How refreshing to see a hiking video without distracting music, and at an enjoyable pace so we can actually see and hear the surroundings. Beautiful job!
A gorgeous area, Jarl. Incredible views everywhere. I think I liked the friction slab the best, the waterfalls near the top were very impressive. Of course the views from Mount Silliman were awesome. I liked your marmot friend who seemed to go about his business with no concern for visitors. You were very shrewd to find another route when the hike proved too sketchy. Thanks for sharing and safe journeys.
Beautiful video Norwegian Explorer! That's my old home territory - I was the Ranger Lake backcountry ranger for a couple of seasons 30+years ago. The NPS stopped having a ranger stationed there after the 2000 season). Climbed Silliman more times than I can remember and never tired of the view all the way to Mt. Whitney and Mt. Russell on the Sierra Crest and to the Palisades and Mt. Goddard in northern Kings Canyon NP. For future reference, the saddle you were intending to cross from Crescent Lake (James Sheep Pass) to the Tablelands is actually fairly easy and the travel once you are on top is easy in several directions. The small lake you stopped at on the way to Crescent Lake is one of two stair stepped lakes we called Morningstar Lakes and the little lake just NW of Lost Lake is Upper Sheep Camp Lake. Very little snow in the Tablelands for this time of year, though not as dry as some of the years in the late 80's.
Thank you Bob, this is fantastic information to have, I was wondering if the saddle had a name, could not find any beta, but on my maps it did look doable, I was also considering going straight (south) on the saddle I was already on past Crescent Lake and up the shorter route that had a few snow covered chutes going up on the ridge, but I felt I was running out of time for doing things I wasnt sure about. This is great to know for next time, the area east of Mt Silliman is amazing! There were actually nobody at Ranger Lake when I got there, so I had the whole area east of Silliman Pass to myself. Yes, very little snow, I carried my crampons and Ice axe without using them, I actually carried my 38lb backpack all the way to the gap below Mt Silliman in case I would be able to go down the steep chute to Little Lakes. Thanks for the valuable info:-)
Bob, I may have met you at Ranger Lake 30+ years ago on my very first extended journey in the Sierra (Deadman Canyon loop). I then got the backpack bug bad, and been just about everywhere in the Sierra. I have been through that area three or four times, and it never gets old. I still plan on getting to Lost Lake, probably from Rowell Meadow. Seville Lakes is nice.
In 1977 I went on my first backpacking trip to Twin, Ranger, and Lost lakes. I was 16. My mother had hiked to Ranger Lake in the 1950s when she worked at Giant Forest, and recommended it. Went back to the area at least three times. Failed a cross country route to Moose Lake one year due to too much snow in the Tablelands. Summited Silliman twice. Remember leaving a new journal in the summit registry (then an ammo box) because the old one was full, about 1980. Becoming a Backcountry Ranger was my dream job back then. Thanks for the memories Norwegian Xplorer!
Watching this one again. That Silliman camp spot is wonderful. And the beautiful lakes along the attempt to reach the table land were worth the trip. Thanks. God bless.
This Video made me want to dig out my backpacking photos (35mm) from decades ago when I took pictures of some of the exact scenes at Silliman Ridge! Thanks for the memories...!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video from start to finish. 😍 @5:50 and @7:36- I love hiking on granite like that. So beautiful! Sweet campsite @10:00. Those were some epic views from the top of Mt Silliman. Wow!♥️♥️ Sequoia National Park really has it all - the views, the lakes, the waterfalls and the wildlife. I have yet to run across a bear except in Yosemite Valley a number of years ago (in the valley). Ranger Lake was definitely worth the change in plans. Mount Silliman is gorgeous from that lake! Great adventure!
Thank you Maryann, I seem to run into bears wherever I go these days, Utah, Sequoia, Yosemite, Washington etc, I am not sure why, but I love it, bears are awesome lol
Norwegian Xplorer - LOL! I do hike solo, but still haven't been lucky. Although I've seen a bob cat and felt like a much bigger kitty cat was watching me. But no bears. Maybe I need to work on the smell a little more! 😱😆😂
I love everything about this video - the beautiful scenery and narration. I was often thinking the same thoughts, right before you said them. Wonderful, thanks!
Oh my goodness thank you so much for sharing the west side. I have clearly, incorrectly been an eastern sierra snob for to many years. I will have to expand my horizons after seeing this. Your last several videos have been absolutely stunning, editing and music (those wind chimes💖) have been spot on. But the game changer is including yourself in the videos it makes a huge difference. A perfect balance. Thank you again for sharing this, off trail in the sierras is the only way to go.
Thank you so much, that was awesome to hear, my first time in the west too, I like both, as long as I can get out of the woods a bit and see some views lol
Unbelievable! You might've come from Norway to my backyard to visit and enjoy a place that I have not explored like you have. Great job! The shots and quality of your video are excellent.
The meadows and lakes are so beautiful. The reflection you captured of the snow on the lake in the early morning was awesome. Spectacular views. The trees growing in the high country are so unique. Their twisted trunks and sparse branches. Great video!
Thanks for the beautiful video. Gave me great nostalgia for long ago trek through same area when my wife and I were newly married circa 1977. It was our first solo hike as a couple and led to many more years of trekking the length and breadth of SEKI country. Will continue looking for your video stories.
