Been using my iPad Pro M1 for years now and I absolutely love it. It's been my laptop evolution going from an EEE PC in 2009 to an ASUS Transformer in 2013 to a Surface Pro 3 in 2015 and now the iPad Pro. My entire workflow as a musician revolves around the iPad. Genuinely changed my life and career as my first Apple product.

Cool - what’s your workflow? I’m looking at recording on the iPad Pro M1 but unsure which app to use - GarageBand, Cubase etc. Any recommendations? Thanks!

I also use my iPad alot for music. What do you use it for and what apps? I play live and record a bit. I mostly use AUM with Korg, Ravenscroft and Sunrizer. Sometimes Camelot pro for more granularity. For recording Cubasis, sometimes Garageband. I have Logic Pro but I haven't gotten in to using it much yet.

My iPad is a great side kick for my MacBook. I find both useful for different tasks and different environments and love the ability to sidecar and use the iPad as a second monitor on the road. Both are awesome and I will never choose one over the other. To me it's like saying I'm going to choose my hammer over my saw. Different tools for different tasks.

Love my iPad . It suits basically everything I need . I’ve tried a MacBook Air and a HP 2in 1 and basically they just sat there not being used . To me it’s the apps that work with the iPad that is the game changer .its a two in one computer and I wouldn’t change for anything else .

Hi, I had never been to your channel, but guess what, just subscribed! Why?? Cause you are one of the best "natural speakers" out there, for real. You have insane confidence in the manner of talking, and overall speaking demeanor... You are truly gifted, and I'm not surprised Apple invited you over to speak at their events. I guess i stumbled upon your channel as i just bought a used Ipad Pro 12.9" Gen 4th, so was browsing around just to get reacquainted with overall hardware/software. Keep it going! I’m a Primary Teacher and the iPad Pro is a beast in the classroom. It’s my Interactive Whiteboard as well as my laptop. Air Print isn’t perfect, but most copiers have an iOS App anyway. But Laptops really have no place in the classroom when you get your head around iPad OS

I use my iPad Pro M1 11 inch as my main computer. I love it! From batterylife to portability, able to charge it anywhere on a plane for example, the focus you have on it… At home a have a few servers (Ubuntu-server, Windows-server, Home Assistant, Synology NAS) wich I can acces and manage all from the iPad where I am at the world (due my own hosted VPN). With a SSH client on the iPad for example. I do verious things with that, automate tasks with Python scripts running daily, Plex, our central file server, automate our house, etc. All created and managed just from the iPad Pro.

I use my 11” M1 iPad Pro for 99% of my computing needs. I only have one workflow that I have to use my MacBook Pro to complete. I have always thought of the iPad as the evolution of the laptop. As a kid is was into reading Tom Swift and was amazed of the inventions described, I think of the iPad, apple watch as like a Tom Swift computer. I am looking forward to the day the iPad can surpass the need for a laptop or desktop computer.

Everytime great to see your perspective and hear your thoughts on iPad and co. I still use my m1 iPad 12,9 additionally to my MacBook Pro. Especially when travelling it’s great to have a bit more screensize via sidecar. Mails, notes, browsing, banking and checking footage works as well great. And I do plan my videos on it. Oh, and of course web meetings. Overall I cannot complain at all. Have a great week be awesome new year 👍🏻

Your channel got me using a tablet as my only on the go computer. 4+ years later, and I'm still going strong. I still have a m1 Mac mini in my studio but I use my tablet more than my Mac and Smartphone now. Although I'm rocking a galaxy tab S8+ now instead of an iPad. Love Dex Mode and like the Spen a bit more than the Apple pencil. My main use is for journaling via noteshelf annotation and notes for pdfs and some pdf books and highlights when reading instapaper saved articles syncing those highlights to readwise. I also use it for work, productivity, content creation, and a LOT of writing and research. As well as an R&R device. Tablets really have become my favorite tech device category.

Never go back to Mac since and all the ipadOS updates are making iPad better and better, is light weight, charge faster, replace all mywork flow. The only updates I hope now is iPad’s Zoom can select external camera and this will make my work life complete ❤

I'm mainly working with cloud computing. There are some great Kubernetes tools and AWS tools around that make 99%of my work done on ipad - there still left that 1%. And that 1% is helm charts and terraform scripts. Currently there is no possible way to install a new kubernetes helm chart or execute a terraform script than to use your ipad as a terminal to your workstation. Don't get me wrong. I'm '84 and half of my work life was using terminals. But this is sole annoying fact that I need to set up ssh server to run those. But still - hey - I'm on ipad side and it's more convenient to me to set up a jump box and take with me such a small factor device than carrying 2kg laptop while I'm on business travel. I just would like to use helm charts and terraform straight out of ipad. That's all.

