I homeschooled our daughter through the third grade. I taught her Bible, how to read, how to write and basic math. These are the primary skills they need. When I look at what kind of mother I have been, I have at least taught her these skills. Keep up the great work Erin and Chad. You have raised some very good children who are loving. Looking forward to see the new little man in your family. ❤

We love abeka for the younger years as well!! They have such a solid phonics program. In 3rd grade, we move on to saxon with Nicole the math lady and TGATB for language. As for math facts, writing them 3x per day does the trick! My husband is amazing at math, and he said it is all thanks to his 3rd grade teacher who made them write their multiplication tables over and over.

We have gone back and forth with Saxon over the last several years and I have also found that we prefer to start it in 3rd grade (using Intermediate 3 and then moving onto 5/4). However, we are using My Math Assistant instead of Nicole The Math Lady at this point. I only wish that I loved all of the Saxon Math levels because we are part of a cottage school that has chosen Saxon, but unfortunately, Saxon 1 and 2 just aren't our favorites. Instead, we have fallen completely in love with Math With Confidence for those early grades and I have been using MWC as our primary math for my first grader and treating the workbook pages from Saxon 1 that she has to complete as more of a supplement, especially since she can fly through a lesson in about 2 minutes or less.

As a fellow Homeschool mom I love this! I can highly recommend Master Books if you are looking for something to try! We love them so much. Biblically bases and solid curriculum. We especially have loved their science and history. I used to use Abeka and even taught private school with Abeka, they are great, but they were not a fit at all for my family.

We had a season of life where we needed to slow down and take a relaxed approach to our homeschool and we found Masterbooks to be the perfect fit. I was able to have the kids come to my bed (during a rough patch in my last pregnancy) and we could read through the lessons and do the work right there. We even used My Story 1 with my 2nd, K and Pre-K kids all together and it was wonderful. After that school year we did end up deciding that we wanted a more traditional classical program so we ended up moving on to Memoria Press, Saxon and Math With Confidence which have all been fantastic for us. I am hoping to add Living Art Lessons this year and have had my eye on Where Faith Grows ever since it came out. I thought it looked like it was very well done.

We love the Good and the Beautiful! They have such a strong language arts curriculum. Also, people like to say it’s a “Mormon based” curriculum. They’ve done multiple videos acknowledging this claim and how they use people of many different Christian denominations to create the curriculum and check it to ensure that it’s a non denominational Christian curriculum and nothing more. So don’t let that scare you away because it’s affordable and amazing!

I studied Abeka curriculum at a Christian school from 5th-12th grades. I later taught Abeka curriculum to 3rd & 4th graders while my son was also taught from the same curriculum kindergarten-4th grade. I think it is an amazing foundation! Love ABEKA Phonics....pairs well with the activities and songs from Sing, Spell, and Write. Love ABEKA Arithmetic through 5th grade...in sixth grade I switched my girls to Saxon Math 7/6 and they were able to enter that curriculum seamlessly, skip Pre-Algebra and go right into High School. I did use an alternative Geometry however. Was eclectic with History and used Apologia Science in middle school throughout H.S. Notgrass History is really greatly! My girls have both been to college and both have done great. Relax Mamas. Be diligent and Trust the Lord with your children. He is so faithful!!!

We've been homeschooling for 10 years now and love it! My go to and absolutely most loved curriculum is Christian Light Education for math, language arts, and reading! I can't praise it enough! We have also used Writing & Rhetoric through Classical Academic Press. I also can't praise that enough! We have used a ton of different things for social studies and science. Those two subjects were very hands on, unit studies, enrichment classes through our HSAP program, lots of books and experiements. We've done different online classes through the years - an 8 week "how to write a paragragh" class, science classes about a specific topic, the fun math/language courses like time4learning or abc mouse where you can pick and choose from almost every topic, and BJU Heritage Studies in 3rd grade with combined history and science. We love the Liberty Kids dvds for history and the What's in the Bible with Buck Denver dvds for Bible.

