Earlier this summer, we attended The RPF Prop Party and showcase, a gathering of replica prop builders in southern California to share their projects. One of those projects is a pair of Nike Air Mag shoes from Back to the Future Part II, created by RPF member Brad Fyfe. Brad shows us his shoe conversion project and a pair of official Air Mags that were auctioned off by Nike for charity. Still working on that power lacing!

Super psyched to build these. I bought a pair from Nike in the 2011 auction and they are easily one of my most treasured possesions. In fact I cringe whenever I see Brian Wilson playing baseball in his or Kanye double flairing. Granted, I get it, money is no object for those guys, but for me, Air Mags (certainly ones in such limited supply) are works of art. However, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to be able to wear my Nikes out dancing and such. So, not wanting to wait for the 2015 general power lacing release (which will most likely happen in October), I started looking at all the available Chinese versions and all their cool original colorways. Now that I know there's a vibrant support community for moding them, I'm totally gonna do it. Thanks so much, Tested. You guys are awesome as usual.

Benbot There could be licensing issues with Universal. Wouldn't be surprised if there's some complicated cross-branding legal agreements going on between the two.

someusername121 You are pretty close. Actually since Universal released the "licensed" crappy versions of the MAG's, they subsequently pissed off NIKE. None the less, Nick Fox is correct that they never intended to make a NIKE MAG shoe with self lacing.

If I recall correctly, tear resistance is actually different from the durometer rating, which measures the hardness of the rubber. They're somewhat interrelated, but changing one won't necessarily help worth the other.

So, all in all just get the Chinese knockoff versions, create a mold and use a transparent silicone rubber resin, swap out the LEDs and power it with a piezoelectric transducer into a rechargeable battery small yet efficient enough to take the load of walking/running.

Steven Whiting I think the reason why Norm and Brad refer to the Chinese ones as knock-offs is the apparent lack of care for accuracy, nothing more. I don't think its in their interest to ruin the market, since they want the chinese shoes to be available in the future too, and they have to stay relatively commercially successful for them to be made. For official products, figures etc., it is a difficult balance to strike between production costs and the market demand. Most figures aren't going to be hugely popular in terms of mass-production, so you have to find a balance, which sadly often means exploiting the relative cheap living wages overseas. In the end, as long as the product is good...

kimaboe I Love BTTF and would love a pair of these, but using chinese cheap fakes and then adding a few details to make them screen correct does not make them suddenly a replica. Adam has 1 day builds using bits and bobs to make himself ( Not making and selling to anyone.) Not that i am bothered, they are not reselling en mass or passing them off as original but the clip says chinese fakes and then TA DA, REPLICA.

I said, "I've got time." Actually just looked online, Hallween Costumes has the shoes for about $100 bucks and all the way up to 15. Given I wear a 15 I am actually kinda amped about this. I grew up with BTTF and it would be pretty cool to have a pair of these by 10-24-2015 (The day Doc and Marty traveled to the future.) ... Thanks I think for getting that Typo Equinox. i think I forgot myself there. Too much Temporal mechanics and my brain gets all paradoxy and stuff.
