Join me as I take a two night, three day backpacking trip around Loowit (better known as Mount St. Helens.) Just over 40 years from the day when this mountain erupted you can still landscapes ravaged by pyroclastic flows. Yet, in many areas, you can see the march of nature as it recolonizes the landscape turning it from grey ash laden expanse to a vibrant green oasis. There are even forest with massive old growth trees! This hike is surely one of the most unique I've travelled. I'd put money that this hike covers more ecosystems mile-for-mile than almost any other.
THIS HIKE
The Loowit Trail is an approximately 27 mile loop that circumnavigates Mount St. Helens. There are several approaches to the trail, the shortest and most popular being from June Lake. I decided to start at Windy Ridge in hopes of finding a little more solitude. Many people trail run the entire trip in a day, however I'm in no shape for that! There are a few considerations to take into account when deciding which trailhead to start at and whether to travel clockwise or counter clockwise: Water availability, the unrelenting lava rock fields and the no camping zone from the South Fork of the Toutle River to Windy Pass. Choose wisely...

I've done a ton of hiking (PCT, AT, CT, TRT, Timberlinex10?) but this is without a doubt one of the toughest hikes out there. I actually pulled the plug on my first attempt - the ravines freaked me out. The second time I bypassed the first (Blue Lake Wash) and camped at Blue Lake and skipped the third (Shoestring) by exiting via the Ape Canyon Trail and road walking the last bit. I was solo and 64, so I didn't want to take chances.

Better to be safe than sorry! I was freaked out on the boulder fields. I kept picturing myself falling and snapping my leg 😬 luckily that didn't happen.

My daughter and I did the Loowit trail in 2009. We got got complete lost in the back side of the mountain and camped in the restricted area.

Whoops! I can't imagine it was too pleasant to camp in the restricted zone. It's pretty desolate over there and the water options aren't great.

We were on the way out. Camped by a creek with “ash” so thick we had to put it thru a bandanna then our filter.

Exceptionally well done video. Bravo! I am hoping to complete Loowit with my son in about a week. This was a big help in visualizing the trail. Many thanks!

Thanks for watching and I'm glad you found it useful. Make sure you check snow levels, it looks like one of the snowtel sites is showing 40+" of snow on the southern section of the trail. Not sure if the sensor is having an error or not. Also see what recent reports are showing for water availability. AllTrails is good for that. Lastly enjoy the trip!

Thanks for the kind feedback. 😁 I hope your trip goes well. My main tip for you is don't go on a weekend with record heat as the sun is brutal for many of the sections!

Was that the actual audio of the bumblebee? Or a sound effect? If so what mic are you using?
@Hikingindepth
@Hikingindepth 3 года назад
Surprisingly that was the actual audio. I film it at 60fps (slowed down to 24fps timeline in Premiere) on the iPhone XR ProMovie app, no external mic. I've actually been pretty impressed with the audio from the XR.

Thanks for watching! It's hard to pick a favorite, but I'd have to say picking and eating all the huckleberries or getting to the Toutle River after a hard day.

On a scale of 1 to Sketch, how sketch would you say this trail is?
@Hikingindepth
@Hikingindepth Год назад
The only sketch parts are going into and out of maybe two of the washes. Sketch factor maybe a 3 on a scale of 10 where 10 indicate rock climbing with ropes on the easier route. Honestly going over those big lava rock fields made me more uneasy. I always feel like I might fall and break a leg!
@daddancingmywaythroughit

@@Hikingindepth awesome - thank you! I am looking at doing this solo and was wondering how sketch the ropes and ridges were. sounds like they aren't too bad. great video!!

Does anyone know if this trail is doable in late June?
@Hikingindepth
@Hikingindepth 3 года назад
Based on All Trails reviews from years past you'll likely encounter some snow, but it seems that it should be doable. I'd check SNOTEL sites in the area to see what amount of snow might be left. July would probably be a safer bet though.
