I had bacterial meningitis as an infant. I did die and had to be revived. Had almost complete hearing loss in my left ear, but thanks to tons of surgery’s for my ear I can hear. They told me I wouldn’t grow or develop as normal which for the most part was true. They also told my mom I wouldn’t amount to much, this was back in 1989. Lol. But I am here able to do everything they said I wouldn’t be able to do, including having children. 🙌🏼

I had bacterial meningitis on Feb 21st 2023 and contracted a mild stroke. I was placed in a coma for 9 days. I had an infection rate of over 400. Now i suffer from partial hearing loss on my left ear and CONSTANT ringing and my right foot feels a little stiff. I was taken to hospital on 21st Feb and discharged on 27th March. A total of 34 days in hospital. I am thankful to my wife who acted very swiftly and took me to the hospital. I have no memory of being taken to hospital by an ambulance or being restrained by hospital security (bcoz i was acting really weird 😂) or being seen by doctors. I thank god, thank the nurses and doctors for their tremendous work.

I had bacterial meningitis 3 years ago. I'm so lucky. I waited at home, in bed suffering for 10 days! The doctor said I'm so lucky i didn't die! Please don't wait like me, thinking it will get better!. The spinal tap was incredibly painful, omg

I lost my brother last February because of this desease 😭😭😭😭. The doctors were not able to diagnose him very quickly. He was in the hospital for 21 days and they fail to know the real cause of his comma. Until one Kenyan doctor came across him,He immediately knew the desease from his symptoms and told the other doctors.... This boy has Meningitis. But they delay waiting for scanning results. The next day morning he passed away😞😭.

I am so sorry for both of your losses I am a survivor which I owe to a Dr that lived a cop of houses down I had another virus that I needed spinal tap which was at another hospital and I traumatised my mother, when they told her they would have to do it again she fell apart n she said no , she was told she was told she will die then lucky the Dr that lived down the road seem this n told her, we think we know what she has but we need to do this by then what was taken looked like puss so the early treatment is critical I was left wit what is known as chiari malformation

The fact that I had meningitis as a child still stays with me till this day. The doctor said if I would of came in 20mins later I would of died. I remember them asking me if I want to feel goofy or drowsy, as in the gas they would use to put me down. Naively, I say drowsy thinking I wouldn't feel the spinal tap - boy was I wrong. It was extremely painful- took about 6 grown men to hold a kid down. What they don't tell you on here is that the needle goes to your bone marrow so they puncture your spinal bone not go between. Definitely a 20 out of 10 pain scale. But after that everything else is easy just took a few days to get better. I'm honestly extremely lucky that I came out able-bodied with no neurological, physical issues or anything because I see a lot of people did not.

Fantastic video! I had a few questions though. Would the antibiotics need to be administered first (as soon as there is clinical suspicion of meningitis) or would an LP need to be done first? And if she had viral meningitis, what would the management look like then?
@TinyMedicine
@TinyMedicine 3 года назад
The rule is cultures before antibiotics. It's almost universal. Otherwise LP cultures could be negative. One exception is when there are signs of raised intra cranial pressure. (Severe meningitis, focal neurological signs, papilloedema,etc). Then a NCCT brain is needed before a LP. At that time, we give antibiotics prior to the LP because of the delay. It's a clinical judgement. If you expect a delay in LP for any reason, then you can justify a shot of antibiotics before LP. If the CSF full report indicates a viral picture, we can send a spared sample of CSF for virology studies. Since they take time you can give Acyclovir empirically to cover HSV (that's our unit's practice). But the guidelines say Empirical antivirals are only indicated when there's acute encephalitis or in few other conditions. Thank you so much for the kind words! Appreciate it a lot. 🥰

Hey so my girlfriend has been exposed to her uncle who was diagnosed with meningitis yesterday. He somewhat had a seizure before being admitted. He had been acting confused and complaining about a headache and all. She has been complaining about having an intense headache for a while too and even went to hospital at some point, but it was the only symptom she had and they just gave her painkillers or so. They are still doing lab checks to see the specific type whether bacterial fungal viral TB or whatever on the uncle. They administered Ciprofloxacin based on contact with the uncle and to others in the household. I’m obviously worried and would like to ask, is this disease curable? Like when they provide treatment does it leave the body entirely, as videos and google hasn’t been specific on this note. Also if she has it, when is she not infectious and does she need more medication?
@TinyMedicine
@TinyMedicine 2 года назад
1. Though meningitis is critical, it can be cured with appropriate treatments. 2. Meningitis is simply infection of the "meninges". It's not directly contagious. However the causative organism (bacteria/virus/fungus/TB) could be contagious. 3. Trust your doctors. They have enough experience treating meningitis cases

My niece died last December 7 2022... the doctor said she had bacterial miningitis.. but I can't believe it.. bcoz at first she only have a high fever her head was very hot but her body is cold she don't have any rashes.. is it true that she had a bacterial miningitis? I have so many question to ask bcoz I can't believe it my niece had a bacterial miningitis..

Most of the times meningitis happens without a rash. I suggest you to talk with the doctors again or seek second opinion from a different doctor if you have doubts. I'm sorry for your loss. May she rest in peace.

Is it possible an infection can become systemic and the symptoms are not severe and tolerable? If that was a case and a person had infection for years because their immune response was strong, how could that be disgnosed?
@TinyMedicine
@TinyMedicine 2 года назад
Anything is possible in Medicine. systemic infections can affect the brain & vice versa. When that happens it's not usually "tolerable". Fungal & TB meningitis are examples of chronic meningitis. The diagnosis will be still based on Symptoms, Signs & investigations, especially the CSF report. You should be able to see changes even in chronic meningitis.

I think I have a tb meningitis. I have this all of the symptoms for over a year but I just bear it and but I was diagnosed with PTB minimal, recently. I wasn't able to get my sputum test result immediately since it is holy week. But I have this headache that never goes away. Is it possible that the tb goes into my brain and cause the pain? How urgent is this? I mean I suffered and bear the headache for over year and I heard that meningitis quickly spread and very serious?
