I love the part where it shows the contrasts between the girls working out in the hotel and the people in the villages and slums working their behinds off just to survive.
She really must have had no concept about how big this video would be. 😂I hope this is just a moment in her life but man does she have to live with it. Poor girl.
Just observe Neha's dedication.. No toxication, no boyfriend tantrums, no bitching, being confident, waking up everyday on time and no bitching around.. Completely focused. I did not like her till date, but now I'm appreciative about her dedication..
the girl who spoke about virginity was way ahead and was true and honest with her thoughts and that made sense, Sonal couldn't answer single parent question is because she had this in her mind that virginity is important and somewhere it gives away that she doesn't understand the concept of single parenting and couldn't state on why and how it is okay to be single parent.
The right girl one. I was totally rooting for Neha. She was disciplined, and took the course very seriously. She gave it her all. She worked out the most. She did not drink. She did not smoke. She did not focus on a boyfriend. She was completely dedicated. Medha was a gossipy, self centered brat. Sonal was too insecure, unassertive, and not sharp enough with questions. She came off as weak and timid. They were all beautiful, but they were not all strong polished confident women. Neha was.
Omg, this broke my heart. The one girl outside saying “im already brown!” Like it was a bad thing, I truly do not see why? She is so beautiful, why does society makes these beautiful women have to feel like they can’t be too dark?!?
@@Elizabeth-uj8vn well white skin and lightskin run the world. I'm neither light or dark skinned I'm mid way brown and I just accept the way it is. I put up with abuse from white, and lightskinned and dark skinned. To the whites and lightskinned I'm dark skinned, to the dark skinned I'm light skinned and get abuse from 3 angles. I can't stand any of them. But white is deemed beautiful and I accept the way it is. It cannot be changed
Its good miss india and miss world threw swim wear and evening gown round out of their shows we are heading towards better, hopefully miss universe follows
People often talk as if 'changing yourself' is a bad thing. It is not. Changing yourself into something you don't want to be (that is not authentic) is a bad thing, yes. But improving yourself, and becoming who you always wanted to be (so it is an authentic change) can be very positive. You will be happier, healthier, and more succesful in life. People are born with certain tendencies and features, but everyone is shaped by how their personality traits interact with the world around them. This also means that everyone have the ability to choose a specific direction in life if they want. Being a beauty queen is as much a skillset that is learned, as it is features you are born with. No-one is born with these skills; they might have a 'talent' compared to some other people, or have been shaped by their environment/learned some of the skills. But just because you didn't learn these things as a child, it doesn't mean you can't aspire to learn them, or shape yourself to be more that way. As long as it is a change that YOU desire, it is a positive one, because you are becoming a better version of yourself. :)
The only thing that bothers me about these contests is the immense focus on outer beauty and “perfection”. There’s no one body type which is perfect or healthy. They portray a false and unhealthy body as perfect. This is bad for all of us.
This documentary must be from late 1990's/early 2000's. Most of the models here have been in Bollywood movies during 2000's/early 2010's from what I remember. So young and so innocent. Time flies!
Neha dhupia was top 10 in miss universe and made a decent career in bollywood she still appears on tv shows and looks the same, Gauhar khan is also a recongnised celebrity. The only two still relevant.
I love that the two models that Medha names as having social issues (too religious and not hanging out with them) are the ones who go on to have successful careers and becoming great bollywood actresses...Neha Dhupia and Gauhar Khan. Drama will get you nowhere!
So let me get this straight, your telling them to lose weight , encouraging them to botex etc but yet trying to tell themselves they love themselves and accept themselves ! Very confusing and messed up
Stephanie Salazar I think the thing is, they know that what they’re doing it is going to mess up the girls so they need a psychologist to minimise that (not saying I agree with the industry or what they’re doing, but I think this is why)
Ms. Steph I wish I could push the thumbs up button on your comment 1000x's Don't know how old you are, but I'm so proud of you for recognizing that and I need you to show this to your young and older friends and share your comment after they've watched this video and see how many of them caught what you realized about this whole disturbing video. YOUR AWARENESS ROCKS! Tell them I said so!
