THIS VIDEO: In photography 101 we are told that the best snaps happen when we have the sun on our back and the subject directly in front of us. While this method is solid advice, its often not the most interesting approach. Straightforward lighting can make one’s subject look bland or washed out in harsh light. Phorographers often experience a resistance to moving into a position where the sun is shining towards the lens, because it becomes less controllable. That’s true, but it also provides opportunities to inject a sense of drama and mood into your photographs.

ABOUT ME: The conversations focus on topics related to different aspects of photography including: art, documentary and photojournalism. The discussions explore the personal experiences of photographers and artists and how their work reflects both their internal and external landscape. During the past 30 years I have photographed in over 50 countries for magazines including National Geographic, Time, New York Times and Newsweek. I have held solo exhibitions in New York, London and Paris and my work is showcased in private and institutional art collections around the world.

I am really enjoying your channel Graeme, thank you for the highly interesting and informative material. It was great to see you feature Fan Ho, since I was recently introduced to his work I have become a big fan, wishing I had been more aware of his work while I lived in HK. I will be watching out for your next video 🙏

I just discovered this channel and what a tremendously inspiring photographic treasure trove it is! There are on RU-vid a few photographic pearls so to speak and this is definitely one of them. Thanks a lot for the great and, again, inspiring work you do! All the best from The Netherlands.

It's W Eugene Smith (II have the book in front of me). You could also have mentioned Salgado, who realized that he always photographed against the light when he heard a visitor say so at an exhibition.

Hi Got it, thanks. Yes, Salgado is another photographer who wasn't scared of sunlight.

"The Black Rose," Trent Parke. It's on RU-vid. Also Shadowman, a photo. Imitative Photography looks at work by select photographers, then sets out to do something similar.