All of my home school Mom friends really honed in on each individual child once they were in grade 5/6ish to figure out their strengths, so by the time they were 14 or so, if they excelled or were more interested in one thing or another, then they registered them in high school for those particular subjects. Even P.E. for those kids more athletically active. It was a perfect balance. Some kids WANT more history, or chemistry, or Biology. We're raising future doctors, nurses, engineers, and yes, teachers. Its important to be progressive as they get older and make sure theyre prepared acedemically in case they ARE gifted and ask about a particular college going into a specific profession!
@athomewiththedavises3457
@athomewiththedavises3457 Год назад
So true! Although, I would disagree that public school courses are at all academically superior to the home school courses available today. Or that they are remotely necessary to prepare students academically for any professional career path. Homeschoolers are not limited in their career choices in any way. Ironically, it was the public school system that was created specifically as a way to train children for the sole purpose of being factory workers. By controlling and limiting what children were taught, they could limit their opportunities, ensuring that wealthy factory owners would have access to a steady stream of cheap labor. So if anything, I would think that homeschooling offers substantially more time and opportunity to focus on developing talents and taking specialized classes.

@athomewiththedavises3457 hmmm...you must be talking about your country then because that is SO not the case where my kids learnt here in Western Canada. @mollyb4541
@mollyb4541 Год назад
@@jaymie-lee- one can attend a public school and can be raised with the lord. My husband is a good example. He was on high honor roll, got his bachelors and MBA as a computer engineer. He never has to tell anyone he’s a Christian because his actions speak. I believe both home school and public schools have strengths and weaknesses like most things in life. There are many successful individuals that have been home schooled and went to public schools. It’s what works best for one’s family. I too went to public schools and was raised with the lord 🙏🏼
@crystalsnow1138
@crystalsnow1138 Год назад
@@mollyb4541 True but at the same so many public schools are teaching things to kids that aren't in line with the Christian faith. For example a child can identify as the opposite gender and if you do not address the child by their gender identity you can be suspended or possibly expelled, same applies to teachers who identify as a different gender. They are also promoting pro LGBTQ plus ideologies to children. I went to a Catholic school growing up but I always wanted to be homeschooled, there was so much time during the day at school that I just felt like a waste of time. When you homeschool you have complete control of what your child is learning and the type of people they are surrounded by. Like yes there are plenty of Christians who go to public school but there are also plenty who don't follow a religion or believe in God. Plus homeschooling keeps the family closer. When you homeschool there is more free time for the family to spend time together. And it's a more flexible schedule.
@jillanglemyer3168
@jillanglemyer3168 Год назад
@@mollyb4541, it can be done but it’s getting more difficult. You have to “unteach” a lot of the indoctrination. I really liked spending the time with my kids. The time with them went so fast. They are all successful.

Love A Beka for phonics. Mom of nine and have been homeschooling for 18 years. We gravitated towards a gentle Charlotte Mason focus on learning, heavy literature and a self-propelled education. I always tell my kiddos that I won’t be able to teach them everything, but they know our large, classical family library well and can find answers to questions/research quickly and efficiently. After 5 kiddos, my philosophy became very self-propelled as far as learning and my kiddos love it! Many blessings Paine family! You’re doing a great job!!

There is a way to do the 9 times table using your hands... It's so easy you put your thumb on the left hand and that gives you 1x9. Then put your index finger down ( withe the thumb back up) and that gives you 2x9. Then you just continue going through each digit and it takes you up to 10x9. The left hand indicates the tens (10-90) and those remaining on the right is the units (1-9) . I hope this helps 😊

I had my first two children at the ages of 18 & 20. I had a surprise miracle baby at the age of 30 after having cancer twice and by the time he went into school they had stopped teaching cursive writing. I taught him that at home until the age of 17. To this day (he is now 31) and he gets compliments all the time about his writing. I hope God continues to bless you & your family in every way!