@ Lisa, Well, you are another kind of people if you think hating yourself and not taking care of yourself can meen being proud!! ( I hate the fake proudness ), I would recomend you to be active in live and take care of yourself then you have what you call being proud.
The fact is because of that attitude nobody knows who medha is today but the girl she mocked is Gauhar Khan and is somewhat well known in the television industry.
I just love how Neha carries herself and how humble she is, the fact that she’s gorgeous is also a plus. I’m glad that she won cuz she truly deserves it.
@Eri Jane umm. Are you saying that everyone who's dark is old? and hairless people are youthful? lmao hairless people are usually old or really really young kids. You want to know what really signals an age of fertility ? Hair. Stop with the "nature" argument. Smh my head I hate colorists.
@Eri Jane usually east asian women are the ones who grow very little hair. In fact, in europe body hair is not demonized and women shaving their legs is not normal like in other countries. I studied abroad in Italy and it was so difficult to find hair remover.
Well I love myself but maintaining beauty is recognizing faults and fixing it. I don’t like getting dark and I am too hairy. To say there is nothing to fix would be a lie. If let my hair grow I would look un feminine and gross.
This captures Indian culture so so well. Not just that but the feeling of having dreams and there being only one winner. It shows how similar and how different we are. It's also interesting to see the juxtaposition of these pageant queens and others in society who are not lucky enough to perhaps follow their dreams.
The trainer said parents should be happy with dark skinned children and dark women can be beautiful which is true, but I notice all the contestants are light skinned. What a pity.
You know what the "pity" is? That women are judged like MEAT, like they were during the days of slave sales. This is NO DIFFERENT than that. It's all disgusting. But you're offended by the fact that the MEAT that is on the market is not as dark as you'd like. Get out.
Bruh, I think your perception of Indians is incredibly distorted by the Western Media. Indians are a highly mixed race. We have Roman, Mongolian, Dravidian, Aryan, African and many more Ethnicities mixed within us. A lot of people in India are Moderate, or Light Skinned. And it's a natural Skin Tone. However, I'd still say that a large part of Indians do have Dark Complexions. It isn't about Skin Colour, it's mostly about background. Most (if not all) of these women come from Middle Class, to Upper Class Families living in Metropolitan Cities. Fashion Industry was still looked a bit down upon. Priyanka Chopra (Miss World 2000) who went on to become an extremely talented and successful actress cane from a Middle Class Family. Her father was a Doctor, and Mother is a Pediatrician. She wasn't exactly Rags to Riches, but yeah. She has seen a lot of Financial Advances through her Career. Earlier than her, it was Aishwarya Rai, who won Miss World in 1994. She was a South Indian, and her skin was of Lighter complexion. I still consider her the prettiest woman on the planet (regardless of Skin Colour). The biggest was definitely Sushmita Sen. She won Miss Universe 1994 (at the age of 18). She was the first Indian Woman to win the title. And she's the wisest Celebrity I've known. She had a considerably Darker complexion (compared to her runner ups). So yeah. It's just about that. A lot of Indians have a wheatish Complexion (which is moderate). Most of these Fine Women fall into that Category. And please realize, this was almost 20 years ago. A lot has changed since then, and there's even more Diversity.
From Kenya....colourism is everywhere...while watching this video,i looked through one of our local magazines and all the models in all the adverts were light skinned.most of our tv achchors are also fair skinned.however in African countries like Uganda and Rwanda they do promote darker skin models in their media adverts.......i think this is mainly due to the colonial hangover that .....white is right...quite sad!!!
I'm Indian and its the same. Even in the this comment section you can see that outsiders do not know that Indians can have really dark skin. people are saying they don't see a color bias in these pageants as everyone is "a normal brown Indian color" . But oh, if only these people knew that there are people much darker than this in India , its just that: All the actors in films are light All the contestants in pageants that go to international competitions are light because *they have been selected from many in India, and of course the Indian judges would eliminate the darker people*
@@theturniptress805 - I noticed early on that most of the girls were the same fair skin. Of course, I already knew that India was a very colorist society.
