Backyard Rabbitry: Reducing the Stink in Summer

This is how I try to keep the smell down in the summer time. I add some pine shavings, not much just a handful or two to the back corners where the rabbits pee. The pine absorbs the pee and gives it more surface area to dissipate and thus reducing the smell. I also put 1-2 Tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (ACV) into the gallon water jug I use to fill the rabbits individual water containers. This seems to help with the strong pee smell as well. Hope this helps!

I know right! I am so glad I discovered this because it really helps in the hot summer to keep the stink down. Plus it makes for a slightly easier clean up.

Great tips Jen! I also use pine shavings or horse pine bedding. It really does make a difference.

I have noticed that when I use compost (from my compost pile), that I can go a lot longer without having to empty the tray. I think the bacteria in the compost might feed on the urea in the urine. Just a thought.

You are right about ACV it does help with breeding. I am not sure why, an old wives tale that works. Another thing that works.... raspberry leaves.

If you are looking to purchase just meat, then I'd ask around at the farmers market or check craigslist. If you are looking to raise domestic rabbits check craigslist for rabbits that might interest you. It's cheeper to get into raising rabbits if you start with mutts rather than pure-breeds. And as far as the suburbs goes.... I'm in the suburbs. Rabbits don't make any noise and are relatively invisible. Just make sure it's legal with your local code department or HOA.

I'm assuming you mean capture and then breed. Yes, you could do it but you shouldn't, that's cruel. To take a wild creature and force it to domesticate is a process reserved for zoo's. I say get a good pellet air gun and practice shooting them. Then eat the wild ones with out any cage cleaning and feeding (save for your carrots) on your part. Free food with a good aim can't beat that.

the shavings hold the nitrogen in the urine.

OR don't keep your rabbits in crappy cages with wire flooring and clean them more often.
