My beloved brother was going to teach me; he taught both of my children! Alas, we didn't have time ... and now, tonight, I found your video and am better understanding of the game. Thank you!!! I have my brother's game set - now just have to find someone with whom to play. Again, you're a good teacher.

I was a bit sceptical when I started watching the first video in this series but it really explained things very clearly and I really feel like I know how to play after watching the video series.

Ensor42, finally at age 63 & knowing ZERO about the game, you have enlightened me. I anticipate playing against my Bro-In-Law when out west in 2 weeks and, for this 'older student' your series has been a God-send. Many, Many Thanks from Michigan, USA

My wife and I really enjoyed your series. We were away on holiday when we saw people playing the game in cafe's and got hooked on this facinating game. Now we have bought a board and play at a very elementary level we would love to learn more. I bought Backgammon for Dummies but watching your RU-vid clips made it much easier to follow. A big thanks for all your efforts! Bernard and Anne

Thank you very much for this series on beginner backgammon. I just got my board, read the enclosed instructions and thought I had a handle on the rules. Your videos cleared up all the questions I had and corrected a couple of misunderstandings I had about the rules. I appreciated your explanation about doubling. You took the scare factor out of it. I am looking forward to teaching my husband and to many, many hours of fun and challenging play.

Wonderful teaching! I learned from someone that set up the board backward from what you have it, so when I went to play online games of backgammon, I was lost. Your instructions is set up exactly how the online playing is. Thank you for your detailed instructions to make it much easier to understand and to play. Very much appreciated.

excellent stuff,Ensor chap...I learned to play the bold gammon from an oul Greek fellah on the isle of Rhodes about eons ago,who after giving me the basics(plus let me win two out of the first three he showed me)suggested we make it more interesting, naturally by wagering a few drachmas for the next few games, and promptly gubbed me quick style:!! His dice and checkers moving like a scalded cat around the board!Fell in love with the game then and stumbling across your tutorials made me buy a little set and remember,"Hey,I know this game!"Love it;thank you for the excellent vids....good man yerself😆

Sir thank you for the videos! You explained the basics of backgammon very well. I played the game before but had forgotten how to play. Your videos gave me a clear understanding of the game, and I can now try to teach others how to play. I also now know the use of the doubling dice and the purpose of pips. I will definitely refer other new beginners to watch your videos. Thank you!

Great series. Now that I've finished this series I look forward to your series for more advanced players. You have a wonderful British accent. I live in Brooklyn and the people around here really destroy the English language, you show us how beautiful English really is. I'm 74 years old and am now learning backgammon after playing chess all my life. I look forward to many more years of life, I will be enjoying my retirement with Social Security playing Backgammon and chess. BTW I have downloaded GNU chess and have been playing with it using the instructions you give in your series. My computer runs Linux Ubuntu not windows but Gnubg runs great on "wine." .

This tutorial was really well-paced for a complete beginner. I have been playing backgammon for a while now but still picked things up particularly in the 2 doubling videos that I did not understand before. I certainly would appreciate a "next level up" tutorial that continues on where this leaves off. E.g. for players who have mastered the basics but want to go to the next level.

Gra Piken, I see your post is two years old. If I had seen it when you first posted it, my suggestion would have been to IGNORE pip counting, and IGNORE the doubling cube for your first several dozen games. Instead, if you haven't started your first game yet, then just concentrate on the rules of the game and moving the checkers. Learning how to use the doubling cube, and learning how to count pips can come later.

Thank you Sir, as a teenager I was taught backgammon (and many other games) by an older friend who I subsequently discovered was a compulsive cheat who made up rules to suit his needs as, and when, required so I had to relearn Chess, Poker, Bridge,... well, almost everything after Snakes and Ladders. This guy used to do the bank in Monopoly and give himself a £500 note between his two £100 notes every time he passed Go. That was when I discovered he wasn't the best teacher I ever had. So, when my wife and I tried to play backgammon many years ago and found it totally confusing (according to my friend's rules) we gave up. Recently my wife suggested we try again and I found your series which has been invaluable and has made me quite excited about starting to play Backgammon properly. My wife is going to watch the series as well so that we can help each other learn the correct rules. Again, thank you for taking the time to do this, I really appreciate it. Best Wishes, Brendan.

Thanks to your series, I've learned how to play the esoteric backgammon. Good old Northern English dialect. Clear and unambiguous instructions, unpretentious and concise. What got me into the series was the short length of the first video- which I thought would explain everything. I was so drawn in by that first video that I found myself watching all of them in the end. If you had combined them all into one 1-hour video I would never have watched it- so it's a good thing you didn't, although it might be worth creating another video with all of them combined and mention at the start of all videos that you've posted both a fragmented as well as combined version. Gonna try to find a free online version now. The average beginner probably doesn't want to download anything onto their computer(certainly doesn't want to pay) and probably prefers to play directly from their browser- I don't think you included a website with this information.

Very instructive and precise, as a beginner I will now try backgammon (online against a computer opponent), but I will not bother with pip counting or the doubling cube. I think there's enough excitement in just the single game itself, at least for a beginner to work his way through and have fun at.

I've just finished viewing all sixteen videos. This was very helpful. Very clear and concise explications. Now I do pose two questions:1) When the player's turn has commenced and the dices are rolled, does the highest rolled number have to addressed first (e.g., six and a one; the six being put to use, or there is no impersonal preference of the game applied to the players discretion)2) When a player has been hit more than once, that is, two checkers now placed on the bar, do those two "bounced" checkers have to be moved first onto the board before the player's other pieces on the board can be moved once again? In addition to that, I'm claiming two or more checkers on the bar as an inevitable result due to two checkers being hit in the same turn (by two different checkers) or what was termed the Dancing effect.I just want to be sure about what I've imagined in prospect thus far. Would be grateful. Thanks!!

Wow! The _Extreme Gammon_ is brilliant, but oh so bloody difficult. I started at the top level and have quickly migrated down the levels to something more akin to an reformed smart-ass. Talk about coming down to earth with a bump. I love the analysis and suggestions the tutoring offers. I'm still using my Free Trial Version at the moment, but for just shy of £30.00 you can't complain. So many features and tools for the price is amazing. I hope you get around to making another series beyond beginners. There's nothing out there on RU-vid at all to quench my thirst for learning this game. Cheers Ensor. Craig

Just to followup my comment yesterday. From a beginner's perspective having fun with Backgammon, using Linux, GNU Backgammon has been perfect. Easy to install (Using Ubuntu 11.04) and runs well. The beginner AI setting is easy enough to beat, yet can teach you some lessons about leaving lone checkers around! I recommend it to get the hang of the rules. Works as advertised.

This series has been brilliant for myself and my wife to learn the game. I have two questions: Is there a procedure before the game starts to decide who plays black and who plays white (or red in the case of the set used here)? And do the players ever change which colour they play during a match? Do you have any recommendations for Backgammon apps for iPads? Thanks again.
