great to c u bak. as per normal the info is easy to understand for the DIYers with no bull shit. take care frankie and to everyone else from australia. cheers.
Frankie, if you are looking for additional backyard jobs, just let me know. I have a Wellcraft 236 in Montross VA that needs a paint job desperately! Question, I have started keeping my boat in the water at a marina near me. I am currently pulling the boat every couple of weeks and pressure washing and scrubbing the bottom. I want to paint the bottom for next season and will most likely paint the boat as well. What should I do first? Bottom or hull sides?
Frankie these videos are the best brother. Thanks for taking the time to put them all together. Was wondering if there was a way to apply awlcraft w/out a spray gun? I want to repair some spots on my boat but not paint the whole thing. don't want to have to buy a spray gun. thanks bro.
Hey Seth. They say you can’t roll or brush awlcraft however, I have done it in the past myself. It’s extremely thin so you will have to apply as many coats as it takes. And thanks Seth👌
I came across your work on here today frankie / I’ve spent 4hrs watching you at work I must say you are very talented I’m here in the uk and I’m in the process of buying an sea fox 230 centre console do you know any thing about this make of boat it’s a 2005 / it looks like it might need a paint job and over here there’s very few companies who can help me / kind regards from the uk mark
When you noticed that your electric DA wasn’t working “right” , what was wrong? And if you had to choose an electric DA for both sanding and polishing, would you be able to comment on any drawbacks you’ve noticed about the Mikita? I’ve been wondering if I should buy one for my project boat. Just to say this again, your videos are excellent.
Question: I have my Mako 282 now coated in white 545 and have completed the 220 sanding process. I used a dry guide coat to be able to see that the orange peel was knocked out. There are two or three spots near the bottom chine line, which is where my topcoat will go, where I think I am back to gelcoat. Would you spot prime those little areas and resand with 400 prior to painting or do you think it is ok to "over reduce" some 545 and use it as a sealer over those few spots prior to applying the topcoat?
Yes. You should be good to go after that. Really 320 is as high as you need to go with sanding. Guess it depends on the color. 220 works great for whites and 320 for darker colors. Regardless I always do a finish scrub with a scotchbrite equivalent to 380-420
@@boatpaintingrestorationwit3029 Roger. I'm going to do the 320 on the hull today. Still have the inside to sand. I've done countless cars but only 3 or 4 boats and this is my first time with awlgrip products. I agree this white primer sucks compared to grays. It doesn't hide worth crap and I had to use dry guide coat to be able to see the orange peel and pin holes. It's going to be Aqua Mist on the hull and Clipper White on the interior and top cap. Just trying to get it as slick as I can and probably way over thinking it but since I have about $2,000 in materials maybe that's a good thing. Lol. Thanks!
@@raybates3119 I jus finished a paint job on a 1992 Robalo 232. I followed Frankie's instructions and products very carefully and it turned out great. I've sprayed a couple of cars before but I'm certainly not an expert. Frankies advice and "recipe" for AwlCraft 2000 works wonderful. People can't believe the boat is almost 30 years old. Good Luck!
Frank, Getting ready to shoot my 20 ' skiff with these products. May i ask what the pot time is for the primer and paint after mixing in the reducer? Are you mixing between coats while waiting for the previous coat to tack off ? Thanks in advance and thanks for all your help. Aloha
Hey Scott. I mix up what I think it will take to complete the process. Whether I am priming or painting. No need to mix a new batch for each coat. I’ll occasionally stir what I have mixed up. Just keep your mixed up product in the shade until you’re ready for it. 👌
Hey Jim. For some reason I haven’t seen your questions until just now. These two compressors struggle to run a air da. You will want a compressor with a minimum of 11 cfm’s. I get by with this setup at my house but would definitely not want to use it everyday. It’s perfect for smaller projects and will push the spray gun good enough for my liking. The compressor I use everyday has 23.5 cfm’s. They say a orbital sander only needs about 6.9 cfm’s but a disc sander needs 20. Bigger is better and I’d just recommend going with what you can afford
@@boatpaintingrestorationwit3029 I'm just sanding the inside and outside of a 19-6 Aquasport and then priming and painting. I think I'm gonna pick up a 60 gallon compressor and cross my fingers it has enough air to get me through without making me wait too long for it to catch up. I just really don't want to use an electric sander because of their weight. Also, I'll post results of how it works. *Thanks again for all your vids. I know it's work, but keep them coming.*
I appreciate your videos. But this isn't exactly the , "Backyard Paint Job" that the title implies since you're painting inside a big workshop. The workshop may be in your back yard, but it's not the same as having to paint in your actual back yard... like outside. Not everyone has a nice indoor place like that to paint so we have to deal with things like weather, dust and other flying debris, insects, etc. Not to mention you were able to extend your workday after dark. I was hoping you might provide some tips on dealing with these things while painting outside.
My friend you ever try rust oleum topside paint ????? You need to do a video whit this type paint is cheap most of us adjust to this budget thank you very much !!!!
Yes. Unless finishing off repairs. I always dry sand as you can see better and it goes quicker. I’ll finish off with a fine scotchbrite and water as a last step before topcoat
