Backpacking the Scenic Eagle Rock Loop Trail - Arkansas' Longest Loop Trail

Come along for a hike of one of Arkansas' finest trails, the Eagle Rock Loop. For my adventure with ‪@HikerTrashHusbands‬ we begin at the Winding Stair Trailhead on Forest Road 106 and take the loop counterclockwise, following the Little Missouri River to the Athens-Big Fork Trail, head south over 6 Ouachita mountain ridges, then take the Viles Branch Trail east back to the truck. In all, we hiked 30 miles over 2.5 days.

This was done the last week of July in 2022. The weather was sooooo hot, but maybe we just hit the parking lot at non-peak hours.

I would love to find fossils in the layers but the geology may too old. Last year I found some nice brachiopods in the Ordivician age shales in Carter County Oklahoma.

Oh, that’s exciting! I’m glad you all will be getting out there. There’s so much to say about a trail like this. My best recommendation is to take your time and enjoy it at your own pace. It’s a trail you could do over and over and always see something new.

Watching someone hike in sandals makes my feet hurt. I know some people prefer it but then I'm the one wearing gaiters so rocks and leaves don't get in my trail runners 😂. Absolutely beautiful hike, a little on the warm side in the summer. I'd love to see it in the fall, can just imagine the colors of deciduous trees against the pines. Thanks for sharing your hike. ❤️

Yes, it’s not my thing, but Moe loves it and does well in them. I a die-hard trail runner guy myself. I do need a pair of gaitors. That’s something missing from my gear room. 😱

@@OklahomoHiker Highly recommend. I intensely dislike having to stop to get twigs, rocks, leaves outta my shoes. Helps prevent tons of dirt around the ankles too. Literally no downside to wearing gaiters. Moe does do great with the sandals, and everyone has different preferences, but yeah, that's a no from me 😂.

Moe has really mastered sandal hiking and hasn’t (knock on wood) had any sandal disasters.
