How to turn a steel water trough into an above ground pool with a sand filter.
*Please note: Between minutes 1:00 - 3:00, our backyard chickens decided to start laying eggs and their accompanying squawks can be heard. To make light of the situation, we added a graphic chicken pop up in post-production. We realize the chicken squawking is distracting. Due to the many comments about the chickens, and visitors not being able to find pertinent info about the video, we are now moderating comments so that visitors can easily find information about stock tank pools. If you leave a comment solely about the chicken noises or graphic, we will remove it.
Here are the things that we used to make it work. Before you buy from Amazon, be sure to check with your local pool supply company. We found better prices on several of the things we needed from our local pool store.
The pump we used is this one: amzn.to/2WWDT27
The outlet and valve that we used: amzn.to/2Zv6Io4
The additional shut off valve we used is this one (only comes in a 2 pack and you only need one) amzn.to/3ebap6u
Sand for the filter: amzn.to/3ghBTJt
The hole saw we used: amzn.to/3bUQIyd

My Gramps had 48 head of Beeffalo hybrid and two huge stock tanks. That's two pools and 48 cattle as witnesses to fun you can have creating whirlpools by walking and then running as fast as you can around in circles at the edge until the water and you are going there same speed! Then plop down flat on your back and enjoy the ride.. my bull Redman used to come up to the side and run around as I floated by... Good times. Miss my Gramps.

I had one of these growing up. We learned quickly which direction to swim around the pool so we didn't take any skin off scraping against the overlaped seam. LOL

Bromine is an alternative to bromine that sanitizes as well as chlorine but is less caustic on plumbing and skin. Not nearly as stinky either. We use bromine in our hot tub and it works great. (FYI for the commenter below who asked about salt v chlorine...) BTW, great video. Thanks for sharing!

Frank Kelly I had one growing up! Daddy brought an old tank home from his uncles farm, spread a thin layer of cement on the inside, put brick around the outside, added a big old brass drain and me and all the kids from the neighborhood played in it all summer long for many years! Hope to have one in my backyard this time next year!

We are in our third year of a stock tank pool. Last fall the pool started to rust. This spring we raptor lined it in blue. the old intex fitting for the outlet cracked upon installation. We ordered new fittings but not intex. The 1.5" intex outlet is now very difficult to find and extremely expensive. I think at this point we have one of the most expensive stocktank pools on the planet. lol Its a dog pool for our 4 boxers so its completely worth it.

8 ft stock tank runs about $389-399. The pool pumps price depend on which you purchase, warning they are almost all out of stock due to covid and the ones available are 2 or 3x higher on amazon rn. If you level area where you place tank like we did with sand it was $45. There are ways to heat and make a hot tub for winter. Correct ways that are safe. We also lined inside of ours with pond shield epoxy (sky blue color) meant for water use. Turns to a plastic like coating. It was $65. Required prep. These pools last years if well kept.

we had a custom fiberglass stock tank made. the owner (lady) of the stock tank company said granddparents sometimes have one made. 4 feet deep 10 feet almost 2500 gallons. they put a smooth finish and made it dark green we wrapped it with reed fencing. its in the back yard where we can see the kids from inside. we fill it with well water. lasts over a week with no chlorine. then we put chorine floaters in. hang a hose pipe over the willow tree from a harbor freight pump (they call it dirty warter in our case it isnt) submersible to aireate it. we put a plastic sprinkler in the bottom barely revolving. about every month and a half we empty it wash it down. let it dry and start over our granddaughters love it. cost around $1600. the airerating pump was around $60 the sprinkler less than $4.

You better MAKE SURE all of the steel fittings and the tank are GROUNDED/BONDED with min 8 gauge solid copper wire. Use a bonding bar and make sure it all ends with a deep solid copper plated grounding stake. If you don't do this, this is a potential death trap if something conduction electricity hits that steel tank.

@austinediblegardens
@austinediblegardens 4 года назад
Thanks re: chickens :) Stock tanks are definitely longer -lasting., which will save you money in the long run. These things were meant to last. That is probably the best reason for choosing it over inflatable. I also try not buy plastic products in general and an inflatable pool is just going to end up in the landfill sooner rather than later, and sit there foreeeeeverrrr. As for health benefits, they are both filled with chlorinated water, but I know you can make the stock tank into a salt water pool if you want to go that route. You can probably get deeper above ground inflatable pools which would be nice. I think stock tanks look cooler than inflatable pools too.