Hi Erin! Thank you so much for sharing this with us! Seeing the way other families homeschool is so helpful. I had one idea for a vlog if you would consider it. Could you share if you have a behavior chart or behavior management system you follow? Any books you recommend on how to help children learn obedience and also foster joy in doing the right thing? I just thought it would be so helpful to hear what you & Chad have found worked well for your family. 🙂

Love seeing what you are using this year. I have been homeschooling for 11 years now and things have changed so much over the years. We also do family style lessons for Science and History. It saves so much time and it's such great family time to have together. I have heard such great things about Our Star-Spangled Story, we have been doing their Our 50 Stages curriculum and I LOVE them. It makes us feel like we are traveling to each state each time we do the lessons.

Thank you so much for explaining what works for your family!! We started Abeka's k3 with our little one this year just to start really basically introducing letters and numbers to 15 and Bible. Just 30 minutes or so per day. I would love to know how you juggle your school time with younger ones who are not in school yet. What do they do while you are doing school to keep them from distracting? Next year I'll have a k4 and a 1 year old who is very active already. 😂

Great video, thank you for sharing! It looks like you use more of a traditional approach and it works well for you. I have heard a lot of good things about the Lamplighters books, I might need to pick up a few of those.I also use Notgrass History with my son and we are liking it, however I am also drawn to the Charlotte Mason approach (using living books) and I get inspiration from companies like Simply Charlotte Mason, Sonlight, My Father’s World, and Heart of Dakota. They are all Christian companies and they are a good place to look if you were ever interested in that approach. Hope you have a great school year!

Erin, we use BJU too and if you pay for the Science DVDs, the Heritage studies ones are included in the bundle. You can get two courses for the price of one since they are semester courses. BJU does have some sale and discounts if you buy through a consultant in the future. Blessings! Love hearing about your family. ♥

For Languages Arts, we use Michael Clay Thompson from Royal Fireworks Press. My kids love the Poodle series. History and Bible we do Veritas Press Self Paced online courses; we love that both courses start from creation and move through chronologically from there. Science we use "Science in the..." by Jay Wile and love the short easy lessons with expirements. We also do the lapbook with Science. Math we use Math in Focus older version. We have also used Abeka phonics and Veritas Press readers and worksheets for K-1 to help supplement and begin their reading/phonics. Kids enjoyed Fix It Grammar as well by IEW. We piece it all together and pivot when one kid struggles with an area. Thanks for sharing about Lamplighter and Notgrass, I've looked at both but hadn't heard a person review about them. God bless you and your family!

I am so glad for all the homeschooling families and the hard work and time it takes. I lived In Guadalajara Mexico for 3 years and for a portion of it I taught 3rd grade to a classroom of missionaries children. It was an honor. I am completely mortified about public education now and it breaks my heart that they have to go there.

Thank you so much for sharing! We use all of The Good and the Beautiful but I’ve been looking for Bible and History so I’m going to take you up on your suggestions. Could you do a video on how you discipline your children and chores that they do? They are so well behaved and I’m needing some inspiration for my rowdy 3 year old. Also, could you do a bluegrass and hymn cd recommendation video? I love your bluegrass songs in your videos but I have the hardest time finding similar ones when I look them up. Thank you so much for all the work you put into these videos. You’re such an inspiration to me!

Do you cover any geography or does that come later in the curriculum? In the U.K. the humanities and science tend to be topic based in schools for the youngest ones but they still learn about weather and the water cycle, and the differences between settlement sizes and the names of physical features such as mountains and rivers etc.

When I was in public school in the 1970s, we started out with manuscript and began cursive in third grade. In general, I think it's better to wait. Kids in the earlier grades can get confused if the letters/words they are learning to write don't look like the printed material in the books they are reading. There's also the hand-eye coordination issue.

I am a primary school teacher in Ireland. We teach phonics using 'jolly phonics' from Year 1 through to Year 2 which is amazing. They have a song for each sound, which are all on youtube if you listen to them - super catchy. They have so many activities too. Younger children absolutely love it. Not sure if it's in America though :)
