We finally found the time to head down south and check out Kentucky's beautiful Red River Gorge. This area, nestled in Daniel Boone National Forest, is usually a very popular rock climbing, hiking, and backpacking destination. We spend 3days/2nights on the Sheltowee-Osborne loop. It was very cool finally being able to get on the iconic Sheltowee Trace trail. Temperatures dropped into the low-20s so this became a full-on winter loadout trip for us.
Red River gorge was fantastic! The fall colors were popping! definitely an area we will have to get back to in order to see the major sites there. Enjoy!

Packit Gourmet FTW! For your first trip to The Gorge, it looked like a great trip. You need to check out the Sky Bridge Station for local brews and great food. I don't think they serve alcohol on Sunday, so hit them on the way to the trail is my pro-tip for The Gorge. Starting the hike with a fine IPA and some loaded hummus in the furnace is a great start to the trip.

The RRG is an amazing place. It's a two drive for me but I rarely get to go. During the week you'll have the place to yourself, the weekends are like a damn jamboree or something! Why someone told you that loop for your first trip is a mystery. There are rules for camping but they're never enforced. Trees and water are abundant so I've been a hammock camper for a long time. The chairs....I swear I'd skip food to make up the weight of the chair, it's become an essential piece of gear. You can spend years exploring and not see it all. I'd tell you my secret campsites but then I might run into you there when I'm trying to camp! Plan your trips for going at least once in each season, summer is deep damp rain forest, winter with the leaves off is breathtaking views....so much to see! Come back...read the rules on your parking pass!

No hate here! Been going to the Gorge for over 20 years and still haven’t hit some of the major spots. You guys went right past my favorite spot. Just on the right side of that bridge are two trails, one climbs & the other descends along the river. We take the lower. Hope to see you guys do more trips there, like you said, there’s plenty to see! The face bags were a riot...and a little creepy

If you guys can afford the vacation time and want to do a warmer weather RRG hike, going there on the weekdays really is the way to go. I'm shocked you saw many people as cold as it was. In three full days of hiking there in late May on weekdays, I saw no more than seven groups of other hikers. Doing a Western roadtrip with a bunch of hikes next summer, but plan to hit up RRG again when I head back eastward in two summers. I absolutely loved it there.

@@SchillBrothersOutdoors practically indispensable for a gorge hike ... i have a lot of videos on my yt of various hikes I have done there. There is also a book called hinterlands about the gorge, it has hundreds of unofficial trails ... i've done all the trails in that book except 1 and I haven't done that one simply because I promised someone I would hike it with them.

I love “winter” car camping here in the NW Florida Panhandle. My son and I had a tradition of a two nighter every December 22-24 at Blackwater River SP. Funny but true Gorge story....my brother, youngest son & wife, and myself were day hiking in the Gorge years ago and somehow went off trail and got lost. Son hikes up to a peak and miraculously gets cell service! Who does he call? His older brother in Tucson, Arizona, who having hiked/backed-packed all his life in the Gorge gives us directions and gets us out of there! Now older son and fam are back in Cincinnati. But if you ever need help down there, I know who to call! 😄

@@asmith7876 Yep me too, 1978-79 Winter. Ah the days when Tunnel Ridge Road was open to the end. No rules about camping in the rock houses... trust me, they are called back country rangers and they do hike the official (numbered) trails. Law enforcement usually is working the parking areas for passes Wed-Sun. Local police are called in for drug enforcement and other crimes. The back country rangers write tickets for illegal fires/camping ect. Ask about it next time your at Gladie. Your experience is probably due to the sheer volume of people that visit now vs the 1 or 2 BC Rangers at any given time.