Our backing days ended many years ago so you have enabled so many wonderful memories for us and we thank you for that your video is stunning we played it on a video projector and felt we were right there
loved your video - watched parts of it on my lunch break. Thank you for making it. It was not over done or under done - just perfect. Crowley Canyon is a wonderful canyon in it's upper reaches, not too many folks take the time and effort to explore back up there...beautiful to see this full screen in HD - very smoothly filmed !
I see you were keeping the mosquitoes at bay with the head net Jarl! 😂😂😂. Wow! That was beautiful. Those reflection shots from Silliman Lake were amazing. Makes me miss California a little. 😉
Amazing trip, NX! Thanks for showing us that, sometimes, the trip doesn't turn out quite as planned, and turning around may be the better decision. The mountain will always be there... as they say.
Absolutely, I didnt have much beta except for my maps when I planned this, but looking back at my footage I discovered a different route up to the Tableland, straight up from Crescent lake.
Very nice, brings back memories of hiking thru Tablelands as a younger person. I also crossed thru on the High Sierra Route north of there 2 times in May and skied across the Sierra, exited north of Whitney. I love that part of the Sierra...it's been many years since I've been there.
The most beautiful. place I used to travels like this years ago I don't climb since 2011 but Im always around mountains we live beautiful States in America I grow up since childhood three snow country unti l now this is paradies😲 thank you bless your heart good luck wish you the best mercy 🏵️🌼🌻🌺🥀
This was great! I passed over this video a few times until tonight when I recognized your smile in the thumbnail....the guy that hiked a couple of outings with Joey C! You obviously learned well from him and have his same passion for being out in the wilderness. I immediately subscribed after watching the first few minutes. Keep up the good work and keep doing what you enjoy. It clearly shows in your video.
Thanks for sharing your adventure Norway. I used to live not that far from Sequoia National Park. Never hiked it, but I've been up there a couple of times. I didn't realize how beautiful it is going with you on your hike. Thanks again my friend and be careful and take care.
That was great. THANKS Made me home sick for the place. I was lucky enough to have lived and worked in Giant Forest for 5 years '83-'88. Before they tore down most of the building in the old Lodge area. What a Special place
I was a carpenter for the people that operated all the hotels, restaurants gift shops and other guest facilities. I got to work from Three rivers to Cedar Grove and Bearpaw. It was big fun
Thank you so much for all this beauty that you discover for all of as who can't go places like this. I can't stop watching your videos and admire in your knowledge in filming, music arrangement, in everything you do and say. Awesome work. Even though I enjoy that there is no people in your video I get worried when I see a bear close to you. How do you protect yourself from wild animals while you sleep? Please be careful. 😊
Thanks for a well-composed and beautiful video. The size of your pack reminds me of old times . . . but marmots encountered on a cross-country route were seldom so approachable back then!
Robert Phillips thanks for your kind coment Robert, I dont mind a big pack since I do a lot of desert expeditions where you have to carry gallons of water, its good for me to be prepared for that in terms of being able to handle the weight.
What I liked about your video compared to Kraig Adam is that you TAKE time to SMELL the ROSES and just take it all IN. You immersed yourself on the beauty in front of you. Everytime I see your video, I felt like I'm there too and Immersing myself on such beauty of nature. I appreciate you and you are the first I have subscribed in Nature Trips!!! God keep you safe 💙
Absolutely stunning ... thank you so much for sharing your adventure. I’m happy to have found your RU-vid channel, especially since Joey C doesn’t appear to be posting videos any more. Again, thank you!!
Thank you so much for this video. I haven't been able to get up there yet, this season, and your video made me feel like I was there. Glad you had a great trip!!
I have a photo from Twin Lakes taken 20 years ago when I was there with my (then) 15 year old daughter. It was mid-summer. Beautiful, almost ethereal, scene. It was like an image from a painting or fairy tale.
Very nice trip. I was hoping to go to Norway again this summer to backpack, but I don’t think it will be possible due to COVID. I might try to duplicate this trip instead.
great video. thanks for making the effort to create an index for your video it really helps. I watch your videos straight through and then rerun and take notes if I think I might want to give the trail a try. looking forward to your next video.
ERES MUY VALIENTE!!! IR SOLO POR ESTOS LUGARES DONDE PUEDE PASARTE CUALQUIER COSA.... INCLUSO LOS SASQUAD, YETI, HOMBRES MONO LOBO.... etc , etc, etc 👌👌👌
Norwegian Xplorer awesome 👏👏👏 I’ve sectioned JM did some of the passes and summit Mt. Whitney a couple of times, once the mountaineers route as well. Exhausting but worth the adventure. Best of California hiking for sure. PCT as well. Someday I hope to South bound PCT. Cheers 🍻
Nice, I have been over Forester Pass etc and Big Horn Plateau, not been to Whitney though, hoping to go sometime I can visit without going through the Whitney zone, the mountaineering route sounds like fun!
Norwegian Xplorer yeah the mountaineers route for sure you must rest up, we went from Death Valley at the lowest point to highest route, it’s a very strategic hike and takes a lot of planing for sure. Anyway, Forrester Big Horn best part of the California country. 🍻
Yes it is, I camped by Big Horn Plateau with no wind at all, stunning evening with the most amazing views! Awesome, that you went from Low to High, I think I might have watched a video of that.