I love my M1 iPad Pro. I've had it since its release, but I've never been able to go all-in and use it as my only device. I have a MacStudio at home, and just recently, I picked up an M3 MacBook Pro 14". Surprisingly, I find myself grabbing the MacBook more than the iPad nowadays. I myself am very excited about Vision Pro and plan to dive in with both feet when it's released as well. The only problem with the “no Mac” approach is basically an economical one: for same power, the iPad is much more expensive than a Mac and most apps are either subscriptions or very expensive. So yes, if you can afford it, very good for you. I have both a Mac and an iPad with keyboard and pencil. What makes the difference is that I don’t buy or subscribe to apps on iPad that do not also come with Mac versions.

I think this video is great. Too many times I have heard on RU-vid how you can’t do all the things you’re doing on an iPad. I run a 2018 iPad Pro as kind of a second device. I have an M1 iMac which I don’t really use that often. I tend to use that for very niche tasks or because I want to use the big screen. Hey Chris, My family and I have a went completely IPad only earlier this year with release of IPadOS 17. We have one desk setup with a monitor that has USB keyboard and mouse plugged in, USBC with pass through w/ power delivery charging that we connect to the IPad. When anyone needs a bigger screen we simply plug the USBC into our iPad and everything is just there. We can swap in and out with ease! I have ordered a docking station recently to expand the capability further. Very excited for this setup. Sold my Windows PC that at one time lived at the desk.

The iPad Pro needs Xcode, the fact iPad Pros that have the same power as the Airs with M chips is mind boggling! Xcode is a native app developed by Apple them! Please talk about this more often. Like iPad Pro M2 has 8g ram and can pick the storage, it is just like the Air, a fan less system. If a m1 Mack air can run basic Xcode why cant the m2 or at minimum, the newest m3 2024 iPad PRO should have Xcode. Please bring this to Apples attention and customers so they can bring this over, they just need to tweet it. The Hardware even if it’s slightly under clocked should be able to run it, especially the newest m2 or m3 iPad.

When I worked as a teacher, my iPad (first a 13" Pro with home button, now an 11" 2018 Pro) was my main work device - and I also used it as a whiteboard in class. Now it's a bit more secondary. My Macbook Pro is mostly chilling in clamshell mode in my office, while I use the iPad around the apartment, for light browsing, reading and video. The iPad is also my main academic reading device, with the pencil and Zotero.

I have a 12.9 inch M1 iPad Pro with 2 TB storage. I love the improvement with the iPadOS and stage Manager. But I was hoping for so much more, something closer to the MAC experience when using a Keyboard and Mouse, eternal monitor with command line interface with many open windows, not the current 4 limitation, and actually able to run MAC apps. My iPad is my current daily computer but since I have so many Amateur Radio (WD8OQS ) applications that are windows only, I still need my windows machine. Also developers loath to support iPad fully even if they do have MAC apps they sell in the Apple Store. I feel I’m at the mercy of developers or is it Apple that wants to curtail my computing with the iPad even with the M1 chip, 16 GB RAM and 2 TB storage? Even though finally I have a browser that finally supports desktop web apps, and I can have 4 Apps running that I can see in one stage, I want so much more…….

Just want to start off by saying this isn't meant as hate, I genuinely respect your decision to switch back to the iPad only setup. I've been down that road, diving deep into the iPad lifestyle with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil. My iPad Pro was my main machine for solid three years. Then I switched to the M2 series MacBook and suddenly i’ve started asking why I was doing that. Macs just handle everything so much better. Looking back, the effort I put into making the iPad work seems like it wasn't justified. It's fascinating, yet puzzling to me, why anyone would choose iPad-only now. But hey, to each their own, right? We all have our unique preferences and needs.
@jack_2612
@jack_2612 9 месяцев назад
I totally agree. I've experienced this "I'm doing it for the aesthetics more than because it's actually better" myself. I've used an iPad and then an iPad Pro through my Uni years, but as soon as I got the chance (and by chance I mean money) I bought a MacBook Air and I recently ended up selling my iPad Pro, Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil and buying an M3 Pro MacBook Pro. What amazes me is that a 12.9" iPad Pro with the full setup costs as much as a MacBook Pro refurbished on Apple's web store, so I genuinely can't understand why settling. I get that Chris here did it for the content he creates, it's obviously worth it for him; but anyone else... why? If you truly need a pen and you are not an artist, just get an iPad mini, there is no need to go full-in on an iPad Pro that ends up costing you as much as a top tier laptop. If the price gap had been significant I'd be definitely on board with the iPad Pro lifestyle, but it's not so I'm not.
@jack_2612
@jack_2612 9 месяцев назад
@@MichaelSeneschal that's just not true for this case tho. The only iPad it makes currently sense to bring into a conversation about going iPad instead of MacBook is the 12.9" Pro. That means mainly two things: firstly, every other iPad is for those who want a tablet and can manage with just a tablet and don't need a real computer (maybe they do have a windows or Mac desktop and want something for the couch); secondly, you are not saving money at all, with the 12.9", so your simile is straight up wrong in this case. Please, just for the sake of it, I mentioned the pricing in the comment just above. Read it before commenting

