oh shit! my campaign! Haven't finished watching it all but I did send some context in the email which I haven't heard mentioned yet. I was playing this a few months ago now so I don't remember everything perfectly but... I wasn't trying to turtle at the start but Parthia, having its own horse archers, caused me a fair few casualties. After I took Susa a rebel army with a general in it besieged Artaxarta and with only peasants in there I lost my captial to rebels D=. I tried to take it back too early and that same general unit slaughtered many a eastern infantry and some horse archers. Finally got it back after forever when pontus stabbed in the back and besieged Kotais. Meanwhile I had taken Seleucia but stupidly went for Dumatha before I continued to push west. I took it from the rebels but as soon as my army left Egypt showed up and took it from me. I was pretty salty at this point and as I went for Hatra the Seleucids bribed Seleucia off me >:( My army got pretty rekt on its way back by an army with some elephants and then I had to save Susa from egyptians. My expedition north to turn back the pontics encountered a stack and a half with plenty of chariots that wouldnt quit holding each other's dicks so I eventually got frustrated and fought them on the field. I won but my army was decimated. had to run back to susa. Bunch of assassins from the Seleucids and egyptians showed up so I hired my own to kill theirs since my youngest family member had -2 to personal security or something. I was pretty frustrated and ready to give up, being in debt and unable to leave susa without it coming under siege again. Then I found this channel doing these disaster campaigns >=D. Can't wait to make any Seleucids, Egyptians and Pontics Legend doesn't kill suffer the most horrible deaths! Thanks Legend! edit: I also lost several generals to elephants and chariots. Including one where my general was crushed by a routing elephant just like Legend talks about 17:20 . Man I was so angry lol

I stopped watching your channel for a while, but man this series got me hooked back in. Such a good original idea, and always a different situation

My first non-Roman campaign for this was as Parthia, which is nearly identical to playing as Armenia. Basically had the same thing happening, sandwiched between Egypt and Pontus and constantly under siege. Could win 100 defensive victories without achieving anything. It's really tough to play these factions initially, because unlike on the Italian peninsula your starting territories make bugger all money. The other disadvantage is that you have a vast desert between you and the the major cities of the Near East. If Egypt in particular comes after you you're boxed right in, and thanks to the tyranny of distance and a weak economy it's so hard to take the fight to them. As Parthia or Armenia you really need to blitz the first ten turns, or else you're screwed.

This is extraordinary Legend. Brilliant.

I find that going after Parthia as a first move as Armenia is not the play, having played a few campaigns as Armenia. Just remarking as I see this disaster campaign. Reminds me of my first one with Armenia. Debt issues, Egypt gets too strong and you have a hard time controlling them with a large amount of full stacks coming your way. Pontus gets too strong at that point, having most of or all of Anatolia by the time you get around to them. The better play is to hit the Seleucids or Pontus when they are weak. If you hit the Seleucids right out of the gate, you could take Hatra, Antioch, and Tarsus in that order in 10 turns. You could probably eliminate Pontus in the same amount of time (maybe, you would have to build a port in Kotais and then build a ship, but a stables (I forget if it has one or not at the start) is the most practical building you can build early on. I don't concern myself with Parthia until I've mostly neutralized the Seleucids.

Also a thing you can do with catas vs chariots; if you box the cataprachts (as in stack them right ontop of eahcother) and put them in D stance they will crush scythed chariots even while being outnumbered. No room for the chariots to move in between the unit (chariots only attacks from the sides) so they cant really hurt you. Slightly cheesy and highly immobile, so has limited use; but remains quite effecive. That or just break their morale early ( as in charge in from the sides). Wedge helps quite abit at that in r1 esspecially when you have lots of cavalry and are taking on infantry; (wedge + charge a unit behind the unit in the front is very much a thing; so you charge attack but through other units, and have the cav charge all the way).

I should also add if you do decide to "bum rush" the Seleucids, you can create quite the economy for yourself early on that otherwise Armenia might not enjoy so much in the early game, which is your biggest weakness as Armenia or Parthia in the early game. IMO it is the best play to do that if you know how to use Horse Archers well (you won't get Cat Archers, which are worth the expense, until you take Antioch, which {Cat Archers} are significantly better than anything else you have once you are able to get them, essentially Eastern Archers on Horseback that are even more ludicrously Armoured). You'll have to wrestle the Egyptian bull afterwards, but they won't be as powerful (once you clear out their initial stacks, then they are pretty much on the defensive). Try to minimize the weaknesses over maximizing the strengths and that is a great idea for the long term. (Just remarking, I'm sure Legend knows this :) I'm just a mark for Armenia, my favorite faction in vanilla Rome Total War. I love amassing late game armies with 10-14 Cat Archers in them and the rest being a general or two and or 4-6 Cat Lancers. You will be untouchable once you get to that point. Post Marian Rome? No problem, your infantry is far better than Parthia's in the late game.

Crazy. Just finished my own campaign as Armenia. I actually started it ages ago, but it started to go south and I stopped playing it. This is easily how my campaign could have ended up. Really fun and interesting faction (Love cataphract archers), but their starting location is awful, and you kinda need to break out fast or else you get sandwiched between the Seleucids, who have better infantry, and the Pontics and Scythians, who have better early-game cavalry.

Why don't you try making the elephants miss by moving the units of cavalry around? I don't remember arrows in Rome 1 auto-hitting, so that should reduce casualties.

Legend Eastern infantry are actually quite good against elephants and horsemen provided you can control for their terrible morale. If you keep them in the town square of the forts and manually fight the battle you'd have a good chance of winning it

For constructive criticism, your heavy spears would've destroyed the elephants since they're technically cavalry. But it's all good 👍

Those armenian pikes are utter shit, in addition to being short pikes they are actually light weapond type; meaning all heavy weapond types get an attack bonus against them. So Levy pikes (while way cheaper and having much worse stats) crush them with longer pikes + heavy attack 1 on 1. Still can be rather useful to deter you being rushed in the rare moments where your catas are not enough (chariot factions/ scythia usually).

Why would you recruit horse archers over cataphract horse archers ? They are better everywhere but for the speed and youre not really using the average horse archers to moove that fast

why didnt you use the peasants as cannon fodder in those first 2 sieges? Sure its men but they are only good for 2 things, garrisoning and taking arrows. Also, why not just let the elephants rout/go insane and wait to get some jav cav or better horse archers? You'll end up whittling them down anyway in the process and brake the siege sooner.

Got to be honest. I struggle to enjoy the older pre-shogun 2 TW battles because of how unbelievably dumb the AI is. I mean look at this first battle. AI with a massive number of pikeman runs away from just 3 units of cavalry the entire battle. All it had to do was form a defensive square. I know the AI isn't great even in the newer games but my god the Rome and Medieval 2 battle AI is plain broken.
