Another great video, i was taught how to lay pavers or slabs as we call them in Ireland by a builder friend and he told me to wet the side being layed on the sand and cement should be wet so that the dry slab doesnt draw all of the moisture from the sand and cement mix.This is help with the bonding of the mix and the slab .

hello Scott I am writing from London, I love all of your videos, just I would like to suggest that the best way to lay slabs is to back butter first and than layer full with sharp sand and cement, and also use a tile hammer mallet.

Full bed under your slabs dude..... some slabs will actually bleed through where you have spotted your mortor...so when you look at them they will have slight dark patches on top of the slabs...if you full bed them and that does happen the whole slab colour will change slightly but it won't stand out. And it also stops them cracking through the middle over time. Other than that you have done a lovely neat job 👍
@ScottBrownCarpentry
@ScottBrownCarpentry 5 лет назад

Joshua Simoneaux I think it covered way more than just the corners because there were decent hight on the four spots of slab. And it covers more than you saw at first as well when they pushed them down I would imagine.

Hey lads, greets from Edinburgh! Like someone kindly mentioned you'd be doing yourselves a big big favour by laying on a full bed of semi dry sharp sand. Not only is this the right way of doing it, it's also much cleaner. Plus, semi dry mortar is a doddle to lay your slabs on. Give it a try next time.

A short piece of L bar aluminium makes a great base for consistently levelling pavers. It won't bend or degrade over time, so it lasts forever. Just place a short piece along each gap, so each consecutive paver rests on it (one short piece underneath the pavers at each of the gaps)...level them all first, then lay your pavers. The road base will lock the bar in place, and the pavers won't move. Then lay sand, or the gel-lock sand, and they won't move even if the substrate settles.

If you do gravel/dirt work somewhat regularly, you should get a muck rake. Makes life much easier. And I don't know if it's a US thing, but we always spray water on our crushed rock when we compact it, I think it makes it compact tighter/harder.

2 questions ¹ why wet the slab after laying it? ² wouldnt laying the mortar on the corners only make the center more susceptible to breaking?
@bg73
@bg73 5 лет назад
1. to stop any spilled wet cement from setting on the laid paver... 2. He put some in the middle too
@andrewhitchens7832
@andrewhitchens7832 5 лет назад
1- not necessarily wetting the slab just cleaning any spots of mortar that my have splashed onto them. Once the mortar dries any on top of the pavers will stand out quiet a lot 2- yes should always lay on full mud bed not just corners to help spread load and eliminate any weak spots. However as the pavers is knocked down the mortar may spread underneath to even out the bed a bit