@@faithgoga3983 I used to date a dark skinned beautiful lady.I took out my friend and his girlfriend for an outing.his girlfriend asked me.... You are quite eligible so how can you date such a black lady.....!!
If Medha focused on bettering herself rather than bitching about others she would at least achieve something in this contest. Sonal was always nervous. Neha had what it takes. This isn’t just about beauty. You need to have a personality and have great answers to the questions also.
Esp when more ppl make fun of Indian accent else where in the world... Indians are pretty racist actually, you should look up what Gandhi thought of black ppl...
@@blt171 I don't think so... well where I live we don't care if you black white brown or you are even burned if you are a bitvh no one's gonna be with you...
I've seen a documentary here on RU-vid where Indians put the Siddi people (black Indian people) in "human zoos." This is Something that racist white people did to both Africans and Asians in the 19th-20th century. India is in to this stuff today... I'm not saying every Indian is racist cuz racism is taught. I'm just saying they teach racism there for sure. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of other countries in the same boat, it's a big boat.
@@palladium607 I don't think so: if you don't understand the difference between understanding racial history and being racist, then you are not very intelligent. I'm saying there are deep cultural racial problems on a massive scale in countries like India, Vietnam, Maylasia. Why do those countries bleach their skin the most? ESP India? Is it classism? colonialism? Or like both and most ppl are brainwashed? Not everything is easy to understand and black and white, use your brain, don't be stupid forever.
Wow so many famous actors from 2002 contestants: 1. Neha Dhupia - won the title and popular BW actress 2. Guahaar Khan - popular BW actress and won Bigg Boss 3. Sonal Pendse - starred in 2002 popular show of the year - Kyun Hota Hai Pyarr 4. Reshmi Ghosh - starred in Kyunki Saas bhi kabhi bahu thi and then several Ekta Kapoor shows
People are saying that these women are average-looking. That's true. But, even girls in pageants in the west(UK, USA, Sweden, Germany) are very average. With makeup and lighting, they turn into goddeses.
I agree, and I find funny the response of people who are offended by comments like these. They say the video is old. And? With time people become more beautiful. In 16 17 18 years the Indian features have changed so dramatically? These girls are beautiful like millions of others.
Personally, I think that plastic surgery and makeup should disqualify you from a beauty pageant. Especially the heavy makeup like eyeliner and eyeshadow and contouring makeup. That should completely disqualify you, because it changes your looks. They should judge you based on your NATURAL beauty and that's it!
Well, it was almost 20 years ago. I don't know if you're refering only to the beauty pageants (which in my country have practically disappeared from the mainstream in this time), but I do think some stuff has been improved thanks to feminism, while other stuff has gotten worse because of social media and online fake perfection. In any case, things have changed quite a lot.
I had an Indian classmate once. She was very beautiful and her name was Deepika Sharma. What made her more beautiful was her nice and friendly.personality.
The muslim girl who said it's unfair that women are expected to be virgins as opposed to men is my heroShe & Sonal were by far the most beautiful, inside and out.
I really respect their approach! Of course they're trying to bring the girls as close as possible to a (questionable) beauty standard, but they're not being cruel or disrespectful to them, and the fact that they have a psychologist helping them love themselves is really admirable! Seems like they want them to succeed and but try to support their mental health as well
The truth is Cosmetic Companies wanted to open a new market, the largest market in the world. Lorea'l, Garnier, Nivea earning billions from Indian market. Fairness cream market is a cancer.
This does not only happen in India but is also widespread in most countries. Because of this, it took many years for some people (maybe both men and women) to accept themselves. They tend to nitpick flaws so well that they have forgotten their worth. And that's sad.
Dear Amit,it is very true ,but Indian society unfortunately do not care reality ,thay want only fair looking people.I am European and just laughing how stupid world is here in Mumbai! Did you ever seen a Bollywood Film with a dark skinned girl as a main hero? Shamfull!
if i discovered that the man i love is a criminal, i would separate myself from him and try to reinvent myself so i am able to make better choices in future.
