Cindy: She made several million with her Pepsi deal! She made big money with her Revlon deal! Cindy was never as popular on the runaways as Yasmeen Ghauri, Veronica Webb or Christy Turlington! Cindy was a marketing tool. She is a great speaker! Oprah Winfrey did interviews with her! This is when she was starting out as a runaway and print model! Cindy was never conceited as the big names ( Yasmeen Ghauri, Veronica Webb and Christy Turlington/ all three were spoiled by the top designers)! Big companies used her to sell products! She married a guy ( Rande Gerber) who did nightspots in California! Her marriage to Richard Gere was short. Two kids with Rande Gerber!

I was just thinking this same thing. She looked kind of bland on the runway but she was so beautiful and photographed so well and so it made her a successful model commercially.

Cindy always had that stunning body, when she was young! I loved the boyish shoulders and her tomboy ways! It is sexy to see a woman, who is not always so soft and feminine, but who.looks a little rouge/ LMAO!

She could do all the moves required of 90s models - the smooth turns, the little kick of the foot at the end of a turn, the confident stance and expression, etc. She had a relaxed way of moving, as Sorek already wrote here.. I agree here in the USA her beauty was much more attainable hence relatable. She was definitely a coin magnet early in her career..she certainly didnt need the "walk" to survive nor did the catwalk fees compare to the $$ print cosmetic campaigns were paying Models. Cindy Linda Claudia Christy and Karen were light years ahead of Naomi the "queen" of the Catwalk in (Coin) for sure. It's sad folk don't realize the money and instant branding was off the Catwalk and when Cindy realized her Brand could be so much more her focus obviously went elsewhere too. She also became a role model for Models with personal banding. Ive heard Tyra banks for example, reference Cindy early as a role model for personal branding off the runway. Cindy is the true Icon periodT.

I absolutely concur. She was definitely not suited for runway and dare I say it, a different body shape than the others (nothing wrong just it's there). She is so gorgeous and so suited for print and film. I LOVE her workouts. Linda has always been my fave as well. She's just "it". That's so true about Cindy...all the boys at school were in love with her. They turned up their noses to the photos in Vogue or Bazaar. Yes, she was definitely accessible...still is :)

Balmain, Hermes, and Escada used her for their ad campaigns. So yes, she was considered high fashion and in-demand in Europe. Linda was the chameleon and Cindy was the most diversified. Cindy was one of the few fashion models who were successful at both prestige work and commercial/mainstream campaigns. She worked for top designers and was also the spokesperson for Revlon, Pepsi, and Omega,. She hosted her fashion-themed show on MTV. She sold her own exercise videos. She was in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue. She even posed for Playboy (which helped her career, though she was warned not to do it by the fashion industry). She expanded what top models could achieve and other models copied her. Claudia later did exercise videos. Christy was a fashion correspondent for Entertainment Tonight. Stephanie Seymour and Elle Macpherson later posed for Playboy. At the height of her career, it was mentioned several times by industry people that she had a broad appeal because she was a brunette who was ethnically ambiguous (a popular trend of the time). In photos, with the right styling and makeup, she could look Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Middle Eastern, South American, etc. Therefore, she seemed relatable to many different people. I was a teenager during Cindy's prime and paid close attention to 90s fashion and models. Unlike some of the opinions I've read here, I'm not basing mine solely on impressions and assumptions of the past.

Cindy Crawford was a tomboy/ LOL! She always said her dad wanted a boy! Her dad used to make her play sports! I could always tell, she was not a Prima Donna like so many of the other beautiful models ( modeling full of spoiled beauties/ Yasmeen Ghauri/ Tyra Banks/ Veronica Webb/ Christy Turlington). Cindy was down to earth and viewed modeling as a business. Her Revlon and Pepsi Money secured the future of her and her two babies! She was not as conceited as many of the top women in the business!

Cindy made her biggest money selling Pepsi ( the weight conscious drank Diet Pepsi)! She also made some "big" money selling Revlon ( she and Veronica Webb) did great work for Revlon. She was great at marketing products! The big names in the top paragraph were more famous for haute couture!

You do know that walking is just one of many categories a super model has to be good at? Yes, her walk seems a bit boring compared to other legendary super models BUT she absolutely excelled in photos, body shape, stunningly beautiful face, interviews, comercials, hosting, intellect and general positive public appearance. There's a reason why the one Pepsi ad is pretty much the most icon ad for a soft drink ever.

Once a model gets a thumbs up by a leading member of the industry, other people hire her. In some early photos, she was styled to look like Gia. The same thing happened with Claudia Schiffer, whose career was greatly helped by her superficial resemblance to Brigitte Bardot. I'm glad Cindy has acknowledged that looking like Gia helped her get her start.

In 1986, Gia was dead and Cindy was entering the big leagues by leaving Chicago and moving to New York City. Cindy had the same dark sultry looks as Gia and the fashion industry wanted more of that. It was a nice contrast to all the blue-eyed blondes dominating the field during the 70s and 80s. She was smart enough to avoid the pitfalls of fame (partying too much, drinking, and drugging). But then, Cindy was emotionally healthy compared to Gia when she entered her cutthroat profession. Fame and wealth can easily intensify the weaknesses you already had when you were anonymous. Cindy was a true professional: always on time, reliable, pleasant to work with, no diva antics. It's no surprise why she had longevity. I do question her stage mother approach to daughter Kaia's career. Is she still seeking the spotlight by pushing Kaia to follow in her footsteps, living vicariously off her daughter's success? With all that Cindy knows about the exploitation, sexual harassment, and eating disorders in the modeling industry, it's disappointing that she seems okay with it. In some ways, modeling is worse now than it was during the supermodel era. Kaia is very thin and she had a healthier appearance before she became a professional model. She lost a lot of weight to get hired and fit the clothes. In Cindy's day, sample sizes were 4-6. Today it's 0-2.
