Backyard Wrestling and Backyard Wrestling 2 were games developed by Paradox Studios, a development studio who gained notoriety thanks to their "Thrill Kill" PS1 game that got cancelled (later changed to Wu-Tang Shaolin Style / Taste The Pain). The team would end up developing "Backyard Wrestling: Don't Try This At Home" and "Backyard Wrestling 2: There Goes The Neighborhood", 2 wrestling video games that took the action away from the ring and put it in backyards, truck stops, and empty swimming pools (among other locations). Fans had the oppurtunity to play as characters such as New Jack, Sandman, John Zandig, The Insane Clown Posse and Sabu.
This video takes a look at both Backyard Wrestling games. Original Xbox version used.

While it may not be everyone's cup of tea this game will hold a special place in my heart my friend bought this and we played many hours together before he died if only for those moments with him other than that this game was broken as hell lol

It's ironic the same team who made this went on to make WWE All-Stars, arguably one of the best arcadey wrestling games ever made. But the original, it felt like they were looking at Power Stone for inspiration, rather than a wrestling game. But, madness there's no tornado tag/battle royale mode.

There was so much more going to be added to the second game that would have made it more fun to play and would have been more polished. Like the first Backyard Wrestling game, Kevin Gill told me a lot of things about this one. -Jeff Hardy and other wrestlers were going to be in the game. Jeff was independent in 2003 and Kevin got on really well with him when he was making the game but never got in touch after he gave his permission to put him in the game. His model and his moveset were complete but was cut. He can be seen very briefly in an early trailer. CM PUNK was also going to be in the game but he was in Ring Of Honor at the time. RAVEN was also considered but he was contractually obligated to TNA at the time and Kevin really wanted him to be in the game, but it fell through. -Someone from Interscope Records approached him and said FRED DURST would like to be a part of the game. Yep, FRED DURST! He refused immediately saying it completely goes against the games tone. -Kevin actually voices four wrestlers in the game. -The custom characters you fight in Talk Show Mode were made by one of the character modellers. Kevin hated them. -Eidos was going through structural and management changes at the time and they also didn't like the game. This is why the game didn't turn out fully polished. -The commercial for the game, which features ICP, was drastically different at one point. The master of "OH MY GOD" himself, Joey Styles, was originally going to provide a voiceover for the commercial!

not having fred durst was a huge mistake, but i really doubt they said no because it didn't "fit the games tone" it fit the games tone perfectly, ICP just did not like korn, eminem and kid rock, who at the time fred durst was very closely associated with.

You gotta hand it to ICP. They had their own federation, they wrestled in all of the major promotions, WWF/ECW/WCW/TNA, they apologized to Terry Funk, Mick Foley and Sabu for using unauthorized footage of them from Japan for their own videos and even went out to the Double Cross Ranch to personally pay Terry Funk $4000 as an added apology and have held events paying both the wrestlers who attended well and legends who made the shows too, and as crappy as they were, they even made two video games. A lot of people just dismiss them for their music and image and its understandable because its not for everyone's taste, but for wrestling, they really contributed a lot to the business in their own way and its somewhat of an unsung story. I remember the games being playable only for so long before it got somewhat forgotten about after a while, and its too much of a niche product for a fad that sorta faded away into mid 2000's, although there are certainly still backyard wrestling groups out there and more and more wrestlers are starting out in them. It would be neat to see another one of its kind, but its likely not gonna happen anytime soon unless they made a more serious go at it being a wrestling game. Still, any game with New Jack, Vampiro and I think Gupta was based on Sonjay Dutt in it is worth it. Hat's off to the Insane Clown Posse. You should probably cover them as well.