Same here! I switched back to macOS after close to four years of iPad-only work. I quickly became so much more productive with the Mac. As you mentioned, the Mac just does everything better (quicker and more efficiently). I love the iPad concept but iPadOS is not only comparatively limited but still very buggy. I was truly iPad-only for over three years. Not anymore. Apple contributed to my decision of going back to macOS by not paying attention to iPadOS development. That being said I will check iPadOS 18 when it comes out.

At home, I use my M1 iPad Air as a companion to my M1 Mac Mini, using them with universal control. When I'm not home, the iPad is my machine, I mean, I have a MacBook Air, but I haven't used it for so long, it works great, but currently I see no reason for a laptop anymore, I will not replace it. I'm a university professor and I give all my classes and lectures with the iPad + Logitech ComboTouch + a hub to connect the external screen or projector in the place I'm going to work. I don't plan going iPad only, I have used the Mac for decades and I don't see myself working without it, but the iPad doesn't allow me to miss it when I'm working with it.

My iPad Pro m1 as of now is a daily media device with some productive things splashed in. I bought it a year and a half ago and I love it BUT it is limited in my daily workflow life. Some of the limits are things that are third party issues that are out of Apple's control. I travel a lot and websites pick up I am using a mobile and it makes it difficult for me to fill out forms etc. The other issue is my accounting software is only compatible with a MacBook, if only IPAD can do this, it would make sense that IPAD is the way to go. The other issue is battery life with the Magic Keyboard is pathetic, it dies in a couple of hours. Great video BTW.

My iPad is uniquely capable with the Pencil for sketching, something I like to do. My 10.9" iPad Air 5 with Logitech Folio Touch is also just small enough to fit in my EDC bag, so I take it to the coffee shop to draft blog posts. I also take it to work as it's easier to tote. I am glad to hear that iPad is working for you. I went to opposite direction. I went from iPad only to iPhone + MacBook only 3 years ago, when I bought my MacBook M1 Air. Once I did it, I ran all from it and iPad Pro M1 started to be just occasional travel device, which is not good for its price. I sold it after about one month playing with stage manager and basically gave up on the platform. I think that Samsung Dex is much better concept than stage manager. I honestly don't understand Apple, why they just don't want to copy real desktop behaviour for iPad connected to external peripherals. Yeah, of course, I know why, they don't want to iPad cannibalise on Mac sales. I know that with combination with shortcuts, you can eliminate a lot of missing features, but it's still workarounds. In my job, I need to work with Windows + Microsoft 365 and I don't need additional such different environment to learn. It was constant struggle for me when I had my year of iPad only.

I want to use my iPad Pro as my main computer but seems like I need to get mac ASAP. My main priority is using Figma - iPadOS15 is peak Figma experience (I used Figurative) - iPadOS16 is okay for Figma. Figurative app working much worse but still usable. - iPadOS17 is okay for Figma but not anymore with 17.2 (Figurative keep crashing all the time) Safari keep showing me “Select All” context menu when right clicking which cover Figma menu. I really want Apple to make iPadOS Safari to behave like macOS Safari bc Web Apps work better on mac version. My secondary priority is coding SwiftUI app. Swift Playground working fine for me but as project becoming more complex, It would better to code on Xcode. Swift Playground lacks so many feature from Xcode. It doesn’t have Git, No CocoaPod support, No SVG support etc. If Apple gonna bring Xcode to iPad then well they will *INTENTIONALLY* make it a much worse version of Xcode as same as what they did with FCP for iPad (which sounds so stupid lol) Lastly, I really want a compatibility layer of mac app support on iPadOS. macOS can run iPadOS/iOS app. Why in the world iPad running macOS app would make no sense?

