I’m 11 and I’ve been going tramping (I’m in New Zealand we call it tramping) for around a year now? My friend and her family take me. So far I’ve been to aspiring hut, Colhuons beach, falls hut on the route burn, the Brewster, Cameron valley and canyon creek! Looking forward to doing more in the future!

I love the point you made about the child carrying gear for the group making them feel like they're helping everyone. I hadn't thought of that before. Lovely POV. Will be adding a couple of group tools to my 10-year-old son's pack. :) Thanks for the wonderful video!

Its great to see others who like backpacking with their kids. We started documenting our adventures this year. When my son was 4 we started with the Osprey Jet 12 and when he turned 6 we got him the Deuter Climber 22 pack. He loves that he can carry his own sleep system (Hammock, Underquilt and top quilt).
@AdventureWidely
@AdventureWidely 3 года назад
That's awesome that he enjoys hammocking. I usually use a hammock when I rock climb, but my daughter still prefers sharing a tent.

You're most welcome. It was trial and error for my daughter and me because so few video reviews existed.

Also - it should fit your son, the pack has the adjuster to change the torso length, and for my daughter I believe she's 3 or 4 spaces up from the smallest it goes.

Super helpful! Thanks for the very experienced insight. Going out in a couple months with an 9yo friend and I'm eager to get him hooked. Great point about discomfort tolerance; I feel more confident in my estimates with your weight ratio rule (I'm shooting for no heavier than 12lbs to get him started).

Good video! My daughter is 9 and about the same size. She has a Deuter Fox 40 also and I've got her pack to about 15 lbs. She still complains about the weight. I want her to enjoy it so i was looking for more lightweight packs and sleeping bags (Her two heaviest items.) without breaking the bank. Happy Trails!
@AdventureWidely
@AdventureWidely 4 года назад
I did another review earlier this year of the Osprey Ace 50, which is quite a bit lighter than the Fox 40... I was very surprised how heavy the Fox 40 was. Now the Fox 40 is used when her friends go with us, and they don't own a pack of their own.

I just picked up an REI Kindercamp Sleeping pad (1lb 13oz, 60x20in, with a 4.5 R-value) and an off-brand compressible down puffy quilt like a Rumpl (17 oz) for my 8 y.o. niece to backpack with. This puts her sleeping system at 46oz and fits easily in the REI Tarn 18. This works until we get below upper 50°, at which point I have a 52° rated bag that’s about 19 oz and fits around system to zip in and trap the heat. I share because it took me hours to try find something lightweight, packable, would hug her petite size, AND not break the bank.

@@MsLunchTime Good finds and ideas 💡. Its too bad Mountain Hardwear discontinued the Mountain Goat the Bozeman bags - those were good bags for kids, inexpensive, and not too heavy.

@@MsLunchTime Thanks Sarah for helping out. I did get her a Sea to Summit pad that rates at 4.2 R value and weighs 21 oz. Her bag is an outdoor vitals 35deg bag that weighs 39 oz but i just got her an aegismax down back that rates at 50 deg and is 16 oz. I also ended up getting her an osprey sirrus 36 xs for a pack... so i kinda ended up breaking the bank!! :-(

Adventure Widely As the Adventure Aunt who lives in the Pacific Northwest, I try to have gear ready for when the nieces & nephews visit from the Midwest so they don’t have to lug things extra things when they travel. Anything that can have dual purposes for the older ones or adult guests is a huge plus. Bummer about the Bozeman - looks like it would really be customizable to size 😕 But on the plus side - I can see the down blanket getting a lot of use by me on my winter trips this year! Dirt & sand just shake off and it repels water pretty well for the drizzle out here.

The load lifters seem to operate at about correct angle (45 degree) when your daughter has the backpack on. Is this with the shoulder harness in the lowest position? It seem most (children) backpacks have way too short distance between waist belt and load-lifter fixation point for the load-liters to operate correctly. It is strange that so many manufacture completely disregard such vital feature of the carry system, even if every backpack fitting guide agree on that load-lifters should be at a 45 degree angle.
@AdventureWidely
@AdventureWidely 5 лет назад
The backpack is not at the lowest setting. If I recall correctly, it has 2 or 3 more positions on the shoulder suspension to extend yet. I would guess that this pack butts right up against a woman's size small pack for torso length when it's fully extended.
@mikemikemyday8241
@mikemikemyday8241 5 лет назад
@@AdventureWidely Anyhow after much research Deuter Fox 40 and Osprey ACE 50 was on the shortlist. Fortunately a local retailer close by had both in stock and it didn't take many minutes with 8kg load for my daughter to conclude that she didn't like the Osprey carry system and absolutely loved the feel of the Fox 40. Simple as that! ;-)
@mikemikemyday8241
@mikemikemyday8241 5 лет назад
@@AdventureWidely Additionally I could confirm that the load-lifters operate correct since shoulder harness is set for short child torso length while load-lifters are attached on same height as on same size adult bags. So while the load-lifters are too low for adult torso on the Deuter 30-50l adult bags, they are still working correctly on the same volume kids bags.

What was the backpack you first began using for her?
@AdventureWidely
@AdventureWidely 3 года назад
The first pack was that REI Tarn 18. No hip belt or support, but for carrying 5 lbs of stuff at her small age, it was all she needed. The first real backpack was the Deuter Fox 40. Not a bad pack, but its heavy, and is missing loops to properly carry a pad. Now she's using an Osprey Ace 50, and that pack is an all around great pack for her. Thanks for watching!

You dont have her carry her own clothes? planning to go out with my kids for the first time, my daughter is 11. My wife and I are 100 mile runners so our kids are used to being outdoors, but not backpacking. I was thinking of having her carry her own clothes and I'd carry her sleeping bag. Do you suggest one over the other? Our first trip is only an overnight with 3 mile hike out.
@AdventureWidely
@AdventureWidely 4 года назад
Thanks for watching! At 11 (her age now), I do have her carry quite a bit of stuff, keeping in mind the 25% rule: 25% of her bodyweight is the maximum weight on her back. When I made this video, her size and her pack size were both smaller, so she was limited in space. Typically though, we don't carry much in the way of a change of clothes. We'll carry layers so we're comfortable in a wide range of temperatures, but we won't bring extra pants. If we're out several days, we may bring an extra shirt, but we usually wear wool tshirts to cut down on odor. We'll carry 3 pairs of socks though - one to alternate every day, and a dedicated pair to sleep in.

My son is 6. He carries his own clothing, his own bag, his own pad, his own full water bottles. I haven’t weighed his full pack, but I’d never dream of having him carrying anything less.

Nice video, except for one thing…no one says 25% of a child’s weight. Most I’ve seen for a max percentage of body weight is 15%, with recommendations to be closer to 10%. So a 50lb kid should be carrying 5lbs, with a max of 7.5lbs. Obviously “child” is subjective as a 16 year old 150lb child should be able to carry more than 15lbs. But 10% is probably a good rule for prepubescent children.
@AdventureWidely
@AdventureWidely 6 месяцев назад
I did a little bit of googling, and found a myriad of answers as to what percentage was appropriate. I think the recommend weights have changed over the years. The Boy Scouts pack weight from the 1950s is vastly different from what they carry today. I do think the recommendations from the big outdoor retailers of the "low" 20% pack weight for adults is to simply push people into buying more expensive, ultra light gear. I will admit that the lower the weight on your back, the more you'll probably enjoy your trip. Thanks for watching.
