Back in Uwharrie National forest the Birkhead Mountain Wilderness Area.
This trip I go off trail to a location that I found geographically interesting.
My goal is to explore this unique wilderness area in North Carolina, off the beaten path, and try and find ancient relics of the past.
I will also be researching and exploring the many myths, folklore and legends of the Uwharrie mountainous region and farther west into the Appalachian zone.
I have a few more trips planned this winter and early spring to explore the Birkhead Wilderness, these will be off trail and in remote areas.

I failed to mention two things in the video. One, i did not observe any deer, squirrels, turkey rabbit, etc.. only birds flying overhead. I found this a little unusual. Usually, you at least see a few squirrels, some deer scat, footprints absolutely nothing in a 24-hour period. Second, I did not pick up anything on the trail cam. Only 1 picture, my face 😊. P.S. I did see boot prints and dog prints on the main trails.

Every time I go there, I always notice how void of life those woods are. Like you said, no birds, no squirrels, no deer, nothing. I wonder why?

I'm glad someone else mentioned this. I'm not going crazy. I did see and heard birds. I'm going to make it a point next time to look for footprints along the streams. Animal activity might pick back up in the spring

I'm not a bigfoot believer and I've been backpacking the Uwharrie NF for a very long time and never had anything even remotely approaching an "encounter". And then in the early fall of of last year it happened. Down on the south end, maybe two miles up the Dutchman's Creek trail from the 24/27 trailhead something huge ran down the trail past my campsite in the middle of the night (12:40am to be precise), in the pitch black, with no light source. This thing had loud thumping footfalls and I could hear it coming long before it reached my campsite and for a long way as it went on down the trail. It was fast, too, and there's a creek right right there that's not really big, but it's at the bottom of a hill with a tree right in the path and it's all washed out, so you have to be careful crossing it even in broad daylight. This thing, though, it never skipped a beat, just jumped right over it and kept on running. Like I said, I'm not a bigfoot believer, but I can't explain what that was and it unnerved me enough that the next day I headed back to the trailhead and took a different trail going in the opposite direction. I've been back that way since then and was even out there last weekend, but I haven't heard or seen anything similar since that night.

Wow ! Great story. It's times like those, you kinda wish you had someone else with you. It's good to see you're still back out there and not deterred. It might have been a 🐎 horse, maybe a big deer. For me, bigfoot usually is an afterthought when camping/hiking. I'm more interested in finding unique natural and man-made features. Which I plan to continue to do in Birkhead, and add a little folklore along the way. Thanks for commenting.

@@silverwolvesutility5219 Yeah, if I was a believer I'd never go backpacking alone, but I'm not. The thought of bigfoot never even enters my mind when I'm out there and even when this happened I didn't think much about it until the next morning and what spurred that was two trail runners whom I never heard at all until they were maybe 8 feet from my tent and navigating that creek crossing and even then it was just their breathing. I didn't hear their footfalls at all and never do unless they come right up on me on the trail. That's what got me thinking what in hell did I hear the night before if I can't hear these TWO trail runners at all and why didn't it have a flashlight? I don't think it was a horse or a deer or anything. I guess it could've been a bear, but it was on two legs and it was a heavy THUMP! THUMP! THUMP! as it was running. I did check the trail for bear tracks, though, because even if it didn't leave prints there would've been claw marks, but there was nothing, and that's not bear territory anyway. I don't know, man. It was just really weird.

Uwharrie is a great place to camp, but be extra careful of rattle snakes during the warmer months.

Thanks for the heads up. Going to try and get a few more camps in before spring, late March and explore off trail. Do you know the time when they start coming out ?

Get a good pair of snake boots, don't go cheap on them either, for multiple reasons. They have never been needed for me, but I'm glad I have them.

I occasionally find an arrowhead on those mossy spots at the base of trees that are brought to the surface by the tree root growth

Can't help but wonder if you're seeing quartz rock at the base of trees because beings are leaning next to tree trunks and working the quartz to create tools out of the quartz.
@silverwolvesutility5219
@silverwolvesutility5219 5 месяцев назад
Interesting theory. When I'm out there next, I'll keep an eye out. I think as the tree grows, the roots push the rocks and quartz to the surface. Also, reading more history of Birkhead Mountain, people have done a lot of surface mining up there, and still today, others go around and smash the quartz up, hoping to get lucky.

So the funky tree, I've been told that it was broken and bent that way many many years ago by native americans who used it for navigation purposes. That was a campfire story/bit of knowledge/story told to me. So are you more kf the geologist or the outdoorsman? Either way I like your take on the wilderness and will keep watchinv.

I plan on picking up a good pair of gaiters for off trail exploring. Since I can remember, I've always enjoyed researching long and forgotten places plus unique natural features. I guess you can say I'm an amateur geologist. Not an expert outdoors men buy anymeans, but I always feel at home in the deep forest.

You do have to worry about ticks brother. They are out all year round. Best thing to do is treat all your clothes and backpack and tent with permethrin that kills them on contact.
@silverwolvesutility5219
@silverwolvesutility5219 5 месяцев назад
I agree. Coming from upstate NY it's really bad with the tick population. There is a decline in winter. But you're right. The threat is always there. Permethrin is ✅️ noted.

Thanks for the link. I will be going back there soon and look for more stone mounds etc... Also do a better job of recording them. The national forest service website for Birkhead wilderness area does say there are indian artifacts in those woods. You can look at them but can not take home or disturb them. I'm brushing up on the local history so I can give a better narrative.