I have an 11” iPad Pro 2018(w/ Magic Keyboard) I got in 2019. I use it as my computer. I do have a late 2013  refurb rMBP. I only use that for taxes. I don’t do anything professional so the iPad Pro is perfect. I wanna upgrade to the 12.9 for the size and mini LED. For ME the only thing I want is a Time Machine app to backup to an external hard drive. I also would like an iPad mini 6 for a more portable experience but I can’t justify owning two iPads.

I remember when I got my iPad in 2016 which was a 2012 iPad 3 - it was entirely a gimmick and offered me almost nothing worthwhile over a PC or even my existing iPhone. My first new iPad in 2018 was an iPad 6, and at the time I still really struggled to get on board with it because of how few desktop apps were on the app store. Fast forward to 2023 and I almost never use desktop apps anymore which has rendered both of my old Macs and remaining Windows (now-Linux) laptops largely redundant. The only thing I need proper computer anymore is video games, hence the only PC I've continued to really use is my home gaming PC. For internet, art creation, messaging apps, and streaming, by 2022 my iPad 6 w/ Apple Pencil was starting to approach the realm of daily-driver material, and now my new iPad 10 w/ Apple Pencil & Magic Folio has achieved that very status.

I don’t have a personal laptop anymore, just an iPad Pro and I love it. However, I still have to carry a work laptop and use a mac studio on my desk for programming. The tooling I need for web development and server management just isn’t there yet on the ipad. If I can program on my iPad, I’d ditch the work laptop all together.

From the first gen, I’ve always had at least one iPad. Currently I have three an iPad mini, an M1 12.9 and an M2 11 pro. Esp the Mini and the 11 pro are my go to mobile devices. When I am writing and doing research I us the 12.9 with sidecar as a secondary display and I love that display for watching video’s and as a more relaxed computer for for email, browsing etc at home. However I rarely take it with my outside. I just upgraded my Mac to an M2 Air 15 inch and curious whether I’ll use the sidecar function as much with the larger screen. The 11 is my go to mobile work station and I also use it most of the time for video conferencing at home - somehow it is better at it than the M1 12.9. The Mini is my main reading device for Apple Books, news,… and carry it with me almost everywhere… I’ve been dreaming for a long time for a mini with pro accessories (at least a good first party keyboard)… that would be a magical device! Not sure whether I would replace the 12.9 - but I’ll always have an 11 (or similar) it remains for my use the best of all worlds: very portable, large enough to do some sustained work and immersive enough for watching content. For future software: I’d love to have a file management more akin to the mac and more flexibility in multi-tasking. Hardware: although the front facing camera is excellent for video conferencing, it would be nice to have it move to the center in landscape use. And if we’re dreaming: keep the usb-c port and add a MagSafe 3 (like the MacBook) for charging…

I type this on my iPad Pro 12.9 (current generation) and it has replaced a MacBook Pro as my laptop/mobile computer. At home I have a BTO Mac mini and the Cinema Display with the trackpad and it is my preference at the house. I do music and MIDI on the iPad is different from the Mac and many things are just not available for the iPad - like Rhodes V8 VST that I just recently bought. Video conversion and disc ripping SW also are not available on iPad for archiving discs. I also hate that Final Cut on the iPad is subscription only - I hate subscription software. I hate the very concept of renting software.

I use the M1 iPad Pro but for work (emails, meetings etc) and use g suite (web version as apps are not great). Also consume content like this. With the rumors around new iPad pro and redesigned keyboard I am really keen to see if it could replace my laptop altogether. We will see. As for Vision Pro, I am exactly the same. Cannot wait. Game changer if it is as good as they presented. Thanks for the awesome videos. Best. Dave

I’ve transitioned to 100% iPad pro now that we have great external drive support and Stage Manager. I have several 2Tb SSD drives attached to my thunderbolt 4 dock and now I wonder if I can plug my powered 3.5” hard drive hub into the thunderbolt dock, that dock has around 16 Tb of storage that would be nice to access from time to time, I need to test it, plug it in and see if it will work, being externally powered I’m thinking it just might give me access. I’m not sure if iPadOS has a drive capacity limit or not.

Great video as always Christopher, one of my favorite apple (specifically ipad) based RU-vid channels! I have been using my 2018, 11’ iPad Pro since march of 2019 (that is when i purchased it) and even through right now as I type this, have used it for my sped teaching career (apple has the best and most efficient and amazing educational apps), drawing, and note-taking. I am fully and have been since 2013, immersed with the apple ecosystem, so its another great way of connecting everything! I LOVE my 2018 iPad Pro and hope to squeeze a couple more years of it, but the battery is starting to degrade after almost 5 years of having it. I hope to see in 2024, a m3 iPad Pro at 12.9 or even, hopefully, 14’ with the camera facing on the top near the Apple Pencil charges. I love my M1 Pro MacBook Pro 16’ and its incredible, but somehow after all these years especially with the evolution of ipad os on the iPad Pro, has and continues to be my favorite apple and piece of technology ever. I literally continue to use my 2018 iPad Pro model for everything and it really handles everything so well!