This was a very small glimpse at this level of pageantry. I've held a state title for both American & an International pageants. The stress & fatigue is overwhelming. The rules forbid one to smoke or drink at any time. The activity schedule is packed from early morning into evening hours. We did not have any down time like these girls. It was a luxury to squeeze in some sleep. It was not an 8 hr sleep either. I enjoyed my pageant events, however, people do not realize how daunting it can be. You are watched & scrutinized during the whole process. This plays a huge role of who ends up on stage finale night.
I’m very proud and actually happy Neha won because she was so dedicated and focused and believed in herself she was actually quite inspiring because she achieved her goals by hard work - amazing
At 30:00 when Medha calls Neha and Gauhar Ice Vaginas.. I burst into a chuckle. Is it surprising that the 2 women everyone claims didn't mingle and focused entirely on the contest are the 2 most recognisable faces in this entire series and seem to have a career we can recall that goes beyond this pageant.
When she was the first to walk on the stage as it was being built she looked so confident without being brash. She looked just like the Statue of Liberty.
Personally I think the pageant people intended on Neha winning because she was so focus and basically kept to herself. That’s why she was always walking on her own and basically made the face of the show.
Miss India organisation has improved a lot over the years . You can clearly see there was no northeast contestant while now the north east states government put a genuine effort in their grooming and stuff . Beauty with a purpose carries A LOT importance. The only thing that bothers me is that they now make Bollywood actors the final judges. Miss India 2020 runner-up Manya Singh has my mad respect. In 2017 manushi chillar brought miss world crown to India after 17 years , last time it was Priyanka Chopra.
I agree, and I find funny the response of people who are offended by comments like these. They say the video is old. And? With time people become more beautiful. In 16 17 18 years the Indian features have changed so dramatically? These girls are beautiful like millions of others.
But they meet the height requirement. Plus I read in a study that the majority of tall people think of themselves as better-looking that they really are. In the study, most small people thought of themselves as average-looking or ugly.
None of those million girls can handle pressure like miss india competition.. In beauty parent confidence completes girl's beauty. So 28girls in the video are so apt to fit in this competition
The fact that Gauhar did something in life tho she didn't won and none knows about this girl medha or whatever her name is amazing also Neha won because she was determined, hardworking and dedicated, not partying and making friends and fighting boyfriends over phone.
@@pint5266 practicing her religion in private doesn't make Gauhar religious fanatic but telling the word "Om" belongs to every religion does surely makes medha a religious fanatic.

cc jammy dont mind them. This is a very old video. And to be honest india was a society where only fair girls were preferable. But now 2018 is not the case. So many dark models and actorsses are comin out...people are now more into accepting their skin types.
Things have changed darling and they are changing.....its 2018 now...please don't mind... actually i also think its so ironical that they want all of then to fit certaing beauty standards and then also to embrace their imperfections...

The first girl is not how pageant ladies act. I’ve been a state title winner and won over 50 pageants. The girls are very professional and friendly. We help one another and support each other. Ladies who act like the first girl never win and give up after a few pageants because the word gets around with judges of these.
When it comes to beauty pageants, I appreciate everyone's beauty physically and their confidence to be criticized. People in the comments acting like they're in the right place to judge when yall probably didn't even shower today. Who cares about race. Women everywhere are beautiful 💅
I recognise some girls from this video as I am seeing this video in 2020 - 1. Neha Dhupia the winner is a judge in Roadies now. 2. Gauhar Khan the Muslim girl has participated in big boss and even appeared in films. 3. Malaika Arora the host of Miss India competition is a judge in reality shows that choose a supermodel from many models around the India and is also an actress
Neha was extremely dedicated & deserved it. But just based on my heart, I found Sonal so beautiful, down to earth & charming. I like that she represents a modern girl in her frankness & wanting to have fun & go with the flow, she's confident but she still gets nervous or flustered sometimes & that's relatable. I love how her crooked side smile gives her a unique feature that's memorable & charming. She's cool & reserved. She's hot & cute at the same time. Idk I liked her sm!
