BACKSCENES USING FORCED PERSPECTIVE - ON MY MODEL RAILWAY
Looking to create a feeling of depth and distance on your layout. Forced perspective maybe the way forward. At the least you could use smaller scale buildings in the distance.
In this video l:
- Explain what forced perspective is.
- Demonstrate through factory build and other parts how forced perspective can be used.
- Give brief explanation of the new area and plans.

A great video John, not only because it provides us with an update of progress on the layout but also due to it being an excellent tutorial. Thanks very much indeed. Thanks Ian, I am having to space out the videos abit as Ive got some special vids I might have to do, but got to start work soon and time will be dramatically reduced. So I saying one video on either channel, 1 or the other, poss two if i can manage it.

Thanks Gordon, I did have a drawing section to the video in the original version, but it was not well received so I removed it. I do think the explanation of the perspective was compromised but glad it was helpful

Hi John , Ah now that is clever . Linking the two sections ( New Mills and Picadilly !!! ) Must admit though i never have noticed that there is a Drop from the station at New mills . I have noticed loads of mills round that area and canals . I do like the idea of forced perspective . Take care bud see you same time next week !

Thanks Clint. As long as the edges that go away from you, into the distance, go to the same vanishing point it should look great. Ive got some relief office blocks so will do more in the next video. I agree, as someone said model railways is a bit like a 3D painting.

Hi John, Cheers for all your efforts to get viewers on my stream last night I have also thanked both Allan and Rachel and I was only sorry that if you thought the layout was looking a bit dark that was some idiot (me) forgot to turn the rest of the lights on so only 1 florescent one doing all that layout reminded me of a bad DAVESTRAINS video but stream still seemed to go well, as for this video as I have said before you are setting new standards for backscenes and flat for proper modelers will now never be flat so looking forward to seeing you continue with it and seeing the super final creation as always keep well and safe. Thanks Robert, Always pleased to help and think the stream last night had your highest number of people so far, good for you. That was partly as you chose Sunday evening, great time to stream, Friday evenings also, but latter is very popular. Dark, no, we would have said honestly. Lighting was fine. Bound to get someone who’s not happy, but all went very well. You might want to think about 2-3 people to be moderators as they will look out for trolls and those trying to disrupt, then report / remove them.

Thankyou Robert I wasnt asking, but am happy to do it for you, its just you cant do everything and run the stream, your trains and chat too. Not sure whether you can see chat from the last stream or whether you have to do it in the next, but click on the name and there should be an option to make a moderator. They have ‘administrator’ rights to ‘police’ the chat just incase, a regular visitor cannot delete comments or eject troublemakers etc. Everything is fine most of the time but best be prepared.

Ahhhhh bless you Wendy thankyou. Yes I do enjoy Paul’s painting streams, and now we are having fun along the way too. I’m guessing people there actually visit the gallery and partake in painting lessons. Do you post your paintings on line, I’d love to see, I do more model making these days, but very occasionally may actually produce a painting.

Hello John, my father was an instrumentation design specialist for Lockheed, hence s huge background as a draughtsman. My mother was an artist. Her favorite medium was oil paint. So.....I understand vanishing lines and forced perspective. They are wonderful helpers when drawing/painting/modeling. But, forced perspective can get tricky if it’s off even just a little. John you did a great job in your explanation. I look forward to your next episode. See ya.

I do not see a lot of videos about forced perspective in model railroading, but it could be a huge part of our builds. I am thinking about picking up some Z scale trains that match one of my N scale trains. I want the N scale to go into a tunnel and have the same train in Z scale com out, so it looks much further away.

I do enjoy watching your artistic approach to modelling. Basically as modellers we’re ‘painting’ in 3D so many of the same principles apply. As someone currently doing an arts degree this is all fascinating stuff. 👍🏻

Thank you, yes the bell does help, but still no guarantees, YT technology is sadly not perfect. Tricky? Maybe. Annoying? It depends on the person I quite enjoyed doing it.

It works when you got buildings going away from you and you can see the side. Follow these lines on couple of buildings which will give you a rough idea where vanishing point is. Alternatively simply place smaller buildings, figures, vehicles towards the back

Hi Paul, it depends on the back scene chosen. Most printers use ‘straight on’ images where you can’t really see sides of buildings. However if the sides are obvious our relief buildings should follow otherwise they look odd. I’ll show more when I make the office blocks

Hi John, Loving how the back scenery is coming along and the persective tricks you are using. There is a real feel of depth and character to area, not to mention that the factory building you were working on looks far better than the enbankment that was there. I love the idea of the canal as well! that would provide another point of interest and something typical of the area. I think this could be another great scene on Piccadilly.