I'd really love iPad to be my main computer for work. But I've got like dozens of questions I would need an answer to. Especially since I'm coming from PC and when I want to work with you touch, it feels so slow. For example the email app, do I really have to have all people in contacts? Why I can't copy BCC as a list and add to a new email? Etc. I wish there was a really thorough guide on how to use ipad at work, but for people coming from windows. Unfortunately I can't switch to Mac due to my work.

The battery life is the last barrier for me to go full iPad. It is great on my M2 iPad Pro, don't get me wrong, but compared to my M1 Macbook Air, it is not even close. I don't need much power to do my work and i need to charge the Mac every two days in average which makes it the perfect device for my workflow. But paired with the Apple Pencil, using the iPad is so much joy, i would love one that last 15 to 18 hours on one charge, that would do it for me.

I do love ipados and I can fully work using it without the need for a mac. However I’m starting to learn coding and I need VS and Xcode. I’m trying swift code now and it’s limited i can see that.. it’s really annoying just for this reason I will need to buy a new MacBook Air that may be not strong enough or just keep using my MacBook Pro 2015 device. iPad can do everything and in a better way although the battery is annoying compared to MacBooks. Your comment made me think of going with MacBook Air further although I don’t really know if it’s worth the money just for battery. Do you use it for social media? What are your uses?

I REALLY want to go to just an iPad setup but my budget currently doesn't allow it lol. So, I currently have a 8th gen iPad with a Logitech Combo Touch case for mobile computing needs and I have a 2016 MacBook Pro that is my "desktop". I say desktop cause it has a slight screen issue with it that when I tilt it back it discolors big time. Hoping to get that fixed soon. But, if I were able to find a 2018 12.9 iPad Pro or a M1 iPad of some sort and pair a magic keyboard with it for a reasonable price, I'd probably go for it.

I have an iPad since the first one came out, but always used it as a consumption device until…now. I’m about a week or two of saving up for the the 12.9 1TB M2 iPad - as I only have the 4th gen and I can’t use external or even Final Cut 😢. But as soon as I do I’ll be transitioning to work only from an iPad.. and it will mainly be about running my marketing freelancing biz (building websites) and video editing

Hey Chris! I am also discovered the adhd and preset the working station after reading the book on it with covering main flaws of attention span, etc. I loved your video on Macbook, since I am a strong user of 16 inch macbook and using the ipad was always a Pain in the ass for me, not all apps were optimized, etc. Also I am 8 yrs in IT and I am Senior Product Designer, so I have my ipad mini and macbook 16 inch, which solves it all. I also used some apps or stage manager on mac to be able to focus more. For me, iPad is way small device and not suitable for UI UX work, my 27 inch display helps me to get work done as well, sometimes it can be distructing though, but the I go fullscreen + floating widget with the focus I am working on

Hey Christopher! I love your videos and have been a subscriber for a while. Currently my laptop and Ipads are all suffering from battery bloat and other issues associated with keeping them charged too long too often and simply just being old. Your video was right on time today as I revisited my reoccurring debate about Ipad vs Mackbook as my next device. I was inspired by your journey and just wanted to ask what your recommendation for the best Ipad device and specs if one is on a budget and trying to begin editing for a RU-vid channel? I am a long time broadcast television producer so I used to work with an editor who went from Final Cut to Adobe Premiere and doing light editing myself for my shows - I followed her lead. As I attempt to evolve into RU-vid channel producing and editing myself more deeply - which software do you ride for as the best? Should I start with Lumafusion or slide right to your beloved Final Cut? Do you have any other advice? I use a docking station into a 34 inch curved screen right now w my Mac, so I could def use your insight as to the best gear to replicate my previous experiences on a big screen with an Ipad... thanks in advance!

I’m not a videographer or photographer so apps like LumaFusion, Resolve, and others don’t necessarily appeal to me. So, yeah it’s great for YOU guys and I get why you’re ditching your laptop. But, I’m a software engineer and I would like my iPad to be able to do that easily. If Apple could get it the proper support, I would do the same. As of now, the iPad is a media consumption machine I occasionally take on trips and have ZERO incentive to upgrade.
