Welcome back to the channel for another amazing episode! This is a trip I've been wanting to do for over a year so I'm very excited to share the experience with you! Grayson Highlands is a very scenic state park in Virginia that the Appalachian Trail runs through. The area is known for its herds of wild ponies that inhabit the area. Along with the horses, backpackers can also see other wildlife in the form of whitetail deer and longhorn cattle.
We knew going into this trip that our weather forecast was abysmal, but we decided to make the six-hour drive from Ohio anyhow. We abandoned our local 80-degree weather in exchange for wind, rain and temperatures in the 40's and 50's. I've postponed trips to Grayson Highlands before due to weather conditions and I wasn't about to do it again.
Upon our arrival, we had decent enough weather to take in some views along the highlands section of the trail and ran into a herd of wild ponies. Day one we covered about nine miles total, including a summit of Mt Rogers, the highest peak in the state of Virginia. We backtracked our way towards an AT shelter and made camp for the night. The last few hours of the day saw the temperature drop about ten degrees and the rain, wind and fog began hammering us.
Upon waking for day two, we realized what sort of weather we were in for. We trekked through the highlands most of day two, but unfortunately our visibility was severely limited. We were lucky enough to stumble upon another herd of wild horses and saw quite a few longhorn cattle along the way. The rain hammered us nonstop for the entire day, I think there was only one 5-10 minute grace period where the rain didn't persist. Bryon, Sara and I were all wearing Frogg Toggs rain gear and it completed wetted out sometime around 1-2pm leaving us drenched the rest of the day.
Our vital gear, shelters, sleep system, base layers etc all remained dry in our packs but we made the decision to not camp the second night and just hike out the four remaining miles day two. I wish we could have stayed a second night, but being so close to the end of the trail and being soaked for hours, we decided to just head home. I can't wait to get back out to this section of the Appalachian Trail in the future when the weather is better. It is a great stretch of trail to hike and I'll be backpacking it again in the future for sure!

I still had fun. If I had the choice I’d take better weather obviously but I didn’t hate it even though I was waterlogged lol

It ranks as one of my favorite trails so far. Will return. Although I’m not sure I’ve ever better as wet and cold at the same time before.

Type 2 fun! That is an enjoyable and normally easy place to backpack. The full loop through the area reminds me of Dolly Sods in its diversity.

Dude the microphone issues with 24 straight hours of rain was driving me crazy lol. I hate being stuck with the onboard mic but didn’t have a choice. It’s an awesome place to backpack, can’t wait to get back there with nice weather.

Sometimes the weather just doesn't want to give a person a break. Great video even with the rain. I enjoyed seeing the horses. They are beautiful. As a retired horse shoer, I was surprised to see how cared for their feet appeared. I didn't expect that on horses running loose in the mountains. They also looked well-groomed and well fed. I bet they are happy with their home. Good call getting out of that rain. Were you able to keep your sleeping pads dry while hiking? I used a Therma-Rest pad that fit in my pack, but I see a lot of people in RU-vid videos with their sleeping pads uncovered while on the outside of their packs. I always carried an extra trash bag to put my sleeping bag in if it rained. It is synthetic and took up too much room in my pack. Happy Trails!

There’s an organization that keeps watch over the ponies. Once per year they check them for diseases and take some of them to auction to control the population. Other than the annual checkup they are completely wild to my understanding. All of my sleeping gear stayed dry and I had a dry base layer in my pack. We could have stayed the second night and been fine, but we were soaked and tired and only had about 4 miles left to hike out so we opted to finish it the second day rather than staying. Sara freezes so she had two pads, the foam thermarest outside the pack and an inflatable Nemo Tensor inside the pack that stayed dry. Her quilt was dry and she had a dry base layer as well. Again, we COULD have stayed but opted not to.

@@Bacon_N_Backpacking lol that and you say ok a lot in a lot of your videos. But hey I still watch em and enjoy em. You make great content and take fun trips. Next time you do a meet n greet type trip I hope to hear about it before it’s too late. The dolly sods trip looked fun. It’s my favorite place to backpack.

Well to be honest, it took many hours and the part of my legs that were exposed were fine. The jacket really failed me. The 80 degrees and sun back home probably played a role in it as well.
