♂️. If you base your review on the latter then Braveheart is one of the worst films of all time! I thought it was more flat in places than boring but I can see where you're coming from. I'd rate it slightly higher (around the 6 mark) as I thought Marisa Abela, Jack O'Connell and Lesley Manville all did a great job. Some really unexpected eyecatching and picturesque shots too.
It's always going to be biased if someone is a fan of anything really. However, something to appreciate from a fan is that they have a cursory knowledge of the subject in particular versus someone whose interest was never there. I guess what I'm saying is that it's not a bad thing to be more in sync with what you're consuming, literally and figuratively, because you're more invested in the content. And to them, as you mentioned, they're going to be judging something with a completely different set of expectations. That's also not bad, it just depends on your expectations, if you had any, and splitting the difference. Listening to your review, which I appreciate, even aligns with what fans of hers who share similar sentiments, such as the copy and pasting of scenes with no real focus on anything in particular and how flat it fell. I, myself, have been a fan of hers going on four years and manage a few online groups, so I got to see shots of the film from its early production days, which looked forced, cheesy, and to punctuate her trauma over the complexity of Amy as a human being. It didn't impress me, and the trailer reinforced why. Just rampant banality and a glorification of her pain.
