Each year there are thousands of violent animal attacks and The Ultralight Backpacking community is afraid to talk about it. Animal attacks are a serious concern and as a hiker, I think it's important that we have a fact based discussion about the real and imagined dangers.
Today's hike brings us just outside of Mount Rainier National Park to the Greenwater River in Washington state. This is just one of the many beautiful destinations in the Pacific Northwest.
We will stop by the river, filter some fresh glacier runoff and make a great cup of coffee, then get down to business discussing the real and shocking truth about violent animal attack in the USA.

Thanks for stopping by Northwest Walking. I'm a one man operation but having fun learning along the way. If you have something you'd like me to try out or an outdoor adventure you'd like to see, let me know in the comments and I'll do my best.
The support is greatly appreciated. Let's get outside and go for a walk!

Dog attacks are more prevalent than bear or cougar attacks. saves 7 minutes of watching.

Way to present a super difficult topic... "Spot On"... I've talked about this same thing many times... I used to think it was just being unfamiliar... But IDK.. Great Topic and Video... ✌️

Glad to hear I’m not the only one. I was pretty shocked by the statistics. Not at all what I was expecting. Thanks for the great feedback!

And don't forget bug attacks for when they jump into your coffee.

Barely any wild animal attacks and 'domesticated' dogs are the most dangerous animal out there by a pretty stark degree. I guess nobody had to tell me humans are a bad influence.... Lol. I think it has to do more with domestic dogs both feeling protective of and emboldened by their owners, if they were wild there'd be nobody to protect and nobody to back them up, that would change the paradigm for humans as well as dogs when it comes to a fight or flight response. I knew a Jack Russell that would try to start a fight with pretty much anything that moved if her owner was within line of sight, and I've known more than a few people who behaved the same way when their child, parent or SO was around.

That is a sad statistic but comparing it to wild animal attacks is not really a comparison considering how much time we spend around domesticated dogs. The majority of my life has been spent with dogs and the amount of time spent with all the wild animals is zero.

Great point! That was part of what I was conveying. Our everyday lives are filled with risk and potential danger. Hiking is no different and the fear of animals in nature shouldn’t be a deterrent for those wanting to venture outdoors. Thanks for the great comment!

I was attacked by of all creatures a ruffed grouse. Must have been close to her chicks as she pecked at my boots. lol.

That must’ve been terrifying and hilarious all at the same time. I’m not sure how fast my heart would be beating after a grouse bounding from the bushes. Thanks for the great share! 😁