It was nice to see one girl telling the other girl to stfu when she was ranting about virginity. She was protecting her for decades down the road. Good friend!
The way they were paraded in bikinis in front of men and actors is just so so so disgusting. The moment John Abraham bit his bottom lip and gave Neha the gross pervy smile just urgh 🤬🤢🤮
Tee Me Omg I thought the same too?! I wonder if he was with Bipasha at that time? I have seen John in real life when I was cabin crew for Emirates and he flew first class
Wow.. Didn't realize that parading infront of the judges who stare you up and down with those vulture eyes..would be soo embarrassing.. God. I even feel violated by the way the male judges are looking at them..absolutely disgusting..
Why? No different than any audition or modeling contest. Women are free to do what they want with their bodies. If it’s not for you, then don’t enter. Others are free to do as they please.

Sunny.bias her attitude UGH! It felt she only wanted the title so it would prove to her that she was pretty, but all she had to do was look in the mirror and believe (not lie in a mirror) truly believe that she was beautiful and no sash in the world could be big enough, shiny enough, or special enough sould be able to get her to believe otherwise. The same people that you look to validate you, as you saw in the video, will be the same people to vote you off the island and tell you NOPE sorry you weren't as pretty as we said you were. Now what?
one thing I learned from this video is no matter how pretty you look if your brain is empty or if you lack self confidence that's it you are out of the track.
Neha really proved to me that focus persistence discipline these are the actually qualities that helps you achieve and everything else is just excuses. I really wish I had that mindset as a teenager
I was a gov't hand assisting an international pageant held in my country some years ago. I told my friends I know the top 5 who'll make it just hours before the winners were announced. It'a all fixed.
MICKIE Carreon my boyfriend thought that also, then he "seen" my heart. He said after he got to know me he understands me and not my habbit. Sure I want to quit, but its hard.
This season of Miss India is more than 10 years old. Few of the contestants including the winner are actually doing really good in the film industry. Why are they showing this season now. So much has changed ever since. The controversy over the bikini round isn't there anymore. So much has changed. Infact what they were saying that few years later there'd be so many competitions and winners that noone will be interested in knowing all of that, has actually come true now.
Lol.. the blabbermouth Medha criticizing Gauhar khan.. who is Medha now?? And look at Gauhar's and Neha's successful career now. It proves the obvious one doesn't need to blabber so much if they are deserving..
Howl What that is true...I've been truly rude to in ways..as a child...by adults....I know how my feelings would be hurt...so I strive to be kind to others..or walk away if I can....but being nasty to ppl cause you think it's your right...even when corrected you continue...that is what I meant...there is no reason for willful rude behavior..as for mean if I said something and saw i had hurt the other...i am quick to apologize....i never look for a chance to be rude.
Ok...but Ive been in their position attracting lots of fake people who only like you for your looks and forced friendships and stalkers etc. You really cant be nice to men at all or they sexually assault and claim you expressed interest in them because you smiled
I love this RU-vid channel. It allows to take a glimpse to different people/countries/cultures. Which is really very entertaining and sometimes even shocking
To all people watching this......pageantry has undergone amazing changes worldwide in the last decade....and so has things changed in India as well....u r watching only a side of what the documentary wants to show....there were amazing girls in that batch of 2002....the winner Neha dhupia is an actress and tv host..she's also a mentor for girls who are competing now...
I think you can have a very personal and close relationship with God, and still participate in competitions like this. At the end of the day, it's up to God to judge
40:44 --> Neha is crying right after she said she is not nervous???? Btw, this was so much fun! Learnt a lot from Neha's discipline and what not to do from Medha's banter... but to all those who are hating on Medha, if she wasn't talking then this documentary wouldn't be half as interesting!
I miss the early 00's...everyone is getting so upset in the comments when this is clearly 10 or 15 yrs old based on the clothes alone. "My boyfriend broke the CD's" is the clue lol
Miss india has improved alot we had maney northeast Indian beauties who represented us in Miss international etc and recently dark skinned miss india Manya singh skinny Adline castelino Harnaz with Celic desiese
