What a great line, “comfort is the enemy of progress.” I need to remember that one. Thanks, Shannon!

For an old guy like me that wants to get better, these drills force me to think outside the Box for improvement

I threw backup back before it had a name. a few guys on the league watched and eventually learned to use it to pickup 1-2-10s and 4-8-10s etc. I stopped using it when i got a ball fit properly to my hand and i was unable to continue to throw backup. But I may have a ball drilled specifically for the technique, if after practicing the release from the foul line does not stretch my wrist properly. In today's game it has become quite the useful tool for many bowlers, especially the ones who cannot throw a straight ball. This drill will help them tremendously even if they never get the backup motion, but develop the straight hand position.

Great tip! At one time way back I used a backup ball to shoot my 7 pin ( a lefty) and my team mates laughed about it! Based on the number of 7's I have missed maybe I should try it again! :)

I am definitely going to borrow the phrase "Comfort is the enemy of progress"!

I've tried this before and about all I could do is get it to hook slightly to the right even when starting from about where you were on the lane. It's tough in my opinion. There is a video of Bob Learn Jr. using this technique to easily pick up the 2-4-10 split in a tournament. It looked like it was a natural release for him. :)

You said optimal finish position, then I realized you meant bowling.

I throw a backup ball for anything on the right side if left. I've had a lot of compliments on my crazy backup ball. Also love the tip Tuesday videos.

That makes sense just to understand your hand position during the release. Not every habit has to feel comfortable just repeatable.

Hello shannon! Beginners here! 🙋🏻‍♀️ I use to play backup release every time i bowl. And I already feel comfortable with it without any injuries. I use to play straight before, but i cant do that anymore. Well, I would like to have a new reactive ball. Is there any specific/suitable drills/hole that I can ask for my back up ball technique? Please help!

Thank you for this video! I watch tips from your channel everyday and they have definitely helped my game. Please please please keep showing tips for backup. I backup bowl and plan to do it forever. I’m decent at 170 Avg and I just feel like since I got the repetitions of the backup down, I just need to know how to execute more. Thank you!

The road to a 200+ average is paved with foul line drills like these and practicing spares. I will have to keep telling myself that.

217 average and I never do these drills. Purposely throw your ball the wrong way into the gutter. Hope that helps? Imagine telling a basketball player in order to have better accuracy he should practice shooting the ball over the backboard. Please tell me how the hell that makes a lick of sense? Tell a Nascar driver if he wants to start winning he should pratice slamming his vehicle into the side walls? In order to keep your teeth healthy you should practice eating 10 pounds of sugar every week. I mean really? REALLY? 😆 I'm not even saying foul line drills are pointless. But this particular tip is dumpster water juice!

@@32rekt62 Oh I get it. I understand that these tips here are mostly for beginners and that but dude, my game has gone down the toliet as of late. Right now my release is horrible. I am not getting under the ball and it just looks awful. No revs, no rotations, and bad throws that have resulted in too many splits or washouts. My spare shooting is also a disaster too. So many easy single pin misses. Depressing. 😞 The 10 pin mocks me. I know these tips here are mostly for beginners, but I feel like I need to start over at the begining again because I am lost in the forest right now. And especially with my release. Here us to better days and higher scores

@@jamestaylor5215 I've noticed often times that can be due to a poor layout on your ball. Is it something where your release used to be fine with some older ball you used to throw but now that you have a new ball or two you're suddenly having issues? I had problems with my release for almost 2 years and I swore the problem was me. Turned out the pro shop guy I had been trusting with my balls wasn't laying them out properly.. especially regarding the pitches of my thumb. Ever since I got that corrected my scores/average shot right back up and I'm back to rolling the ball extremely well.

@@32rekt62 Hummm...I'll have to ask my PSO about this and see what he thinks. I did switch from a pearl to a solid and I know my form and release can use improving, but I am going to see if the layout of the is throwing me off. It felt I like I had better release in the past so maybe it really is the ball that needs some tweeking.
