What Backpacking Gear Did I Send Home on My Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike?
When I started my Appalachian Trail thru-hike, I packed what I thought was essential backpacking gear. But along the way, I quickly learned what I actually needed and what was just weighing me down. In this video, I’m breaking down all the gear I sent home and why it didn’t make the cut. From bulky camping equipment to hiking gadgets I barely used, this is an honest look at my Appalachian Trail gear regrets.
Whether you’re preparing for your own AT thru-hike or just curious about the backpacking essentials that didn’t survive the journey, this video covers it all. Learn what to avoid packing, hear about my real-life backpacking mistakes, and get tips on what gear is truly worth bringing on a long-distance hike.

Nice to see you had your gear so dialed in that you sent things home not because they didn't work for you or you hated them, but because the season changed! Congrats on finishing strong!

I'm am a Norwegian and of course the mesh shirt is warm. You should only use it next to skin in colder conditions, and it is pointless to use it as a stand alone item. Under another layer it is (in it self) just as warm as a dense merino wool item, but at a much lower weight and always having a dry sensation (and also actually being drier). You can also use several layers of these of the meshed shirt. And personally I never bring a puffy jacket. I just bring an extra meshed shirt or two to put under a windbreaker/rain jacket. I only bring a (thicker) puffy jacket when I am in the high mountains in the dead of a Norwegian winter. Or in the low lands when it is very cold. The short sleve mesh don't make any sense to me. Only use the long sleve.... and with the shoulder protection (with a back pack). The mesh bottoms are also good under the pants in the winter, but I usually go for the micro mesh, because they are less warm. PS. when I am in the woods I always use the merino mesh underpants (Brynje). You can't get hold of them in the states, and even in Norway they er very hard to get hold of (they are not posted on their home page). This is what I would use on a though hike on the Appalachian trail. Almost odorless, dries quickly, and always keep perfect temperature. They also make you an instant Chippendale man to the women.

@Oslohiker when I found out about it, I wanted to try it, but it was definitely too warm. I can't wait to try it when it's cold.

Great Video! May I make a request? Do a video (If you have time) on what you finally winter and summer load out is after completion. We all send stuff home but also rely on other hikers experience when prepairing. Regardless, due to this and other videos, I will be leaving my sleeping bag liner home. I started the AT in 2020 and came off due to covid and will be restarting the trail this Feb 2025. Thanks for the great videos, and keep it up!!

Let me save you 10 min: when it got warmer he sent his cold weather stuff home. No, this isn’t the video you thought it was. It’s not a list of gear you shouldn’t bring because it’s not useful. Sigh.
